Why would Jerry be afraid to commit $14M next year when we have one of the lowest payrolls in baseball?

Because he’s Jerry and $14M would tie the Sox record of highest paid SP salary for a year.

Trevor Bauer is an awful clubhouse fit even if you believe him innocent of any criminal wrongdoing. I also don’t understand why anyone would think a 35 year old pitching in the Nippon League or where

Gonzo can go back down to Charlotte and stop his arb clock once Mune is back. That's fine. He just got a nice pay pump for 6 weeks or whatever and now he knows he close he is and what he has to contin

They wouldn't get the comp pick. You have to be on the same team in the majors for the full season prior to free agency.

How sad is that

I believe James explains in that string that the Pirates don't even spend their entire draft allotment. And they have two 2nd rounders.

Because there may not be a complete season next year and the loss of potential revenue could make him gun-shy. You know how he is when it comes to taking risks especially on pitchers.

I mean, this isn’t even remotely true

Sadder if it were true

But if there is no season, he doesn’t have to pay the player.

Unfortunately, there has long been a difference between "should" and what Jerry actually does.

I can easily see him milk the marketing/merchandising money for the season and then instruct Getz to trade him after the lockout for cheap controllable talent to fill needs instead of spending money.

There’s not that much Japanese corporate money yet until Mune’s long term destination is firmed up.

But he has a double value in recruiting Sato and/or Itoh.

Don't they usually pro rate the salaries to the number of games played?

Junior Perez caught my attention after taking Skubal deep. It looks like he had a combination of speed & power in the minors.

Saw this trade proposal online. Would you do it? Would the Angels do it?

  • CWS get: LHP Detmers & RHP Bachman

  • ANA get: SS Carlson, RHP Lacombe, & CA Graterol

I don't think the Angels are trading Detmers unless they get a overwhelming offer from another team. Detmers is a good pitcher who isn't being paid alot of money . I can't see the Angels trading him.

The MLBTR Podcast discussed what the White Sox should do at the trade deadline. They felt out of all the surprise teams this year that the Sox made the most sense to buy. They believe the lineup is legit and basically is complete 1 to 9 if Peters can continue hitting. SP is the major need thing and they through the same idea I had in Sonny Gray. They feel the prospect cost will be low if a team takes on money including his buyout. Really seems like the move to make.

Detmers should go to a team with more surplus prospect capital…

You've been saying all along that trading Carlson now is selling low. Since the Angels aren't good at development, would they even take a guy they need to nurse through a serious swing overhaul? I'd think a guy like Colby Shelton would be more their speed. College dude who just hits.

I would not make that trade - angels would.

I definitely would not trade low on Carlson, but the question becomes is this trading low? If this version of Detmers is legit, then getting 2 1/2 years of him for Carlson and the other two pieces is a good deal for us. That’s really comes to scouting and I haven’t seen enough of him to have strong convictions either way. I do think that Carlson is worth substantially more than Shelton though and if a bad Angels team is blowing things up then they’ll prefer the higher ceiling talent no doubt.

What’s your view on Detmers? He was a pretty hyped prospect, but never has been this good before in his career. Is his performance not sustainable?

It’s the other way around.

You do realize Shelton is hitting .167 with a .570 OPS in Birmingham? He has almost three thirty game samples in his minor league career . Last year was worse than AA. He raked at High A but that is one of the three samples.

Angels would love to get a high end upside prospect like Carlson out of this deal and they know him very well from being a local guy. Detmers is solid but he is not an ace or a true front end guy.
