July 8, 200916 yr Eh...have we(meaning fans) over valued Allen cause this trade would say that we have...
July 8, 200916 yr While I am sad to see Brandon Allen traded... I love Tony Pena's arm. He is a guy who hasn't been consistent, but has absolute electric stuff.
July 8, 200916 yr Not a bad reliever. Allen was one of many 1B candidates, probably would have liked him as part of a package for a premere guy, but I think Pena will be good once he gets comfortable here.
July 8, 200916 yr QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Jul 7, 2009 -> 08:10 PM) We owe them for TCQ and setting Chris Young up financially for life? lol, the Chris Young contract is totally their own doing. He wasn't batting .196 when we traded him. But yeah this would be about the only logical explanation I can think of right now.
July 8, 200916 yr The only upside to this is maybe we're going all in w/ another move We need a bat, dammit
July 8, 200916 yr QUOTE (JDsDirtySox @ Jul 7, 2009 -> 07:10 PM) While I am sad to see Brandon Allen traded... I love Tony Pena's arm. He is a guy who hasn't been consistent, but has absolute electric stuff. And the Sox seem to scout the Dbacks pretty well. This seems like a move for 2010.
July 8, 200916 yr He has some powerful stuff and will be relatively new to the American League. As Heyman says, the Sox are going for it!!
July 8, 200916 yr QUOTE (mmmmmbeeer @ Jul 7, 2009 -> 08:09 PM) Gotta be a move to set up a move. It has to be. It doesn't make any sense otherwise.
July 8, 200916 yr The only way this makes sense to me is as a long-term move with Dotel gone at the end of the year (if not sooner) and Linebrink's shoulder being completely unreliable. And even then, I'm not seeing the value in Pena.
July 8, 200916 yr Like I said.. Brandon Allen they mighta been very down on, even as a prospect. And I personally think he's very overrated here. But to trade him for a reliever (and looking at his stats a very mediore one) is not a good buisness move. Again.. I've NEVER questioned Kenny in deals.. EVER and I'm even counting when J. Reed (my favorite spect at the time) was traded for Freddy cause he was proven, and a very good pitcher.
July 8, 200916 yr QUOTE (SHIPPS @ Jul 7, 2009 -> 07:10 PM) Eh...have we(meaning fans) over valued Allen cause this trade would say that we have... What a shocker that would be... us overvaluing our spects... say it isn't so.
July 8, 200916 yr QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Jul 7, 2009 -> 05:12 PM) Pena contract status? Still currently pre-arb. Tony Pena rhp 1 year/$0.43M (2009) * 1 year/$0.43M (2009) o re-signed by Arizona 2/28/09 * 1 year/$0.4055M (2008) o renewed by Arizona 3/9/08 * 1year/$0.381M (2007) * 1 year (2006), re-signed 3/06 * 1 year (2005) * signed 2002 as amateur free agent from the Dominican Republic * previously known as Adriano Rosario * $0.4M signing bonus * ML service: 2.076
July 8, 200916 yr Hopefully this might turn into a Thornton type deal, though this is a different situation.
July 8, 200916 yr I have the same sick feeling I did when MacDougal was added for Daniel Cortes and Lumsden. Yuck.
July 8, 200916 yr QUOTE (WCSox @ Jul 7, 2009 -> 05:13 PM) The only way this makes sense to me is as a long-term move with Dotel gone at the end of the year (if not sooner) and Linebrink's shoulder being completely unreliable. And even then, I'm not seeing the value in Pena. He has a career 114 ERA+ which is pretty good, and had a ridiculous 144 ERA+ in 2007. Strikes out a fair number, doesn't walk a ton. Decent stuff it seems.
July 8, 200916 yr Allen can suck for all I care, but he mighta been a good trade chip for a bigger deal. You never know.
July 8, 200916 yr Well, the one thing ive gotta tell myself.... when it comes to LF/1B, if the prospect isnt slated to be a world beater, then he'll probably be a player that could be way more replaceable for a team winning to spend...than perhaps a good reliever.
