  1. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 11, 2010 -> 11:20 PM) It was so predictable, its sad. He was offended at playing for $3 million last year so he sits out and now money isn't a concern. Maybe he has a greater appreciation for how lucky he is to be able to play baseball and make that kind of cabbage. I still think he's Paulie's replacement if Paulie leaves. Funny, he's going to make the major league minimum. Amazing how the pride goes away after getting bored sitting out a season. He's certainly going to be refreshed mentally, that's for sure.

Has it officially been reported he's not coming back? I think we all agree it'll be tough(er) to be a Sox fan this season if he's on the team again. I personally would like to hear we don't want him or Jones back, though Jones at least hit a batch of bombs.
  3. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Nov 11, 2010 -> 05:24 AM) So, when will Oakland trade him? He's one Royal I wouldn't hate acquiring, but he's still nothing to write home 'bout.
  4. What former Sox would you want on the team next season if you could only pick one pitcher and one position player? At their current ability. I would choose Hudson for the staff barely beating out Richard. For the position player, I'd choose Uribe I guess (taking the role of super utility man from Teahan and Omar).
  5. I know nobody cares about my argument and you'll all point to different sabes stats but ... if the AL is so f***ing superior, how did the Giants maul our big bad Rangers in 5 games?? I think the AL-NL thing is overrated. Baseball is baseball folks.
  6. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Nov 8, 2010 -> 04:16 PM) I think we end up with Carlos Peña or Aubrey Huff. I'd put my money on Peña, though. Didn't Pena hit under .200? For some reason I also could see him coming to the Sox.
  7. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 8, 2010 -> 08:41 PM) Which is all we do on this site during the offseason. I actually like that the author here took a different approach - ignore rumors and try to analyze practicalities. Sure its speculation, but it actually added something to the discussion. I liked it, too. It was well done I thought. It obviously was an opinion piece so it was entertaining for an offseason story. I am also a little surprised he dismissed Arizona so quickly. I do think the family situation for a good guy like Paulie eliminates Yankees and Red Sox. He'd be a moron to want to go that far east, being an Arizona boy. I think he'll go to Zona or stay here, but hell, his wife might tell him to take the most money. That's possible too. For 3 years she may tell him she can live anywhere. s***, he and AJ both may go to Texas if they have the cash.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Nov 8, 2010 -> 11:38 PM) Dude, I seriously hate you sometimes. Outside of probably 2-3 1B, there wasn't anyone at that position that had a better year than PK. Vizquel was a f***ing roleplayer who was pimped out by dumbass Hawk as the lone savior for our mid-season turn-around. Now give Omar his due. He played a role. But don't get it twisted. It'll be A LOT easier for Omar to repeat his '10 than PK. And I say this with love, greg. You know me and you are cool. I've proven that. I actually am one who thinks Paulie is not done and can come close to the numbers of this year. I must have written my note poorly. I think he was a stud this entire season. He hit for power, roped balls into the corners and what I love about Paulie, whacked several singles as well when we needed them. I was meaning to bag on the people that think it's all great to sign Omar and don't really care if Paulie goes cause Paulie magically is going to see his numbers drop big time. He's 10 years younger than Omar. Paulie is far from dead. I'm also a fan, on the record, who wouldn't mind Paulie playing even if he dips fairly dramatically offensively in the second year of his next two year deal, which I doubt he will. I like watching him play defense. I don't care what the numbers say, my eyes tell me Paulie is pretty good on D. I love watching him scoop everything. Yeah, he sometimes stumbles a bit as an oaf on plays to his right, but so what? Nobody's perfect.
  9. I'm no doctor, but he prolly should get that "achy" wrist checked out.

QUOTE (Tex @ Nov 7, 2010 -> 09:49 PM) seems like an easy move to make. Versatile bench players with all the intangibles, are not the easiest to come by. Especially someone who seems comfortable in that role. Funny how a lot of us figure Vizquel will be equally productive next season yet most people figure a guy 10 years younger in Paulie is about to hit the brick wall where he suddenly declines. Just.Pay.Paulie.
