Stupid question, but what about Gartrell? He is playing (well, hitting at least) quite well this ST. 4th OF? Or native-English-speaking version of Luis Terrero?

Don't insult the man. He's got big time power.

I remember when Terrero had big time power.

I like Lillibridge's tweets. I look forward to hearing from him about someplace other than the south side of Chicago.

Has any of the guys in this conversation done anything to justify bringing them along, or are we just fighting over who has "potential"?

Try to find another cheap, speedy player who can play 2nd, 3rd, ss, lf, cf, & rf.

If he gets playing time, he can put up good stats. He did it last year while Teahen was out.

I agree that Lillibridge is a valuable utility player.

Gartrell>Terrero...no comparison.

morel also has experience at ss last year. Don't know how good he was there but seems like our if is pretty felxible if a couple starters get injured at the same time. I know they wouldn't want to move him but I am talking about the extreme situation where lillibridge may have been "valuable" for the team

I remember when he got caught with the hidden ball trick, at 3rd base.

If he's so valuable, KW will be able to get something for him that he can send to the minors for a while.

Lillibridge sucks and always will suck. He's out of options, so what. Let him go suck for someone else.

Wow, Dick Allen. You usually aren't this vicious. You must really dislike Lilly the ballplayer. I remember last year he was pretty darn good at the plate.

I have a sneaky feeling both may make the team. Is that possible.

If it's one or the other I think Lilly makes it. Don't Oz and Kenny both kind of have a hard on for Lillibridge?

If Brent Morel doesn't make the team, now that Viciedo is hurt...it's very, very, very likely that the Stealth Elf comes along.

I believe Milledge is a non-rostered invitee. He's looked good so far, so has McPhearson, who's another non-rostered player. Most likely these two get released early so they can sign elsewhere.

If Quentin gets off to a slow start, I look for Viciedo to get a starting shot at RF. Danks, Gartrell and Flowers are another year away IMO.

Like it or not, Vizquel, Castro, Teahen and Lillibridge comprise the bench unless they carry only 6 relievers.

.248 OBP. 36 strikeouts in 98 ABs. 3 walks, that's pretty darn good at the plate? His OBP was actually lower than his career .254 OBP with a career .194 batting average. He's brutal. Both Oz and Kenny need a few bottles of Viagra if they are going to become semi erect thinking about Lillibridge. Ozzie in particular has never thought too highly of his approach at the plate.

There's a far greater needed for someone who can pinch hit off the bench than a guy who can be the 3rd string SS. That's why Milledge makes far more sense.

Lillibridge was hitting out of his mind on a ridiculous hot streak (to the tune of like .450) for about20 or 30 PAs, and after that he was garbage. But overall, for the year, his numbers almost looked respectable on the season (almost) because of that hot streak.

I mean, look at August and September and tell me what you see? It's even worse than you thought you remembered when you originally watched the games, isn't it? 40 PAs and a .307 OPS with 17 strikeouts

Terrero had better overall tools (much better prospect during his time). But I think Gartrell will have a better career. (which isn't saying much as I think he'll be a 4th/5th OF/LHP smasher at best)

Milledge and McPherson both signed minor league deals, so we can stash them in Charlotte if we want.

He did hit one of the longest homers I've seen by a right-handed Sox hitter.

I love Brent's skill set off the bench. How is having a guy who can play 6 positions, with pop and +speed so terrible? I wouldn't mind having him on the bench for 5 years. Unless The Mill is faster than The Bridge, why take him? If nothing else The Bridge is an excellent late-inning pinch runner for our slow guys.

QUOTE (knightni @ Mar 11, 2011 -> 08:07 PM)
You're looking at the entire season. Look at June and July when he got more playing time.

He held an average over .270 until mid September.

Look at the stats and look at your second sentence. He played more in August and September. His stats as a starter were .171 avg. 203 OBP .234 SLG and he fanned 29 times in 76 AB. Thats like having a pitcher in your line up.

You love guys who can't hit sour apples and are shaky in the field? The Mill isn't slow, but he can't run with The Bridge. He's fast enough as a pinch runner and at least you could use The Mill to pinch hit and get an occassional start. He hits lefties well and Teahen hits righties well. The only thing the Bridge hits is the bench after an at bat. I like the names the Mill and the Bridge.

1B: Konerko, Dunn, Teahen

2B: Beckham, Vizquel, Teahen

SS: Ramirez, Vizqiel, Morel

3B: Morel, Vizquel, Teahen

LF: Pierre. Teahen

CF: Rios

RF: Quentin, Teahen

So what if Lillibridge can play 6 positions, the only backup that we truly need is OF, and Millidge is a better OF, the speed difference is minimal, and Lilli is a .180ish batter besides a 20 at bat streak.

Milledge is a better bat, has more potential, and fits our needs better.

I'm just now seeing this, posting the links actually says the exact opposite of your conclusion. When he got more playing time in August and September he was about as bad as is possible.

Lastings Milledge is so much better than Lillibridge. But that might not necessary dictate the winner.

Milledge is better in four out of the five areas (except speed). He also is a much more natural CF and outfielder in general than Lilly. Granted Lilly can play the INF, but with Teahen/Vizquel he will never see time there.

To me it comes down to whether you really need that extra "speed" on the bench. Milledge is slower, but not a slouch and IMO, can easily be that late-inning speed substitute. Add in he is just better in practically all facets of the game, this should be a no-brainer.

I find this interesting:

Lillibridge career minor league slash stats:

.268/.348/.409/.758

Milledge career major league slash stats:

.269/.328/.394/.723
