November 3, 201510 yr Apparently all 4 had surgeries and should be ready to go for regular training in december. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseb...1103-story.html
November 3, 201510 yr Good...Flowers and Rick Hahn get to use the injury excuse for his poor batting again.
November 3, 201510 yr QUOTE (Baron @ Nov 3, 2015 -> 04:31 PM) Good...Flowers and Rick Hahn get to use the injury excuse for his poor batting again. Well his magic glasses fixed his hitting so it must be an injury. Next year we can get him a magic bat with magic batting gloves.
November 3, 201510 yr QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Nov 3, 2015 -> 04:37 PM) Well his magic glasses fixed his hitting so it must be an injury. Next year we can get him a magic bat with magic batting gloves. I just cant wait for him to be off arbitration. Let some other team deal with this crap.
November 3, 201510 yr QUOTE (Baron @ Nov 3, 2015 -> 02:31 PM) Good...Flowers and Rick Hahn get to use the injury excuse for his poor batting again. An even better excuse is simply that he is a catcher.
November 3, 201510 yr QUOTE (Vance Law @ Nov 3, 2015 -> 05:34 PM) An even better excuse is simply that he is a catcher. 21st in wRC+ amongst catchers with 300+ plate appearances. Dude is a bad hitter for the position too.
November 4, 201510 yr QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Nov 3, 2015 -> 11:58 PM) 21st in wRC+ amongst catchers with 300+ plate appearances. Dude is a bad hitter for the position too. But people on this board are hard to please. I was getting fried on this board for saying Salvy Perez was an outstanding catcher for the Royals.
November 4, 201510 yr QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 3, 2015 -> 08:32 PM) But people on this board are hard to please. I was getting fried on this board for saying Salvy Perez was an outstanding catcher for the Royals. That's not even true greg. I can't find the thread now, but you were saying that Perez was a top offensive catcher and people used statistics to show that many catchers hit better than him. That doesn't mean he's not a great catcher, especially for the price.
November 4, 201510 yr QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Nov 3, 2015 -> 03:58 PM) 21st in wRC+ amongst catchers with 300+ plate appearances. Dude is a bad hitter for the position too. Subpar starter with the bat. And the difference between him and the 6 or 8 guys ahead of him is not that much. Catchers suck at hitting across the league. He's considered a top 2 pitch framer in MLB this year. Because you don't have an easy way to quantify and contextualize that extremely important part of catching, you undervalue it. He helps the pitchers be better and more effective. He's an overall averagely valuable catcher. Edited November 4, 201510 yr by Vance Law
November 4, 201510 yr QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 3, 2015 -> 06:32 PM) But people on this board are hard to please. I was getting fried on this board for saying Salvy Perez was an outstanding catcher for the Royals. Tyler Flowers was a better hitter than Perez in 2014. I'll type it again for some reason. Tyler Flowers was a better hitter than Perez in 2014. Perez was a bit better in 2015. Over the past 2 years they've been pretty comparably catcherly with their hitting.

Because you don't have an easy way to quantify and contextualize that extremely important part of catching, you undervalue it. He helps the pitchers be better and more effective. He's an overall averagely valuable catcher. Huh? I never once mentioned anything about Tyler Flowers other than his bat, because that's the only thing that was being debated in this thread. Are we moving the goalposts now? And I've said time & time again on this board that there is no good way to quantity the true value of a catcher. Pitch framing is just one of many reasons why. Not sure where you get this idea I don't the importance of pitch framing. However, I would argue you're likely undervaluing the impact pitchers themselves have on pitch framing and therefore are overvaluing Flowers.
November 4, 201510 yr QUOTE (raBBit @ Nov 3, 2015 -> 04:29 PM) I've said it before, but if not for the Sox being completely bereft of positional talent, there is a great rationale for moving him. Enlighten me, because I don't get why you would trade a lead off man when there are so few of them in the game today. Unless you're getting a massive haul of prospects back and rebuilding, I don't see the logic. Edited November 4, 201510 yr by Joshua Strong

November 4, 201510 yr 2015 MLB-wide catcher wRC+: 85 American League catchers: 82 Flowers: 78 Meh. 2015 was the worst year for catcher offense since since 2007.
November 6, 201510 yr They should just DFA flowers and make LaRoche catch next year. That way his bat would play to league average!
November 6, 201510 yr QUOTE (SoxAce @ Nov 4, 2015 -> 12:13 AM) Jesus, that's how many surgeries for Micah now? Kid is made of glass. Yeah I don't think he has a future here personally. I think he gets dealt this offseason.
November 6, 201510 yr They should just DFA flowers and make LaRoche catch next year. That way his bat would play to league average! That brings up a serious question: could you tell an overpaid, underperforming player that you are going to make him catch if he doesn't retire and save you the money and roster spot. Would that work?
November 6, 201510 yr QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Nov 6, 2015 -> 02:02 PM) That brings up a serious question: could you tell an overpaid, underperforming player that you are going to make him catch if he doesn't retire and save you the money and roster spot. Would that work? That's awesome. I think he'd probably call his agent and you'd have a grievance on your hands.
November 6, 201510 yr QUOTE (shysocks @ Nov 6, 2015 -> 02:12 PM) That's awesome. I think he'd probably call his agent and you'd have a grievance on your hands. The way around a grievance could be that you will make him catch without giving him the option of retiring to make it less threatening. That way he can decide he doesn't want to catch an go out on his own
November 6, 201510 yr One day of watching him try to catch would make the team scrap it's plan. It would never work, and would probably piss off a lot of your roster.
