Gonzo & Eisert Traded to Pirates for Comp Pick and Jaden Woods

I will say I’m intrigued by how much money they now have to spend in this draft. They will basically be able to restock the system in one day and I trust Shirley’s decisions. Tomorrow will be fun.

They'll likely get 2-3 very intriguing players after 1-1, but that won't exactly restock a system that has fallen well back into the 20s.

Or they can try to go over with 5-7 guys and spread out the pool more thinly.

  • That's typically how draft picks work. You hope they're good in the future. Is Roch Chowalsky good? Maybe one day. Would you trade, I dunno, a 1 WAR player for Roch? He's an unknown commodity, you kno

I just don’t agree with this take. You think market value of a comp pick is a major league ready LH hitting infielder with plus plate discipline & power who brings a solid glove at multiple spots

This is such a win win for me personally. I get to keep seeing Gonzo in PNC and the Sox hopefully turn 34 into a stud HS pitcher.

I get the angst here from some from a value of picks standpoint....but most of you all s%*# on Jacob so hard the last couple years you all sound silly. Gonzo is a guy and if they are willing to trade him....they are investing in Mune and Vargas long term...and that is better than any form of Gonzalez.

It's actually more diabolical my friend....Pooh Bear was Getzy's favorite as a child...it will be traumatic on an epic scale.

Ok… Pooh dipped in liquid poop placed inside of a paper bag that you light on fire.

Compromise.

Definitely think this takes Lackey out of the mix for 1:1

You think it's Roch?

He broke out of that slump. What I am saying is that against major league pitching he did not look like a guy that could only hit at Charlotte. Plus he played good defense at not his natural position.

Maybe some people don’t realize he’s not a 1B? The Pirates are going to play him on the left side of the infield which is where he spent most of his career. He can also play 2B and looked pretty good at 1B despite being new to the position. He doesn’t need to be Murakami for the bat to play up at other infield spots.

Chase Meidroth is on pace for like a 2.8 win season by just being a league average hitter and providing quality 2B defense. Jacob may not be that level of defender at 2B, but he has almost hit as well as Chase despite adjusting to the majors and enduring a massive slump. If he can just be a slightly better hitter than Chase, he’s a very valuable player.

Jacob Gonzalez had zero future on this team. There is nowhere he could play, unless someone got injured. So it was absolutely the right move to trade him to clear a 40 man spot.

The only question is whether we could have gotten more for him from a different team. I’m not so sure we could have, but nobody really knows for sure.

But why did we have to trade him now? Most teams are 100% focused on the draft and not looking to buy for or sell from their major league roster. Obviously the answer is they wanted the Comp A pick and this was the price to get it. That being said, we could have traded Jacob at the deadline or in the offseason and still dealt with the roster crunch then. And conceptually, there would have likely been a bigger market at those times.

The white Sox are not making draft decisions based on their current rosters handedness - I hope at least.

I think when you're a bit short on RHH and the top guys are RH and quicker to the bigs it makes a difference. You don't have to take Emerson #1 if you have HS guys in mind with your other earlier picks.

You can go a long way in the Central division pounding teams into submission with a lineup that includes Bonemer and Roch replacing Meidroth and Acuna. You'll just have to find a way to keep getting pitching.

As I said before big trades for pitching are more talking points than based on real possibilities.

We just traded our number two prospect per Kiley to do so though and lost a trade chip that could have been used to augment the major league team at the deadline in the process. We have simply shifted a more advanced asset for a less advanced one and have lost some trade flexibility in the near term.

Tomorrow will be a fuckton of fun though.

Maybe they just put a lot of value on the comp pick and re-stocking the farm more than we think. Maybe JR isn't keen on paying too much extra money right now especially if you're going to make a big effort to resign Murakami in the off season.

Will the new guy just take Eiserts place or is McDougal ready?

I don’t think this new guy cracks the 40 man roster this year…that’s what makes him somewhat attractive. Paul Janish has confirmed McDougal is coming, but not my guess is that will be post the All Star break. I could see Schweitzer get the call in the short term.

Quick takes from this trade:

  1. Probably Roch tomorrow.

  2. Makes the draft even more fun tomorrow.

  3. I feel like we got 85 cents on the dollar. I understand why you would think to move Gonzalez, but feel like we are just a bit short considering the season he had.

  4. I wonder if this constrains us from being able to trade him for an MLB piece for the backend of our pen. It makes me think that Getz won't be a buyer at the deadline because Gonzalez was a piece you could move.

  5. Oh no, Brandon Eisert! ( just kidding)

  6. I do like the White Sox prioritizing the draft. Now, please do so with the international market.

We should start seeing the rewards of our new LatAM program next year. It’s hard to believe we have lasted this long with only a partial functioning program.

I’d rather have “The Chairman of the Board” (🤮) at 2B than in LF and in place of Meidroth. Find a massive power bat for LF.

Massive power bats typically lack the OBP that Antonacci has. Most power hitters (excluding premier players like Buxton) would probably not be better than Sam in LF.

Having both Chase and Antonacci on the field and in the line-up has been a revelation this season - absolute gamers, clutch hitters and table setters. They are part of a great line-up that personally, I would not mess with. If you want more RH thump in the line-up, OK, I do as well, but maybe another Grichiuk type as a platoon DH/ pinch hitter.

