QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 19, 2010 -> 12:19 AM) I hope he doesnt so that they get the same Bobby we had, but I will be pissed if all the sudden he decides he wants to prove the White Sox wrong The Bobby we had still had 27 saves after 29, 30, 40 and 41 in the previous seasons. I think you guys are going to be surprised that our new closer(s) may have trouble doing as well as Bobby did here. He's only 29. He's 6-4 and fat but he can throw hard. Lots of baseball players are tubby. He's not old. He can still pitch. And I'm not going to pine for Bobby if our new closers suck or actually blow games. Obviously I want the new closers to do well. But I'm just saying I think we may be in for a surprise. Closing isn't automatic in many cases.

They should trade him to the Rangers if they can get some good guys in return. Rangers lost Lee; need Greinke.

I love Peavy's attitude as well, but he was a lousy acquisition. He was acquired too late his first year to help and his second year he was average to bad, then got good, then got hurt. Love Peavy the person, but his performance as a Sox ... sucko so far. That said, not to be a Scrooge ... MERRY CHRISTMAS! and GO SOX!

Not just the Twins, but we have to stress beating the entire division, the importance of those games. We can't just be the cool, calm collected White Sox. We have to gear up for divisional games. I'd address it more in spring training. Just stress during the dog days of spring training that guys, we have to beat our divisional rivals. Get up for those games, guys. Take care of yourselves better before those games. Show some pride and win those f***ing games. Specifically the Twins, I hope our guys realize by the Twins' annual faceplant that their team is really a postseason pretender. Put them out of their misery during the regular season.

Not meant to be a flame and I hope I don't get banned for my final-ever comment on Bobby. Bobby naysayers are going to discover there is still life in that arm and he's gonna be a valuable contributor for the Red Sox. He can still pitch. He still has juice on the fastball and he can handle pressure situations and will continue to handle them well. I truly hope our new bullpen corps does a great job, but we are all going to find out nobody is automatic back there. Bobby Jenks is a stud and is not washed up. Good luck Bobby. I will defend your performance as a Sox forever. I personally hope whomever has our best fastball is the new closer.

If the Sox truly need to save money, I'd trade Jackson for prospects to somebody and let Sale start. Then sign Freddy for one mill or somebody of that genre.

I agree with Ranger. I blame the players. But last offseason I was against the Teahen signing so I think people like me who don't like Teahen can blame KW for that awful signing. I'm glad we got a former Twin to shake things up a bit.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 15, 2010 -> 05:31 PM) Why what? Why do I trust in Kenny? Because I love the man. Why was trading for Jake Peavy dumb? Because he has a mammoth contract, a long history of injury, and was injured at the time of acquisition. I think we all knew that the percent chance that that deal paid off was quite low (regardless of what we traded, those pieces could have been used to acquire someone else or we just save the huge Peavy contract). However, Peavy is funny, because as much of a fail as he's been for the White Sox, I still love him. Hopefully he can come back healthy and return to the form we saw with the Padres in his early days, but I'm not holding my breath. Great post. It's excellent on too many counts to even comment on. Both Kenny and Peavy are likeable even though Kenny shoulda never acquired Peavy. Strange, but I agree.

QUOTE (scenario @ Dec 13, 2010 -> 05:53 PM) In what fantasy world did Colby Rasmus become a superstar? I'm always fascinated... - how other team's young players with 'potential' are deified, and - how quickly our view of our own players goes from rockstar to dog s*** It's human nature. People devalue the known and value the unknown. Fans know everything there is to know about guys on the Sox. They don't see guys on other teams play every day. It's always been that way, always will be. Like in college. If you are an observer of one of the bigger programs, you see he fans salivate over the incoming freshmen and transfers and devalue the juniors and seniors who have been there, done that.

QUOTE (since56 @ Dec 14, 2010 -> 12:47 AM) I've watched Buehrle his whole career and numbers can lie. He is not as good as he once was. At least not consistently. It seems as though he has trouble getting the ball over 85mph. I am not saying our beloved Buehrle is worthless just don't expect teams lining up to take his cintract and give us there star players in return. Trading him for no-names would be a pr disaster and cost more in the long run than paying him. I think his numbers haven't been good. My eyes tell me he's still damn good. He's a damn good pitcher and we tend to undervalue our own. Somebody would gladly pay his salary. He's a damn fine pitcher. I'd say he's an great No. 3 starter on a staff and still a good No. 2 starter.

MB for Melky Cabrera and Jeff Francour! Obviously kidding. Can you imaging being a Royals fan?

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Dec 12, 2010 -> 11:53 PM) I love Teahen, as a person. As a player, well, he better improve. He's such a good guy maybe we should all try to give him a clean slate. I know I was his worst critic. Maybe I can pretend he's such a good clubhouse presence he'll have a decent year his second season in Chicago. The problem is his fielding is so bad. I'm not sure it can improve at all.

I'll check and ask my friend what exactly he means. This is not a slam but a serious question. Is Obama our worst president in the last 70 years?
-
I guess we agree to disagree. I can understand it completely and no, I wouldn't freeze my butt off even for 3 hours at a Bears game in January. I'm a little surprised since you were there when Santo was doing his thing you don't understand it more. I'm not a zealot fan, but I kind of think it's very cool when somebody dies and there's this kind of outpouring. I don't think it's creepy at all.

