QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Mar 11, 2009 -> 04:50 AM) So, if he does it just a little bit, as long as it's less than W, and as long as it is for the good of the people, that's ok. Yeah, It's always different. Pretty much the response I expected. Actually that's not what I said at all. What I really said was, only time will tell whether Obama decides to use signing statements in a more limited way.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Mar 10, 2009 -> 04:16 PM) I seem to recall Dems being all up in arms about Bush and his 'signing statements'. How will those same people react to this? Obama says he will do it, but smarter, and slightly different. Obama is pretty much saying 'hey, go ahead and vote for this bill, I'll just tell my peeps to disregard that little portion that bothers you'. Anything to get a vote, I guess. http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/20...-will-igno.html Actions will speak louder then words on this issue. Signing statements can be appropriate when small parts of very large bills are deemed unconstitutional by the President. So instead of a very large bill being vetoed, only a small portion will be. We'll have to see how often Obama decides to do this though... Bush used this more often than anyone ever has, particularly because of the bizarre constitutional views of his administration.

QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Mar 10, 2009 -> 05:27 PM) im interested to get some takes on this. are any of the following items, socialistic (if that's even a word) - public education - police departments - fire departments - public hospitals - military defense - homeland security - libraries - park districts - water/sewage departments and if not, how is "socialized medicine" any different then say, "socialized police protection" None of those things in and of themselves are socialist I wouldn't think. I don't know what the hell all this "socialism" nonsense is. Part of the ideology of socialism is the equality of condition... I don't see that with Obama. Maybe equality of opportunity.

QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Feb 26, 2009 -> 01:14 PM) Del Toro is the new Jim Henson if you ask me. With quite a twisted side, of course. This isn't directed by Del Toro by the way, so don't get too excited.

I'm not one to be easily offended and kind of doubt that the cartoon was meant to be offensive. But I just don't understand the link between the ramagin' chimpanzee and the stimulus bill. The cartoon doesn't make any sense.

This may be nothing more than a passing interest kind of things but here's Obama's first interview with Canadian media since becoming Prez. It seems that it was pretty well received up here, but there's wasn't anything particularly mindblowing, and the CBC isn't exactly al-Arabiyah.

Obama's coming to Canada on Thursday, and needless to say this is all the Canadian media can talk about these last couple of days.

I think the Frontline episode tonight will be talking about the near collapse you guys were talking about earlier. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/meltdown/

QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Feb 2, 2009 -> 12:50 AM) I believe Cuba is technically one of the few "Second World" countries that actually remain. Yah, that's interesting, and what I thought of when I saw what cubano wrote... Developing country would probably be the proper term.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 27, 2009 -> 11:10 AM) There is an old Vulcan proverb. Only Nixon could go to China. I think I'm thinking the same thing. One might assume that because Netanyahu is a hawk that he'd be more reluctant to get any kind of peace deal, but things often run counter to expectations. So who knows... -
QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ Dec 15, 2008 -> 11:43 PM) I find this beyond stupid, did not laugh once. No way. Usually I'm not a fan of comedy in musical format but this is both catchy and funny. And Jamie-Lynn looks great.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Nov 11, 2008 -> 02:23 PM) Interesting, I thought Lugar already declined? He's fully qualified and probably the best for the job, though. What's this declining nonsense? My impression from up here in the north was that if the President asks you to do something you do it. Another impression I often have is, that if you say you're declining, what's really happened is you've been told you're not going to be picked.

QUOTE (DBAHO @ Nov 4, 2008 -> 02:07 PM) 48%. Not too bad for a non - American I'd say. Try 88% for this Canadian Political nerd. I kind of guessed on Vilsack being the first declared. -
Obama will win Viriginia.

QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Nov 1, 2008 -> 06:36 PM) About what I expected, a family member of Obamas is here illegally, violates election rules and is living in government assisted housing and whoever leaked the info was at fault. Yah, member of Obama's family... They're about as close as Dick Cheney and Barack Obama. In the meantime here's what other Republicans have been doing. Quality human beings these types. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/worl...icle5063279.ece The Republican party desperately needs some time in the wilderness.

QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 31, 2008 -> 09:56 PM) As someone who's rooting for Obama, how concerned should I be that McCain is leading in the Zogby one day poll? Just get out and work harder. Don't sit around diddling your thumbs worrying.
