Why so quiet so far?

Featured Replies

Maybe because it's the situation that the Sox are in, but it seems overly quiet this year. Is it that the GMs are asking for too much? Too many teams think they're still in it? Lack of financial flexibility?

I realize no one here knows for sure, but what do you guys think?

Garza deal must start the parade of trades. Sox face big challenges in trying to move guys who make a lot of money and have skill sets that can be debated.

If I were the Cubs, I wouldn't get too greedy with Garza. Right now, they have the most desirable starting pitcher on the market. However, if Peavy comes back strong tomorrow, I think a lot of teams would prefer paying a premium for the guy with another 2 1/2 years of team control than the pure rental.

Also, one thing that hurts teams acquiring Garza is they no longer get a comp pick if he leaves. That rule change is going to have a huge change on the value of rentals going forward.

Yeah, I had forgotten about that. That has to be a big factor as well, as rentals' value decreases.

There is 12 days left, people are probably trying to drive up costs

Yea and the GMs of fringe teams maybe want to hold another week to better gauge their chances.

Any big in-division series this week?

The closer to the deadline the more likely someone is going to panic and give up a lot more than they normally would.

I think Crain would have been moved already if he hadn't been hurt.

The other guys we are under less pressure to move, so we can wait to make sure we find the best offer.

Or the more likely a selling team is to cave and just get what they can when they can. It's a two way street.

Also, I was referring to it being quiet throughout baseball. I don't want Hahn to make a move just to make one either.

The answer to that question is "Kenny Williams is no longer a GM".

Wasn't he knows as 'stealth' 'under the radar' GM?

He was beautiful.

There are plenty of teams that need help in both leagues. Right now they're all trying to pretend they are going with other options and not willing to give up minor league talent in order to squeeze the sellers into accepting less .This is balanced by the sellers saying we have our asking price and we aren't going to settle for less.

So the buyers reassess their teams day by day hoping they don't go on any losing streaks in the last 10 days before the deadline. Eventually someone will cave. Sox don't have to move Peavy or Rios but they're in a prime position because they seem to possess the most talent on the market right now. Yet they have the offseason and next year to trade either or both . The iron might never be hotter for the Sox .

We have about 6 guys that I think NEED to be traded in the next 10 days. We better be making at least 3 trades.

What 6 are those ?

I'm going to speak for Joe:

Rios

Peavy

Lindstrom

Crain

Ramirez

DeAza?

What are the chances of the Sox stand pat and not make a major move? I would hate to see Rios, Peavy and Ramirez's contract not being moved.

I will say very high. I dont think any of those three will be gone.

The front office has been reluctant for a rebuild. They might want to roll the dice again and see if they can surprise. We didn't rebuild in 2007. As much as we should tear it down this FO might not have the stomach for it.

Worse case scenario we trade Rios only for C prospects and salary relief. Crain might be a waiver deal if he can't pitch before the deadline.

I don't see how they don't trade Peavy. I think he's gone by the deadline, same with Lindstrom and probably Crain. I don't think Rios/Ramirez get dealt.

I'm saying Rios goes too--Pittsburgh makes sense, and if Nelson Cruz gets busted, the Rangers will call. Alexei...no. His remaining contract is too big to take on. Sox would have to eat too much.

I also think there will be one surprise deal that nobody sees coming.
