Just the other day (it may have been the day he died) I watched a pretty cool documentary on TV Horror Hosts called American Scary. There was was some good Svengoolie footage. My quick thoughts: Every modern-day thriller writer owes a slice of their career to Tom Clancy. In my case, I write well-researched thrillers filled with government secrets. I wouldn't be here without Clancy. He paved that path for so many of us. Thrillers, like all art, are always a reflection of the culture. No one captured that Cold War fear -- and that uniquely American perspective -- like Clancy. Jack Ryan wasn't just a character. He was us. He was every American in those days when we were a push-of-the-button away from nuclear war. But unlike us, he was ready to do something about it.