"The Pirates were able to flip the 34th pick because it's in a Competitive Balance Round. This one has a slot value of $2,897,400, the addition of which gives the White Sox the biggest pool in the draft at $20,489,500, or $21,513,975 when including the 5 percent overage the White Sox usually indulge. This gives them a pick in between their selections at No. 1 and No. 41, which happens to be Landon Thome's projected range."

"We believe in this team, and we discussed multiple ways to use the compensation pick to strengthen it,” Pirates general manager Ben Cherington said in a press release. “Jacob Gonzalez can complement Nick Gonzales and Jared Triolo on the left side of the infield in Konnor Griffin’s absence. He’s also a versatile, left-handed hitter who has taken significant steps this season, and who we believe in long-term.”

Chicago took Gonzalez with the 15th overall pick in the 2023 draft. He had generally underperformed in the minors until breaking out this season. The 24-year-old posted a massive 166 wRC+ in 52 games at Triple-A. Gonzalez slugged 19 home runs and stole eight bases before his call-up. He came into the year with 17 home runs across three pro seasons.

Murakami’s hamstring injury gave Gonzalez a chance to get regular reps at first base with the White Sox. He slashed .244/.323/.360 over 97 plate appearances. Gonzalez recorded 2 Defensive Runs Saved in 29 games at first base. He played one inning at third base and didn’t see any playing time up the middle.

Eisert sits below 90 mph with the four-seamer, but he has a four-pitch mix and gets plenty of extension (95th percentile). His slider and changeup both have whiff rates above 32% this season. Eisert is unlikely to usurp high-leverage southpaws Gregory Soto and Mason Montgomery, but he gives manager Don Kelly another option from the left side."

"On the morning of the 2024 MLB Draft, those close to Konnor Griffin believed he would be selected by the Chicago White Sox.

Many teams were interested in the shortstop, rated the top high school prospect in a stacked draft class. Chicago was seen as the first in line.

“I thought the White Sox were going to take him at No. 5,” said Griffin’s agent, Joey Devine of Excel Sports Management. “I know [amateur scouting director] Mike Shirley and that front office really liked him and they scouted him really heavy.”

Lurking four picks behind them were the Pirates."

Let me guess….the Sox front office “Higher ups” stepped in and f’ed it up. Just like theyll do tomorrow

“I honestly had no idea,” Griffin told the Post-Gazette. “I knew there were a few teams that, according to my agent, were going to go college-heavy. At the time, I knew the White Sox were interested and they were the closest to the top of the board. We had our eyes on them first.”

The Pirates' Konnor Griffin watches during the sixth inning of a baseball game against the Mariners, Thursday, June 25, 2026, at PNC Park, in Pittsburgh.

Colin Beazley

Injured again, Pirates rookie Konnor Griffin is just ‘trying to stay as positive as I can’

Then he added: “The Pirates doing a Zoom call the night before had us thinking it might be them.”

Griffin’s draft profile offered a bit more risk than an established college talent. And the 2024 class was loaded with that. Three of the headliners — Travis Bazzana, Chase Burns and Nick Kurtz — are already MLB All-Stars. Former WPIAL standout JJ Wetherholt is in the running for Rookie of the Year.

For a while, it seemed as though the Cleveland Guardians were considering taking Griffin first overall, sending a herd of their front office to Mississippi to conduct a private workout.

The Guardians passed on Griffin at No. 1. None of the next three teams took him, either. Once the White Sox pivoted to a college arm, lefty Hagen Smith out of Arkansas, the Pirates realized they might be in business.

The Kansas City Royals and St. Louis Cardinals had kicked the tires on Griffin — St. Louis actually expressed interest in drafting him as a pitcher — but both teams went in another direction. The Los Angeles Angels, picking eighth, took a different middle infielder, Christian Moore.

Jaden Fauske is a great WSox prospect who played with Landon Thome at Nazareth. Both are Chicago area kids (I think Willowbrook and Burr Ridge). Yea, I understand you don't make draft decisions based on friendships, but then again, that could make these prospects more comfortable as they proceed through the system - plus having Big Jim as their mentor. You add some of the young talent in the minors like George Wolkow (another one of my Chicago area favorites) and the No. 1 pick tomorrow, and the Sox could be very good for the next 10 years.

Getz has delivered a first place team with promise for the future. He was an internal organization hire that was panned by a lot of posters here.

It’s discouraging.

The first time (recently) someone overruled was Jacob Gonzalez.

It will be interesting if any stories do leak about Grady Emerson asking for more $$$ with the slightest bit of NCAA/NIL leverage on his side.

TB simply loves young left handed hitters, so that seems to be his predestined fate…if one actually believes in such things.

Thome should go 41 or 78 I think is the next pick….with lots of extra pool money on top to spread around if they do take the two targeted players they “really really want” at 34/41 (local high school/prep pitcher).

In theory, like getting 1-1 and two low first rounders/high second guys (preps likely) in terms of talent and then Thome again at 78 instead of one of the two higher picks that were closer to his pre draft slotting (#40-50).

Then fifth pick Contreras?

Peters/Mune/Vargas/Crochet deal

But there’s a lot more beyond Venable and actual talent added to be equally considered in an objective analysis.
