With the acquisition of Doyle, could an outfielder be on the move? Possibly for a catcher?

We have no excuse not to buy a top-end SP in free agency this offseason. As such, I’d rather keep Bonemer and go with a cheaper SP at the deadline. I truly believe we should not be doing “all-in” trad

Trevor Bauer is an awful clubhouse fit even if you believe him innocent of any criminal wrongdoing. I also don’t understand why anyone would think a 35 year old pitching in the Nippon League or where

This is my take - I also presume their front office didn't see Adams as being a ML guy as a starter and probably knew they had to move him now given the upcoming roster crunch issues.

I think that Fuller and Co have earned leeway with us whereas they can help a guy like this get back on track.

Could be a sneaky good move where a lot of folks who aren’t looking at it this way are shocked if he becomes a fixture in centerfield.

I think at the bare minimum a right-handed hitting catcher. If they come away with at the deadline that- we are in good shape.

It’s possible two OFs are moved now.

Since Doyle has options, I don’t think it’s a sure thing he starts with the big league club.

Anything is possible aside from there NOT being more moves.

I still think we get a starting pitcher with frontline potential and a catcher.

Hayes is a goner, but I think it’s a reach to assume Doyle is on the big club immediately.

That’s totally fair normally, but a super risky way to approach the deadline.

Do you honestly think these moves are super risky for the Sox?

Doyle no, Castillo yes

Why is Castillo risky? It’s a one year deal if he pitches shitty, this season and whatever they get next season. He isn’t hitting 180 innings next year, he isn’t getting that option in 28. What makes it risky?

Say he stinks the rest of the year…then you’re still on the hook for him next year and you’re more limited on payroll flexibility. Usually the benefit of trading for a controllable player, like Detmers, is they’re cheap.

Luis Castillo isn’t gonna sink the payroll flexibility if he pitches shitty. This is “if you are scared then get a dog” s%*#. He is coming to be a 3rd starter at best(which could change if they get another pitcher)

For Doyle I think yes. Are we giving a dude who hasn’t hit a lick in two years all the CF at-bats against RHP moving forward? This guy has been Romo levels of bad with the bat. Fixing him won’t be easy in a part time role and during a playoff push and could further exaggerate our problems against LHP.

Castillo is less of a risk to current year results and just more of a gamble. My point is when fighting for a playoff spot you typically prioritize guys you are confident can help you win and not reclamation projects. I’m more optimistic they can “fix” Castillo to some extent, just don’t think the value equation made a lot of sense and would have preferred someone with a better floor or ceiling.

Thank you. People really don’t get it.

And… I still STRONGLY believe we are getting a catcher and another SP.

Doyle isn't making money and has minor league options. We don't even know if he's going to be in Chicago. If the risk is that the Sox can't resist giving bad players at bats, then there's nothing that can be done to save them.

Giving him at bats to rest peters is not super risky. You may not like it because the player hasn’t been good this season but it’s not super risky.

I feel like people are conflating risk with personal approval, and it’s not the same thing. Doyle isn’t coming in to supplant the center fielder, he is coming in because they are concerned that the backups are not good enough

If we raise our payroll by 50% next offseason, Castillo will represent about 1/6 of it in total. Let’s not pretend it’s not a meaningful amount of money.

Yep and it’s taking quite the risk assuming someone will pitch better leaving a pitcher’s park (with great pitching development) for a hitter’s park.

This is still a Jerry owned team afterall. It absolutely matters

As I posted elsewhere, I’d feel better if he was sent to AAA. Until I know the plan, I assume most players that contenders add at the deadline and who cost meaningful prospects are intended for the major league roster.

See these aren’t all the same argument. You are arguing two separate things, player abilities and the teams finances. These are not the same discussion and what I am currently discussing is how these players fit in and play with this team until the end of this contending season. You are worried about what happens in a strike season and honestly you should throw that out the fuckin window

Think it’s due to Yankees trying to get Adley. If/when they figure out they can’t get him, I expect they will be up against the WSox for Stephenson.

Liam Hicks? Too expensive for Yankees ? Unlikely to be moved ? Marlins pretty quiet so far.

They want a righty due to their lineup construction

We literally had Derek Hill for this role and traded him becuase we felt covered in CF against LHP with Pereira & Acuna. It’s fine if they no longer feel that way, but I would have pursued a different option than this. I have zero confidence in this guy batting against lefties in a playoff game. Also, it’s not like this guy came free…we gave up two legitimate prospects. I know it’s fun to downplay Adams around here, but he could have used for some other upgrade.

Again, I’m hoping they plan to send him to Charlotte and let him work through s%*# before considering him an option for the major league squad. If this is a hedge for Pereira as the platoon CF and not a replacement I’d feel much better.

TBH, I'm not sure that Liam Hicks makes all that much sense for the Sox. Sketchy defense, zero power, offensive numbers smell a bit like good luck, lefty bat. Probably going to cost too much because of team control.
