December 3, 201312 yr Author QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 2, 2013 -> 08:31 PM) @scottmerkin: White Sox also have re-signed Hector Gimenez to a Minor League deal He actually wasn't terrible up in the bigs
December 3, 201312 yr You know were dying for a legitimate rumor when tendering a contract to Tyler Flowers creates this kinda buzz. At this point I just wanna see moves, any White Sox moves. Do something bold, do something dumb. I just need to see something happen....anything
December 3, 201312 yr Tyler Flowers still has an option remaining. Re-signing him means nothing other than he won't be playing for another team next year.
December 3, 201312 yr Who cares, its 950K. He's worth bringing into camp at that price. Its not inconceivable that he could be a useful part time player next year.
December 3, 201312 yr QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Dec 2, 2013 -> 07:49 PM) Who cares, its 950K. He's worth bringing into camp at that price. Its not inconceivable that he could be a useful part time player next year. Hell, the Sox shoulda gave me that 950k
December 3, 201312 yr Nothing wrong with bringing back Flowers at $950k. First, he creates some leverage for Hahn to use in trade talks for a legit catching upgrade by being able to say "we have two young catchers we believe in". Second, assuming Hahn can find a LH catcher, Flowers can push Phelgey for the backup spot and potentially provide the organization some depth at the position if he wins the job. Worst case scenario, at that salary he should be moveable in spring training and basically cost us nothing.
December 3, 201312 yr Doesn't surprise me. I just hope he isn't the opening day starter. Hopefully they sign AJ. Just makes too much sense and he certainly won't be blocking anyone.
December 3, 201312 yr I'm amazed that people wanted to the Sox to bring in JP Arencibia and then are irate that the Sox brought back Flowers. This is the ultimate in "who cares" signings. If the dude sucks, he'll get DFA'd. This signing is merely to insure that they have 2 MLB catchers on the roster.

December 3, 201312 yr Scott Merkin @scottmerkin 3m Rick Hahn said both Flowers and Phegley have more than what they showed in '13 and could be conceivable long-term solutions but.. Hahn: "We have made no secret of the fact that we need to get more out of that position than we got in 2013, so we continue to evaluate.. ... both our internal and external options for improvement."q

I'd give Phegley one more year. I'd have preferred it as a backup. Now he's the starter I hope and Flowers is the backup.
December 5, 201312 yr QUOTE (ewokpelts @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 05:07 PM) Why? Because it's $1 million for a catcher who is solid defensively, knows the staff, is well liked in the clubhouse, and can hit the ball 500 feet. Edited December 5, 201312 yr by witesoxfan

Plus if he ever gets hot we can have him split time with Dunn at the DH spot since we don't have another RH hitting DH to soak up 100....wait...

Tyler Flowers, in his career vs LHP (188 PAs): .185/.241/.353/.593 And I don't think I've ever seen a White Sox manager use his backup catcher in the same lineup as his starting catcher unless there were 3 catchers on the roster.
December 5, 201312 yr QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 09:40 AM) And I don't think I've ever seen a White Sox manager use his backup catcher in the same lineup as his starting catcher unless there were 3 catchers on the roster. I know, I know. It's the same reason I can say with confidence that the veteran will get his at bats instead of the rookie at 1b - that's standard managing.

Didn't Paulie say himself he wasn't going to play a lot? There is no reason to think Abreu is going to ride any pine, except for occassional breaks in 2014. None. You are just way off base. Konerko himself has said he couldn't handle that kind of load. Do you not believe him?
December 5, 201312 yr QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 10:14 AM) Konerko himself has said he couldn't handle that kind of load. Do you not believe him? Frankly...no. I don't think they'll try to play him everyday but I think they'll play him often enough that it infuriates me. I'm so used to it from this team I just expect it.
