June 5, 200817 yr Hope Jaff Decker opts to go to school (ASU). ASU is losing a ton this year...besides Wallace, Davis, Paramore, Roling...they always lose half there recruits who this year included Hosmer, Skipworth, Brett Lawrie (and Decker). Edited June 5, 200817 yr by Wanne
June 5, 200817 yr QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 03:22 PM) It's today, correct? Oh yes, we're a long way from done.
June 5, 200817 yr QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 04:08 PM) Beckham conference call up on ChiSox.com Mr. Guillen... hahahaha... Kinda funny to hear him referred to like that, but it just goes to show how polite Beckham is. Seriously, that was great. I can't reiterate how impressed I am by Beckham when he speaks. I was sorta leaning towards Smoak before the selection, but now I'm absolutely thrilled with the pick. I have a good feeling about this one. Also, love the fact that he was a D1 football recruit with offers from Air Force and Ohio, and an All-State QB and FS. Sounds like he didn't focus on baseball much in high school, so that's why he wasn't drafted then. Edited June 5, 200817 yr by dasox24

Is paramore coming out? He could be a good lower round pick, he is a gutsy player and a good leader.
June 5, 200817 yr I seen somewhere b4 this draft they said he was comparable to ARod... we could only hope!
June 5, 200817 yr ARod obviously seems to stay back a bit better as well. One has to wonder how much more Beck's frame will fill out.
June 5, 200817 yr Not saying BA is the gospel, but this is based on there discussions with some scouts (who regardless of what any of us think of a pick, know a thing or two more than any of us). It sounds as if no one is questioning whether Beckham is good enough of an athlete to stick at short, its just a matter of his hands (not range, not arm). Hope this shuts some of you up that don't even think he can play 2B, cause thats just blasphemy. While no one questions his ability to hit, scouts are split on whether Beckham has the hands to stay at shortstop. He has the instincts and is athletic with enough range and arm strength to stick at the premium position. This guy has above average bat speed and generates power to all fields. Smoak is a better pure hitter, but that doesn't necessarily indicate he's the better prospect. If both reach there upside, I'll take Beckham (cause that means your getting a SS who hits for average, power, and plays solid defense (not gold glove defense). To me that is more important than a first baseman who mashes (look around the majors and you'll see a lot more first baseman that mash than shortstops that put up those type of numbers). I would have had no problem with Beckham or Crow for that matter but the only guy I'd truly have had a hissy fit with is if we passed on Posey (and to a lesser extent Skipworth).
June 5, 200817 yr QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 04:47 PM) Nice. Becks hands stay a bit lower, but really close. Yeah, that's one thing that will have to be addressed with his swing. He drops his hands and brings them back up, but his swing is very similar to ARods. If he gives us anything close to that, we'll have succeeded.
June 5, 200817 yr QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 03:51 PM) Who are we hoping for in RD 3? Danksy.
June 5, 200817 yr QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 02:51 PM) Who are we hoping for in RD 3? I want another SS in Crawford (the guy has all the tools you can ask for). Jordan Danks is another guy that would be a great fit, but I have no idea who the hell is left on the board now.
June 5, 200817 yr Truth be told, its a lot easier to find a 1B than a middle infielder. Carlos Pena's are a lot more readily available thru FA and what not.
June 5, 200817 yr I would guess since we have Danks older bro it would make it a little easier to get him to come to the Sox this time.

Another guy I love is the OF out of Miami (no idea if he's been picked yet). Danks is a very good all around athlete whose stock has slipped a bit and I don't completely understand why. The Sox are on very good terms with the Danks family and If he's on the board I would be stunned if we picked anyone else.
June 5, 200817 yr So is this thing going to continue or are they just going to interview prospects and break down the first round for the next 3 hours?
June 5, 200817 yr What the heck is going on with Mellville. At this point I wonder if he doesn't slide a few more rounds (as teams will likely have to go well over slot to ink him (since I'm sure he'll still be asking for 1st round money). Bottom line, if he doesn't go early in the 2nd, you may see him free fall. I wonder if there was a late rumor that he was going to go the college route (or if he had ridiculous demands).
June 5, 200817 yr Ok, they're going to do rounds 2-5 tonight and the final 45 rounds tomorrow. It looks like it's close to starting back up again.

Its so ironic, everyone hates our base clogging sluggers in the majors, but they want us to draft one. Beckham was a great talent pick, and also a great need pick.
