I really like Pods when he was in the booth.

Its because he's easy on the eyes isn't it? Would help the female population tune in at least.

If Rongey is a bigger part of radio broadcasts or gets an expanded tv role, we'll know the marketing and broadcasting groups are completely tone deaf.

 

As it is, the fans are already voting by their lack of interest...worst ratings of all 30 teams. I'm not even sure they were doing that in the 70's and mid to late 80's.

Hawk is semi retiring. He is extremely annoying. He should retire fulltime. But whatever the Sox do, I hope they don't ask Podsednik to replace him. He was so bad I turned the sound off.

I worship him, too, but I don't understand this one. I mean, he's got to be rich beyond belief. Stay in a hotel for half the home games. So you stay 45 nights in a hotel at 200 bucks a night (check Air B and B and you could probably get a really nice condo for 200 a night). That's 9,000 bucks. At Hawk's age, 9000 bucks is obviously like 50 bucks to the normal Joe. Not even an annoyance. You might even be able to write it off on your taxes.

 

The other home games, suck it up and drive home and back as you've done the last many years. It's only April through October. I don't understand how the team would OK him only doing road games. Just seems ridiculous.

 

That said, I'd go for Stone as lead announcer on all home games with somebody like Paciorek or Frank Thomas or AJP or Buehrle joining the team as home games color man. On the road, it's Hawk as play by play guy with Stone; and Farmer/DJ as radio crew.

Why would anyone that has his family less than two hours away, choose to stay in a hotel room for 6 months out of the year?

 

He could get a driver, it's just the daily commute that he's tired of taking.

 

Plus, Chicago, while a nice city, is not an old person's city.

It is still 2 hours in a car coming, and 2 hours in a car after the game. I'm sure if Hawk's daughter and grandkids were based in Lemont, he would be doing home games only, but as been pointed out, this should be a positive when finding another announcer, as I would think being based in Chicago in the summer is far more attractive than a job that is almost exclusively on the road.

I know from personal experience, driving 1.5+ hours to and from work every day gets really old really fast. I can't imagine doing it at Hawk's age.

If the sox are ditching rongey and leaving him at the score, I'd highly doubt he'd be the tv replacement.

No offense to Rongey or Garfien, but I would think they would be shooting a little higher on the TV side. I know they have broken in analysts on TV, and Farmer, and Hawk for that matter, got their PBP starts on radio and TV respectively with the Sox, but to me, it's highly unlikely this opening is filled by a rookie PBP guy. Maybe Stone does PBP and they bring in a color guy which to me seems like a Rowand type, but if it is a PBP guy, I think it will be someone with experience.

1) nobody has said he would stay in chicago for 6 months straight.

2) You are arguing as if the only two options are him staying at home for 12 months or being in a hotel in chicago for six. That is not hte scenario. It's why would he fly all over the country for away games rather than "travel" to chicago for only home series.

Double D did play-by-play in innings 1-3 and 7-9 with Hawk as color guy, and vice versa innings 4-6. They were a great broadcast team. A ton of mutual admiration for one another. They were tough to get used to and appreciate after the five year roller coaster ride with Harry Caray and Jimmy Piersall, but they turned out to be quite good, IMO.

I don;t expect it to be his final tour. He has said emphatically that he would like to die in the announcers booth. The only way that I see it being final for him is that the wind git taken out of his sail so much this year after all of the hype, that maybe he really doesnt see us being a REAL contender any time soon, and sick of using whatever time he has available and getting all bummed out and announcing for continual losers. Then trveling home and gtting up and doing it all over again only to get bummed out some more. I REALLY wonder if he is really taking the time off because he may really BELIEVE that our situation is not REAL Fixable anytime soon into turning us into a DOMINATING consistent threatening MLB team. If we were dominating.......there is no way he'd leave the home booth. With Laroche and Danks (real contract sucker-uppers) and young guys that haven't really shown that they will develope into consistent powerhouse batting stars, plus having so many holes to fill with a limited budget.............. why would he come back? I really think it is his (behind the scenes way) of saying "I have had enough of the same putridness year after year after year with no end in sight." "If I would have had a real reason to stay... I would".
