Paulie's Down

X rays are typically only able to see the hard parts within a body (aka bones). they can't for the most part make out the softer tissues, although there are newer, higher radiation x rays coming on line that can do so. The MRI is much better at imaging softer parts.

This is true. However an MRI will only reveal the amount of fluid/inflammation in the area of an acute injury. the basis for the diagnosis of an acute injury will be based on the amount of fluid in the area. A more accurate test is really the hands on ligament test. The test will reveal the amount of "give" the ligament has. This will tell you the extent of the injury. The more give the more serious the injury. This is of course my bias from seeing the injuries on the field. The MR scan a better for te internal ligaments such as the ACL or PCL.

The injuries are classified as Grade 1, 2 or 3 by most people. Some use a 4 scale. There are basically 1) strtch with no tear, 2)moderate tear, 3) full tear.

This injury is like an ankle sprain. as long as there are no stability issues (full tear) he can either tape it up or brace it and play. Paulie is tough and I have no doubt he will try to play with it. However, we have seen how injuries can really effect him and I'm not sure how effective he can be while not being able to bear full weight on it. I don't think this is one they will want to inject with lidocaince as he will need to plant and turn on the leg.

Hopefully it's not like the definition Halas Hall uses, for a "knee sprain." Remember a few years ago when that was basically the Bears saying "Mike Brown tore his ACL and is out for the season?"

fixed that for you

Day to day pain or not, Konerko was a hot hitter for the Sox since early August. I remember what day to day pain did to his swing in the beginning of the season. Granted, that was in his hand, but I'd imagine if he does come back soon this would impact his performance to a degree.

thank god at least for that griffey trade...this is where our lack of organizational depth just destroys us

Show me a team with a 6th or 7th outfielder who has played better than Wise.

With or without PK and CQ we are not fundamentally sound at all. Swish, Griff, really need to step it up.

To name a few.

I think it depends on how you feel the "Day after". If he's mobile today, my guess is it was just a sprain.

I havent seen anything yet that says how he's feeling today (but I havent had time to look either)

I like how Oz has handled this injury bug.He is saying lets move on before anyone can even dwell on the situation, deal with this and get through the injury cause we have no choice so there is no sense in the healthy players to even think about what injuries we have because they are expected to win anyways.

Good news to read in the morning...mild strain means he should be back in a week or so, he will probably have to wear a brace but it sounds a lot better then losing him from the season.

I bet Paulie cleans his cleats like someone with OCD after last night

Here's the problem. A mild sprain could easily take 3 weeks to heal, especially on a body that's 30+ years old and has a decent amount of mass on it. Even a mild sprain and that's probably the season for him.

I would actually think he'd have a shot at being back within a week's time given that it is a mild sprain. If it was a larger sprain than you would be talking about more of a 2-4 weeks recovery time, imo.

I will take your word for it considering you are the foremost expert with your history.

I wonder if wearing a brace will make him even slower. I also wonder if that's even possible, or would violate the laws of physics.

With the brace on he will actually need to moonwalk to first. :lolhitting :lolhitting

well this is good news.

now, if we could just stop conceding games every time our fifth starter takes the mound...

It's bizarre enough that a guy most of us wanted on the bench has been saving our asses since August 1st. It'd be even more incredible if he can miraculously come back from what looked to a horrible injury and carry us to the playoffs. It would just add to the already immense legend of Paul Konerko.

It would be a big boost, as funny as it sounds, if he was able to return in a few days.

I din't turn on the radio, look at the paper, check espn.com, or anything until right now for fear of what I would see. This sounds like good news.

Is there any doubt that if Paulie returns as quickly as they suggest he will have lost his swing and will go back to pop outs, fly outs and strikeouts? I'm not a Paulie hater, but really doesn't that seem about right?

With him alot of it is mental, which I hope means he will still think he can get when he gets back. Alot of this season he was trying to narrow his hitting focus, jam himself, and go to right field. He needs to relax and put the barrel on the ball.

ESPN 1000 said the MRI confirmed its strained ligament....that is surprising as hell. With how that looked last night I though PK was finished for the season. Good thing for him.
