It may or may not work tonight, but it cracks me up how WS Twitter freaks out whenever an opener is announced. It seems to have been a huge success so far.

That’s kind of why I was asking LF, why is Murphy some sort of Persona Non Grata? He has a good open and a not so good open from what I can see, both against Cleveland. You can tell that the staff has decided that they are just trying to shorten the game around the actual starter

Same people would be up in arms if Martin was only able to go 4 and Murphy had to go in to a medium leverage spot in a close game in the 5th. Will doesn't exactly have the 90s Braves staff to work with, He's trying to make chicken salad out of mostly chicken s%*#.

I think we have a better record using an opener vs. not using an opener, but not sure how to look it up without going through every game log.

I don't mind the concept of the opener, it has worked. I don't like Murphy in that role. I hope he proves me wrong.

Murphy as an opener is a shrug for me. Cleveland is very left-handed. Part of Davis's improvement this season is that he's gotten better at getting lefties out, but it's still a weakness for him — and we still aren't totally sure which version of Davis we're getting. Murphy has pitched fairly well this year and has great stuff. And, importantly, I don't care about not having him available later in the game. That's a big difference from when the Sox used Taylor, Newcomb, and to a lesser extent Hudson as an opener. Murphy may or may not pitch well as an opener today, but I think it's reasonable to see him as likelier to throw the inning(s) more effectively than Davis and that Davis wasn't likely to go deep regardless.

So you've got:

1. An unusually left-handed opponent

2. A righty starter who you're unsure how much to trust

3. A surplus lefty reliever

Go ahead and use the opener then. I'll make a note that Murphy doesn't have much in the way of platoon splits this year or in the past which frankly doesn't make a ton of sense to me given his slider-heavy approach. But yeah, let's see how it goes.

We DFA'd Urquidy, nice. Getz seems fairly good at just moving on from failed end of rester guys, certainly compared to Hahn.
