Technology catch-all thread

What's this I read yesterday, about the FCC opening up the white noise spectrum that got freed up from the conversion to digital signals? They are making it sound like there is going to be another tech boom or something but I don't see how it's going to change existing WiFi technology. Maybe it will help carriers roll out some new long-range wireless internet but the household stuff? I don't see it.

finally breaking into the 21st century today and getting a smartphone.

Droid X or Droid 2? I did a little research and the only thing I could really come up with was, Droid 2 has a smaller screen and a physical keyboard

thoughts?

Well I'm leaving Verizon, but if I had to choose between the phones myself, I would go with the Droid X. Bigger screen being the main reason. You can't go wrong with either one. Depends on if you need a physical keyboard or if you're okay with typing on the screen. Make sure you definitely get a screen protector though.

  • 2 weeks later...

Had a good day at the sportsbook yesterday, so I decided to take the plunge and update my desktop from a late 2006 iMac to the newest 27-inch 2.8 GHz Intel Core i5 iMac.

Holy crap, I could land all the planes coming into Midway airport on this baby!

And the new mouse and trackpad are incredible.

I'm in heaven...

I'd always had great luck with computers, in terms of not ever having any major hardware failures. Then yesterday, I dropped my laptop, and the screen is now toast.

I can hook it up to the TV and see the computer itself is fine otherwise, which is a relief. But it doesn't project well on the TV, and I'd be taking up the one TV in the house.

So now, I have a debate. I see that they sell replacement screens online - and I found a manual on how to do it. Looks like major surgery. New screen is $80, but a lot of time, and who knows if I'll screw it up. Or, I can buy an external LCD monitor for like $200, and turn my laptop into a desktop. Easy, but I lose portability. Or, since its a 3 year old laptop with s***ty Vista on it, maybe now is the time to just get a new laptop.

Anyone every changed out a laptop screen before?

With the cost of laptops these days, that just sounds like way too much of a hassle to even bother with....There are some pretty amazing deals to be had out there right now. Seems like a good excuse to upgrade to me...

My monitor crapped out on its own about 2 months before my defense date. I quickly went out and bought a spare monitor on Craigslist for $20 and used it as a desktop for 2 weeks before that connection died as well (it was really unhappy about having to put out video constantly in that path). You can probably get away with a reasonably priced monitor from Craigslist for quite a bit less than a new one.

Basically, comparing the price and effort of buying and installing a new monitor with the price of a new laptop, the new laptop made more sense. Especially when you consider that after 3 years...it's probably not going to be long before something else goes wrong.

About a month ago I stepped on my laptop and cracked the screen. After looking at new laptops, I bought a new screen online for about $100 and installed it myself with a little help from my dad and it has been fantastic. It was pretty easy and neither one of us are very handy with computers. Basically all you have to do it unscrew the screen, unplug two things, plug them into the new screen, screw it back in and your done. Took about a half an hour.

What brand of laptop did you have?

Why's it a f***tard move?

Probably more of an Apple decision than a Verizon decision (that a carrier wants the iPhone and would start selling it if they had the chance should be a given)

Yea WSJ has reported it, not only 4 times, but 4 times within the last year. I don't see it happening either. If it does, Android Developers are going to be pissed because not only is VZW now giving them a shelf life of a month before a better one comes out, they're acquiring their direct competition. Pretty dumb at this point to get the iPhone. Either way, I'm glad I'm off Verizon. Greaet service, horrible pricing. I'll take my $300 bill and put it towards a car note instead.

Oh god...

My laptop stopped working, possibly due to a HDD error.

So I took out my HDD and put it in my external hard drive, and now computers want me to format it to access it...all 4 years of work.

Anyone know how to recover files?!

Wait, what?

http://geeksaresexy.blogspot.com/2006/01/f...cover-data.html

Not exactly the most foolproof or advanced method but there's enough people I've heard say it works for me to believe it. It's kind of a "what do you really have to lose" proposition, if you're lucky you might get the hard drive to spin just long enough to recover some data, if not, well your hard drive was f***ed before, and it's still f***ed. Otherwise you could pay a s***load of money to a professional to copy all the data the hard way.

I've only ever had one HDD fail and it didn't work, I guess mine was pretty thorough when it killed itself.

Just popped it in...if this works lost, I owe you five years of my life.

I wish I had been able to recover the documents the most...oh god...

Does anyone know if Best Buy can do some decent data recovery?

If you got like 300 bucks and there's nothing better for you to do with it.

If it means recovering all my files, I might have to bite the bullet.

Just took HDD out of the freezer, lets see how this works.