Multiple Sources: Sox actively shopping Quentin
greg775 replied to SoxFan1's topic in Pale Hose Talk
If this means a lot of Mark Teahen and I think it does mean that, then that is simply not good. I mean if CQ is gone, Teahen will play a ton. I think that's a fact, jack. -
QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Dec 10, 2010 -> 04:27 PM) I certainly can't argue with you, because grief is personal, and people deal with it in different ways. However, I didn't mean to imply that folks were losers just for going or wanting to show respect in general. My point was that, imo only, camping out for 8 hours in extremely cold temperatures for someone who likely wouldn't have recognized you or known your name extends the definition of "fan" to "fanatical," and in my mental dictionary, there's a small leap from "fanatical" to "loser." And I just can't imagine any of that happening outside the realm of cubdom. I don't recall anything remotely close to it for Red Kerr, who is the closest, non Cub-related comparative I can think of. And for the record, I thought the people I saw sobbing after the last game at old Comiskey might be a little off, too. You don't get it. Santo was a great Cub player. He was a sideshow as an announcer. A lot of baby boomers remember Santo the player and like it or not, he, Ernie Banks and Billy Williams are a big deal. When many boomers think of Santo, they think of their youth and rightly so. He was a big deal. As far as the final game at Comiskey, I remember my last game in there. I didn't cry, but it also was a big deal to me. It's OK to show respect for memories.

QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Dec 9, 2010 -> 10:52 AM) Thome officially said he wants to play 2 more years. As hard as Thome swings, kudos to him for being able to keep his back healthy all these years.

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Dec 9, 2010 -> 04:31 PM) Santo was a god awful commentator and he didn't add much if anything to the game from what I've gathered listening. However, he was very passionate for his team and that's probably pretty important when you lose year after year. Not trying to rip on Cubs fans for losing either, just saying. Not all Cub fans are idiots who don't understand baseball. A lot of them are smart baseball fans who know Santo wasn't exactly the most talented announcer around, but I'm guessing the love for the team made up for that. I mean, sometimes you have to hear someone go "Oh NOOOOOOOooooooOOOOOOOO!!!" right along with you. Anyway, I hope when it's Hawk and Farmio's time, both of whom are major homers, that the city shows the same kind of support and forgets the Sox/Cubs thing for a little while. For instance, seeing the tribute the Bulls did was really cool. I'm the biggest Sox fan and don't care about the Cubs at all, but there's no comparison between Santo's death and Hawk and Farmer's passing, whenever that happens. Farmer was an average pitcher at best. Hawk is only an announcer in Chicago; he didn't play for our Sox, although he was the GM. Santo was what a nine-time all star for the Cubs? Big difference. Hawk should get a good amount of coverage, way more than Farmer, but neither should rival Santo coverage. On a side note, I was at Harry Caray's at Midway Airport this week (don't recommend the food or service; better have more than an hour to kill to chance it) and there's a big Santo newspaper front page on the wall in the back. It's a whole front page of when the Sox acquired him. It was a BIG DEAL in Chicago when the Sox acquired him considering there was a column, news story and 2 reaction stories all on the front page. Little surprised that was the framed front page was of Santo getting moved to the South Side instead of all the other Santo front pages from his Flub Days they coulda picked.

I have a friend who is in the financial field in Chicago and he thinks it'll be 2 more years before the economy even starts to turn around for the better. I have a question: A.) Do you believe this? And B.) Why isn't the economy a national crisis issue. This issue needs to be ATTACKED as much as the terror issue and all other SERIOUS issues. WTF? People are outta work.

QUOTE (Middle Buffalo @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 04:51 PM) It would be the perfect cover. Take that in the spirit it's intended. My mom is getting her last round of chemo this week. She's 71, goes every three weeks, and she still shows up for work. After her last treatment on a Friday, she worked a double shift the following day(she's a waitress part-time to keep busy), and then one shift on Sunday. And I work with people who call in sick with minor aches and pains for three days at a time. Thanks for sharing. What a lady. If I were you I would email the Trib or Sun Times health writer. She is worth a story. That's f***ing inspirational.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 04:12 PM) I'm sorry that he was getting poor treatment before. I hope the new treatment at UoC works out for him. Stomach cancer is a tough one. Doctors and medical researchers are people, too. People who have dedicated their life to studying various cancers and trying to find treatments and cures for them. People who probably had or will have friends or family who get some form of cancer. As others have said, there's no single cure for cancer because it's not a single disease. It's like asking for a cure for infection--there's many different types, many different pathologies, different treatment options and concerns. Thanks for that post. It made me feel like there are people trying to cure the bastard disease after all.

Crawford to Boston, $142 Million, 7 Years
greg775 replied to Leonard Washington's topic in The Diamond Club
Seven years is too much for any baseball player. He will not have 7 excellent seasons. I bet he has four good seasons and three lousy ones or vice versa. -
66 pages? Somebody please summarize the thread for me. My opinions: • Fair deal. On paper it gives us nice pop with Dunn-Konerko. • Yes, I personally expect Konerko's numbers to decline some. I still think he's going to be a productive hitter for at least 2 of the 3 years of the deal. I don't think he'll whack as many home runs as he did this past season. Hope I'm wrong. I just hope he has the same approach and comfort level at the plate next season as this past season. He really was a joy to watch hit pretty much all year long. • Arizona was dumb for not offering more money. If you are going to go after him, outbid the Sox. • It would be dumb for Sox fans to compare Konerko's every at bat to Derrek Lee's next season. We got Konerko, not Lee, so f*** Lee. • The loss of Putz is not ideal, as now we have just Sergio, Sale and Thornton. Sergio is going to have to step up, or we're f***ed. I see Kenny mentioned Tony Pena, but my opinion is if we're counting on him to do much, we are truly f***ed.

Yeah, just like we have to kinda retain Paulie and Buehrle. Just gotta do it.

How come we always talk about age of players on here and the Yankees don't give a flip about age. They are gonna sign Jeter and Mariano to huge deals and there's a chance their performances could start dipping because of age. I saw somebody concerned about Lexi's age. That to me is kind of nutty.
