White Sox signing Randal Grichuk to major league deal

Well who the hell else would be available who is decent and would actually want to play for this franchise?

It's has been's, retreads, cast off's and injury prone guys (and you'll like it!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

I'm sorry, are there potential All-Stars in their prime sitting home, waiting for the phone to ring right now? The waiver wire is it. I can't imagine anybody was thinking an Aaron Judge was out there, waiting for the Sox to sign him.

Holy s%*#! Has the White Sox Buzzkill Army come out in this thread, or what?

How can this not be seen as a necessary and good move. Baldwin got hurt; Hays is hurt; Kelenic ain’t doin’ it; Acuna is an automatic out. They need someone, a BODY. Bitching about dumpster diving is pointless. Getz is doing what he has to do to help the pay .500 ball in May . . . like they did in April. . . remember April.

Another thing: can we stop with the calls to DFA Benintendi. The people on here wanting him DFAed are lemmings repeated what others say on here, just echoing off each other regardless of how silly it is.

I understand you think he’s way overpaid; I get that, but don’t you guys get that the Sox would still have to pay him even after he is released?

And it’s stupid to say/ imply that this Sox team would be better without Benintendi. After Mune and Colson, Beni and Vargas are their best bats. The team has really been playing well the last month and Benintendi is a major part of that success. Why would the Sox DFA a player (whom they’d have to pay anyway) who is helping them have their best results in four years, especially when most the bats in the outfield right now (see my 1st statement) are so weak. It makes no sense.

That’s what’s so weird and off putting about the tone of this thread: looking at the 70% of the posts on this thread you’d think the White Sox were on their way to another 100 loss season, not about to move in contention for the Division lead.

And Caulfield with his Tigers at 61.5% playoff odds . . . . by the two or three months, at least, that it takes for Skubal to return, they’re gonna be looking up at these White Sox.

Delusional. Benintendi is at -0.8 bWAR and -0.5 fWAR. 🤣

The only reason the Sox can’t DFA him is because they are too busy bringing one of their only decent outfielders back too early and getting him reinjured. Which then leads to them having to sign washed-up vets like Grichuk.

That's my point. There aren't any.

The fact the Sox only option is this refuse is an indictment in itself. They can't even develop competent outfielders on their own and have to rely on dumpster diving three years into yet another rebuild isn't good.

That's possible, assuming the Sox themselves don't get gutted by injuries since they have very little depth.

I feel like there is too much over reaction to this minor move.

I see your point but also understand the fact that we are three years into another rebuild and the Sox still don't have a quality outfielder on the roster to save their souls from the minor league ranks.

That's not a good sign.

He was already playing in AAA games. Every single team plays the waiver wire all year. Break out the smelling salts and relax.

All teams rely on "dumpster diving" every season. The fact that you feign ignorance of this simple fact to troll Sox fans on a daily basis is an indictment of you. They've developed their left-fielder. You whine about fundamentals when he makes common rookie mistakes. They amassed a group of outfielders to work with in the offseason. Pereira is injured. You will claim that Reinsdorf ran out on the field and kneecapped him, himself because he's "cheap" or something. Tristan Peters is pretty much their starting CF. But he once made a mistake and isn't batting 1.000, so he "sucks".

They just grabbed a 5th OF off the waiver wire. I'm sure if you bother to look, every single major league team has done that a couple times, now, in the first month of the season.

How do you define quality? Peters, Pereira and Antonacci have all put up positive fWAR one month into the season. Three starters are out injured, right now, which happens across the game at times.

Why don't you tell us the perfect profile of the perfect backup? Anybody the Sox acquire is either a retread, washed up, too inexperienced, wasn't born an outfielder, doesn't bat 1.000, or some other made up BS. The truth is you have no point.

Antonacci is far from developed as a LFer.

He's more of a band aid.

He's better than Vaughn or Sheets in the outfield, but that's still a pretty low bar.

Benintendi has nothing to do with Getz and should be waived. He's not worth anything any longer. Sunk cost fallacy.

And you left out Acuna, quite intentionally.

And Hays' history of 18 injuries since Covid.

And Pereira's injury history beginning with the Yankees.

Tristan Peters has been better than expected (for now) and Hill a replacement level player.

The fact remains that Braden is the only real legit prospect out there...which is largely thanks to Crochet.

No I don't count Sammy Zavala or Jacob Gonzalez here.

Antonacci has put up 0.3 fWAR over 17 games. That's 2,86 over 162. A better than average major leaguer is a bit more than "just a band aid" If you're going to concern troll, at least put some effort into it.

I named the three OF starters. Getz brought in a group of OFs. Of Baldwin, Peters, Pereira, Acuña, Hill and Hays, three of those guys are injured, and one hasn't taken advantage of the shot he's been given. By all means, please point out the teams who develop 100% of their prospects. The Sox just took two of three from your Padres. Looks like they could use a couple of band aids.

So Hays was never close to healthy enough to be useful, but the Sox rushed him up anyway.

He said he would have been down a few more days if not for the Murray injury

It's weird how players can't get injured playing rehab games in AAA, but playing in the majors is like storming a beach on D-Day. Maybe they should study the AAA game to find out why it's so safe and no players ever get injured on a rehab assignment and teach that in the majors.

Exactly. It also likely resulted in Hays getting reinjured with a second lower body injury.

Before the game, they also gave their offense what they hope is another jolt by calling up outfielder Austin Hays from Triple-A Charlotte, ending his rehab from a strained right hamstring. The move was made necessary by a shoulder injury to Tanner Murray that will sideline him for four to six months.”

Hays DH’ed one rehab game and played LF for another. Then, they called him up. It sure seems like Venable was limiting his usage of Hays right after he was activated.

Players don't play rehab games in AAA to heal. It's not like they stumble on crutches out to left field, and after a couple of fly balls, they can walk again. They are cleared to play, and do rehab games to experience game speed, again, before they're in games that matter. It's ludicrous to pretend a player was rushed when they were already cleared to play.

Maybe Liptak is even more wrong than I thought...
