I would have preferred that our talented DH be dispatched, but I guess Philly wanted an OF who could catch the ball.

Maybe they just DFA'd him even with options and still no one claimed him ? Or do you get options back if you clear waivers when you have run out of options ? LOL clearly I am not well versed in this.

They actually acquired Jones and cash from he Guardians and they're allowing Cleveland to spend $250K of their own money on international prospects. Essentially gave up nothing.

Is this an instance where all the players from the international money "year" they gave up money from are all signed basically? And this money would just not be spent?

Probably. It's a fair argument to say that they should've already have that $500K spent. It's also fair to say that they should hold onto it and sign random players. They have until December 15th this year to use it. If they do this in future classes; I'll get upset about it. This particular signing class from 1/15 was the last Marco Paddy class with some additions by Keller's crew. It looks pretty promising. They signed a full class. I don't have much issue with using the money this way instead of just not spending it but I understand being frustrated by it.

Derek Hill was very likable. He was typical of the kind of player Getz was picking up . Good defense not much of a bat, nothing to get exciting about.

However he came to represent a little bit of that magic that is happening with outstanding defense and unexpected clutch power moments. He was a pretty good weak side of the platoon Good bench player, speed & defense and a very respectable .789 OPS against LHP.

Pereira represents an even better hitting. younger and less speedy, more power but still decent defender version of Hill. But with his injuries he feels like the kind of guy the Sox had from the 1st rebuild.

I really hope he can stay healthy this time and do the things he's shown he is capable.

We always knew that building up the international part of the organization would take the longest. Too much of that was built on Jerry loathing how that system worked and there is a lot of seediness involved when you're dealing with poor people wanting to get a piece of the very large MLB pie by representing or exploiting talented very young baseball players. It's almost totally based on who you know and building relationships with the handlers for the top guys .

36gms, 1.6 bWAR, 837 OPS, 5 homers.

Another guy we gave away for free, only to turn around and pay for Doyle to replace him. Unbelievable.

If you had 1.6 bWAR for Derek Hill on your bingo card go ahead and collect. Again, having good players on the fringe of the roster is good, not bad. You and I agreed we probably had the worst outfield on paper in MLB back in spring, how did that work out for everybody?

When you're an organization that isn't a big spender, the only way to sustain success is to win shares of value in the majority of your moves.

Every time you release a Derek Hill and then trade for a Brenton Doyle with 2 prospects a month later, you've lost value and set yourself back. These moves add up fast too.

And you're correct, although had I known we were going to throw Ant in left I wouldn't have said the worst since Ant is like a life raft for the group, lifting them all up.

I still don't believe in Peters at all, but sometimes things go your way and that's awesome!

That’s just crazy and I don’t blame Getz for getting rid of him. Hill had a -0.1 bWAR with the Sox. However, I can blame Getz for paying a premium to acquire essentially the same player. That’s the rough part IMO.

It's not essentially the same player. Nobody ever mistook Hill for a starting CF. That's Doyle's ceiling, gold glove starting CF with some pop.

And it's weird. When we trade Hill for 2 minor leaguers, we "gave him away for free". So in that same vein, we got Doyle for free, as well as Bart and Brazoban.
