/repeat Felix Diaz Quality Starts: 2 Run Support: 3.66 Jason Grilli Quality Starts: 0 Run Support: 8.06 Felix also gets dogged for his giving up the Gopher ball as a starter. But it's not exactly much different than Grilli. Grilli 33.1IP - 9HR's Diaz 32.2IP - 10HR's I agree with jeckle... You could physically see the change in Diaz's next to last start.. There's no doubt in my mind that Diaz would have a sub 4 ERA since that start vs. Oakland if he continued as a starter.. It was like a lightbulb went off over the kids head in the third inning of that start. I noted it on that night, and was cautiously optimistic. Now I'm convinced. Sure he's posted a 1.17 ERA in Sept mostly out of the pen, but I don't think there's any reason to think that he would continue to have THAT kind of success out of the pen. Neal Cotts had an ERA of 1.5something after 12 innings this season. Adkins had an ERA well below 3 all the way until July. I think his "getting it" just happened to coincide with ozzie deciding Grilli was his 5th starter.
-
I think the worst he will be is an "average" first baseman... He possesses the skills to surprise a lot of people. And if he is playing everyday due to Paulie's departure, I'd have to assume we got a good return on Palie, i.e. a good starter/dominant reliever. Gload + Stud pitcher > Konerko + Gload as a super-sub.

I haven't responded yet, but I'm in... I vote for 6 keepers. 7 I think makes the league a little too static. 6 also should make for some interesting calls.. I have some really good pitchers, but how many should I keep? Will I be able to pick up enough offense if I save 4 pitchers? Will Roger Clemens pitch again? he's going to be a tough one to decide on. tough decisions.

I keep sending KW links to my blog in hopes that he chooses me As for podesta, his first real decisions were the trade deadline ones... So it's way too early to grade him... Let's see what he does with his first off-season.
-
I'll definetly have to take your word for it... I don't get to watch near the number of games that you do... I've seen at least part of 141 of the 151 Sox games played this season(it's sad that I know that), but I've seen a total of maybe 12 Angels games. It just seems to me that whereas ozzie is bunting and giving away outs seemingly without discretion, Socia has a much better feel for the offensive aspects of the game, and knows when it's condusive to give up an out for 1-run instead of keeping it in the bank in hopes for more runs. I haven't seen him enough to know what he's done to the pitching staff.

Yeah if there was a dog house section in my Blog it would be occupied by Timo Perez and Joe Crede. The penthouse section would be Rowand and Diaz right now... I've always been high on him, but he never gave me the numbers to back it up. I don't like writing about something without at least some statistical backing to it. Here's a comment I left on Betsy's blog back when Diaz's ERA was about 10. -------------------------- Oh and I plowed through some box scores today.... In reference to the Jon Garland "big inning" thing that Hawk and DJ keep stressing... Here's a sample Some of the numbers are damning, others aren't. -- 51% of JG's runs allowed come in "big innings" compared to MB's 41%. JG has allowed 16 big innings in 202 innings, or 8% of his innings. MB has allowed 14 big innings in 227 innings or about 6% of his innings.

Jason Grilli Quality Start-O-Meter: 0 Felix Diaz Quality Start-O-Meter: 2 /just saying.
-
I stradle the line... It's obvious that you can build a good team by carefully evaluating the stats. And I have bought in to the philosophy that you really shouldn't be giving away outs.. But I don't think you should take the game out of your managers hands...Mahka in oakland makes pitching changes and that is about it. A perfect situation for me would be to have a Billy Beane type GM w/ Scocia as manager.

Aaron Rowand = Old & Busted Timo Perez = teh new hotness -
Yeah it worked, but the fence only lasted a few days... The dog actually never leaves the yard now, whether it was because of the fence I can't say.
-
My neighbors installed one, but then the kids in the ara used to ride their bikes by and drive the dog crazy.... He would try to chase them, and would be getting shocked the whole time, Then he would let out this terrible shrill bark -- The kids kept riding by, the 'fence' was eventually removed, and everyone is happier, except the kids.
-
Thankfully I didn't actually use the NHL comparison, that was taken verbatim from the linked MLB article... That was their attempt to make their stat appear meaningfull.
-
I actually like carl too... I just wish he could guarentee us a healthy season, where he can play the field. It sucks having $4 MIL tied up in somebody that's such a question mark.

Not green I missed that quote Jason Grilli Quality Starts: 0 Felix Diaz Quality Starts: 2 Somebody explain to KW that Grilli has 2 victories because of his average 8.04 Run support. Felix Diaz on the other hand has had run support of 3.66 -- See the difference KW... I know there are plenty of people here who think that Diaz is a T-ball stand... But he's a much more solid option as a 5th starter than Grilli is. Yes he was was lit up like a christmas tree at first... He had an ERA of 10.17 in his first 23 innings, giving up 11HR's over that span... Since then he has an ERA of 3.42 in 23.2 innings, while not giving up a single longball. -
That's a direct reflection of our piss poor OBP.
