2026 Spring Training Thread
I agree there's credit for colson development. This discussion had been about scouting and bringing in/fixing players. Can't get credit for fixing your own guys. An actual fix opportunity at this point is curtis Mead. If he puts up a 110ish ops+ and 2 war then that's a fixed scenario. Beating all projections easily. edit: I'll also add that I was one of the few here who never soured on Colson and never worried about the ups and downs --- only the back. Even a few of our resident optimists were lower on him than me by a good bit.

When the Sox acquired Vargas, his 2025 Projected WAR was 1.2 and his projected OPS+ was 102. He finished at 1.3 and 101. Just because some people like to overreact to 400 MLB at bats and decided that was who Miguel Vargas was for the rest of his career, doesn't mean that's actually what was expected of him. The Sox haven't gotten more out of Vargas, they got exactly what was expected out of him. Hardly a case of fixing a guy.

Fixing is getting something more out of player than expected. Not getting the 50 median outcome of their statistical trajectory.

They didnt fix Vargas. Vargas has performed exactly in line with his projections from the day they acquired him. Not sure why people continue to sing the fixed Vargas praises. Montgomery has only ever been in there system. They dont get credit for "fixing" something they created.

Low on base, high K. That profile is perceived as more risky, especially as you age, so guys with that profile haven't been getting paid post 30. It also didn't help Saurez that the first time he was set to hit free agency, he had the worst year of his career. In the past 25 years, of over 1100 qualified players, there have been 52 player who have run a K-rate as high as Suarez with an OBP at his level or lower. Of those 52, only 10 had positive offensive profiles over that period (wRC+ at 100 or greater). Of those 10, none of them have aged well: Gallo, Chris Davis, Stevn Souza Jr, Chris Carter, Patrick Wisdom, and Franmil Reyes to name a few. I get the hesitance with his profile, and don't think it's driven by anything but his production. He's a good player though, no doubt. Just rare type of success which teams are more hesitant to bet on.

There's a few angles that make sense. We can argue until we're blue in the face about the timing, and the direction over time, but... This is a very good draft. They have a shot of being very very bad rest of the year and positioning themselves in a way that they have a shot at an elite player. I think it's a really deep draft too, so 10th might be great. They're freeing up a ton of cap space, and acquiring a ton of picks (obviously 2nd round picks are basically worth nothing so big gripe here). So they could try and trade for Zion this off-season, say, and sign Austin Reaves while getting a high draft pick. They won't because we're the Bulls, and we're a joke, but it's there for the taking.

This has been a trend throughout the game for the past 2 decades. This is why I don't think we're going to see a long stoppage. I believe the majority of the players union has started to understand that the top 1% having big wage growth while there's has gone backwards (relative to revenue growth), and they will be open to change on more formalized and transparent revenue distributions and a cap/floor. A cap and floor benefits the vast majority of players. It's only negative impact is at the top of the pay band where growth isn't as big as it is in the non-cap environment.

Missi can play next to PWill and form the Trash Brothers. I always saw missi attached to zion. I'd prefer that!

Undersized. Out of control. Poor shooter. Bad defender. Questionable finisher. Besides that, he's got a shot.

No idea what the Bulls are doing collecting these second round picks. AK really is an idiot.

I wouldnt hate a push for Ja. A lot of risk, but this team has no other hope. Don't you pay Billy to be this culture setter.

White Sox acquired RHPs Jordan Hicks and David Sandlin from BOS
It's crazy to me to think Getz has no say or influence over the baseball budget that he manages. That's not how a single organization I've ever seen operate.

Yes, Getz offered Jerry what he wanted. Big savings in return for an uptick in marginal spending. That's how he sold the job in my opinion. "We have always gone cheap when rebuilding and ramped the payroll back up as the team starts winning." Relative to league revenues and spending, this is the cheapest the organization has ever been under Jerry. It's not as if the Sox have gone through a lot of "rebuilds" either. I get your OK with the operations of the team. We'll agree to disagree.

They've been that way for a day or two. I still don't really see it but today's moves make it a little more likely.

Just want to say, what im quoting is an actual quote from the athletic under team rankings. Nothing law said on a podcast or interview. I think your points are fine. Id argue theres been much more bad than good as it relates to his baseball moves. Im also just not sure what you would define as comes crumbling down? He's never not lost 100 games. To me, Getz offered Jerry what most GMs wouldnt/wont. To have a bottom 3-5 payroll in a major market if he gave Getz a few million for management and org overhaul. He traded 110 million for 5 million. When I say a major job of these roles is influence, I mean things like AJ Preller going to SD and convincing/motivating ownership to spend. Youre absolutely right in that Getz is an executive, but he's operating the Sox like a PE teardown where he's going lean on the player side to maximize ownership outcomes while selling a narrative of transformation. I think thats where our views diverge. Im still rooting for the team but dont understand the praise for a suit pitching a consulting transformation to copy other teams...

Sox get an off season "C"
Seems about right to me. They did what you'd expect an average team in their position to do. Which is a step up for them from the F and D of the past two offseasons. Problem is Jim Bowden the GM makes Getz look like Friedman.

Yes, and a huge part of the leadership roles Getz sat in is influence and having influence. Its a failure on him to have failures and simply blame those above him. Now his job is to influence ownership into investing in the roster and hes been a disaster there too. I said what I said though and dont want to derail the thread.

Take it up with Keith. He addresses the graduating prospects. He also agrees the system should be better. I'm not going to repeat everything we've been discussing for the past three years, but i obviously agree with Keith. Getz didnt do his homework for 2 years and now he's doing it but at a C level. I'm not going to applaud that. People are thrilled about a team with a 66ish win forecast. Couldn't be me. Maybe it works out, because randomness is what makes baseball great, but Getz hasn't reinvented anything here. I'm not going to get into you claiming he's a better GM than Kenny Williams.

White Sox acquired RHPs Jordan Hicks and David Sandlin from BOS
He lost the 4th most games in baseball history over a three year span and made horrible trades and signings as gm, was in charge of one of the worst minor league systems in baseball, and did nothing but agree with the owner moving towards historic cheapness.

Keith Law had the Sox with the 8th best system in baseball which was their highest ranking from what I saw. This has nothing to do with him not being high on the prospects. Getz has already deserved to be fired once, at minimum. The victory laps over Chris Getz this off-season have been wild! Further proof and evidence that if you lower the bar so low, people will claim you're dominating when you're just don't basic things.
