These weren't moves simply for this season. They were for next season too. They think they can tweak something with Castillo's change to get him pitching at high levels again. Doyle is a specimen and they think they can unlock his tools.

It's easy to look so good they're doing and be angry. But Getz has a plan. He thinks he can unlock their potential. Getz has earned the benefit of the doubt. We need to let him cook.

I'm not saying they should have traded Bonemer, but they should have tried a lot harder to acquire better rentals. Instead they went for team control of guys who aren't good.

Dude Panican’ed due to Peters’ temporary slump and gave up too much for a potential non-tender CF in the offseason. Castillo is James Shields v2.0 and Mason Adams would look like an ace compared to him right about now.

What GM pays a big price for a player that hasn’t been good for 2 full seasons and then employs him as a backup CF that only starts against lefties in a playoff run?

Getz is basically showing us that he fucked up by the way Doyle is being used. He should have just brought back Billy Hamilton. He could also play Gold Glove defense and OPS around .630 and would only cost $780K. 🤣

His start against Cincinnati isn't one that came out of nowhere. Let's see what can be done. He did look a bit better in the last two innings and I actually think he would have been ok going 5. We'll see. I think the key to Reds start was he relied almost solely on the fastball and change up while mixing in the sinker when needed. Also changed arm angles really effectively.

The Reds are one of the worst offenses in baseball. There’s your answer. Castillo has been turrible in all of his other four starts. That’s 1 good start out of 5 for a supposed “ace”.

Castillo is headed for retirement, only Getz didn’t realize it. But we get to pay him $23.75 million for next season and he cost us Boston Smith. Sweet deal.

This will end up being worse than the Cease trade which is impressive. The Doyle trade could also end up being #2 on Getz’s list of shame. The Cease trade may end up being better than both of these if Thorpe can at least be a #4/#5 starter.

I don’t quite understand why teams dick around trading for guys like Castillo instead of just bringing up arms from the farm. Times like this truly make me wonder if teams do get intimidated by press and fans that are bleeding and pleading for deadline deals.

Define a “lot harder” though. If you mean trading low on talent, that’s never been a good productive idea despite how often it’s done. Especially in the long run. The Sox weren’t in great position to deal. And they may have lost a trade (so far) sacrificing a body to the fans and media.

Exactly. Even if this is an off year for Castillo, he’s OLD and players decline. While this could simply be a down season, how could you assume that considering he is turning 34 at the end of this year? Why would you give up a solid prospect return and take on money for a starter that isn’t pitching better than a #5 starter in a playoff run? He gave up 6 years of cheap control over Mason Adams for a 5+ ERA starter. Mason Adams could end up being a bust but I’d put my money on him out-WAR’ing Castillo over the next 6 years, rather than Castillo until the end of next season. Just a flat-out awful trade, and it’s still questionable if it’s worse than the Doyle trade.

Luckily, I’m wrong about all of this because Getz has never made a bad trade. 🤣

They are still waiver-wire talents. Trading for them is highly questionable.

Exactly.

You don’t pay a premium for additional year(s) of control for bad players in a playoff run. Grab cheaper rentals that are currently performing well and then sign better players for future seasons when there is a much larger pool of players to choose from in free agency.

But the Sox are still cheap under Jerry, so this is what happens…
