This Yankee series has put a damper on things as far as pitching goes. I think we did catch the Yankees at a good time for them along with bad umpiring also some strange things going on especially with that inning last night with all those opposite field hits to right field, someone mentioning some sign stealing going on which isn’t against the rules unless it’s what the Astros did.

They are notorious for doing it though. They did it against us in 2021 and shelled Hendriks.

Sox in a T-5th in position player fWAR at 10.6. Down a bit in wRC+ at 104, need our big bats to come back healthy. Defense continues to trend positive -6.8 runs below avg, good for 11th now. Pitching, well, scuffling. Still holding on at 18th in fWAR but now 23rd in FIP and 23rd in xFIP.

The good and the bad of the pitching staff is all the value is all coming from a couple of guys. We have one TOR starter, one mid rotation starter, an elite RH reliever, and two strong LH relievers providing 7.6 fWAR while the rest of the staff is a combined -1.3 fWAR. And that figure is -2.0 fWAR if you exclude Kay, Schultz, & Davis who are all positive value at the moment.

We first need to get guys healthy and onto the major league roster. Schultz will eventually fill the open rotation spot, but we need someone to bump Fedde and potentially Kay to really make progress in the rotation. Mason Adams is now in striking distance and I’m not writing off Sandlin, but Shane Smith & McDougal are the guys who could really move the needle.

As for the bullpen, external help will likely be needed, but Wikelman Gonzalez, Palette, & maybe Peoples could all be possible upgrades over the trash LH relievers we are using right now. And some of the guys who are potential SP options could factor in here as well.

There is hope if we can get guys back & healthy.

My personal hope is that out of McDougal, Smith and Wikelman we can get one 4th starter and a decent 7th inning guy. That would be a pretty good boost from what we have now. The Fedde and Kay games we're basically starting the game needing 6 runs to win and we're fucking our pen at the same time for the rest of the series.