  11. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Nov 7, 2010 -> 07:12 PM) Keith Law came out with his top 50 Free Agents list. Not surprisingly, Konerko isn't viewed highly in Law's eyes. He ranks Konerko as the 12th best Free Agent, behind the likes of Jake Westbrook, Jorga De La Rosa, Andy Pettite, and a couple other LOL names. About Konerko he describes Konerko as "The biggest time-bomb in this class as a low-defense, old man slugger". He says that whoever signs him will be an overpay based on his name, and says Konerko is very close to "the cliff". Wow. That may be true, but from start to finish, he had a great great season last year. Low defense is unfair. He's not bad. I agree he could regress and maybe drastically but he's worth a two-year deal. Law basically is saying he's a mind reader and Paulie is just too old to offer a nice deal, to. Because nothing about his performance suggested he'll suck next season.
  12. QUOTE (SEALgep @ Nov 7, 2010 -> 01:34 PM) I love PK, but I think it's time to turn the page. You can't discount his leadership abilities, but I feel it's time for a new group to step up, and a new leader to emerge. Maybe even someone with a little more fire... Besides, I feel Guillen is still the ultimate leader for this team. Don't get me wrong, PK has been extremely valuable, and I appreciate all he's done. I just feel this is the time. Like who, Brandon Allen to play first? Wait, he gawn. We don't have anybody unless you want to put Dayan there which may be disastrous on D. If he is refusing to play winter ball, that isn't a good sign right there. I could live with it either way, but Paulie is coming off a monster season and we still didn't really contend for a division title. We got blown away. Losing him in the lineup won't help us catch the Twinks.
  13. QUOTE (sin city sox fan @ Nov 6, 2010 -> 01:20 AM) If Konerko and Martinez sign for virtually the same money and we don't end up with Paulie, I'll be very disappointed in White Sox management. Victor is a good player, but I would take Paulie over him any day of the week. Exactly. That would be very very disappointing. Why the hell would he be worth that kind of money over Paulie? He had 79 RBIs in 538 at bats last year. In 2009 he hd over 100 RBIs with 2 teams which is good. He had 23 homes and 20 last year. He did nothing in 08. He's about to turn 32. He is not worth that kind of money. No way. Or put it this way, if he is worth that kind of money, so is Paulie. You think Paulie will decline; well assume Martinez is going to decline as well.
  14. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Nov 4, 2010 -> 08:54 PM) I'm not saying i want him but John Buck could probably hit 20-25 homers playing half of his games at the Cell. Also, anyone who questions the emotions of this team post-AJ hasn't met Mr. Jake Peavy. Yeah but Peavy won't be very effective if he is a shadow of his former self. Guys have to produce to be emotional leaders. To be fair, he was pretty ordinary to s*** early on this season, then got good, then got hurt. He has much to prove in a White Sox uniform, largely because he's coming off a serious injury.
  15. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Nov 5, 2010 -> 03:56 AM) Does the Marlins' interest in Guillen make him a good manager? I feel like the main reason the Marlins would want Guillen is due to him name and not his managerial skills. What other organizations are lining up for Guillen? Not many because he already has ... a job.
  16. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Nov 4, 2010 -> 08:49 PM) MLBtraderumors is saying the Sox are trying to extend Danks now to a long-term contract. Great, so now we are going to have even less money going forward. I mean, as long as it's no more than $7-8M a year, I'll be content w/ it. Don't worry. Be happy. Signing Danks is a good thing.
  17. QUOTE (since56 @ Nov 4, 2010 -> 10:11 PM) If they are so good then how come one playoff year in the last five? Cause that's baseball. And inexplicably after winning the WS and looking like we'd be a regular playoff participant we of late decided we can't get up for games against teams in our own division. You got to beat Cleveland, KC, Detroit and Minnie and we just don't do it nearly enough. If we get owned by Minnie next year as badly as this year, I would assume Oz and/or Ken will be fired.
  18. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 4, 2010 -> 03:29 PM) The Sox don't have to trade anybody to get a left handed bat considering the amount of left handed bats on the free agent market. I could see Carlos Pena being a guy the Sox target in the free agent market...guarantee him 2/$16 with a $12 mill team option or $2 mill buy out and see if he bites. I do think they have to trade a starter to free up some money, but they don't have to acquire a left handed bat in return. Hell, acquiring a package of minor leaguers wouldn't be the worst thing. When we talk money on here, I don't see how fans throw out 2/16 for Pena and seem appalled AJ might ask for that or Paulie might get 3 years 39 million. What is Teahen making? 5 mill? Edwin 8 mill?
  19. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 4, 2010 -> 02:52 PM) The thing that AJ's going to run into as a major problem is convincing other teams that he won't be a clubhouse cancer. The Sox at least know that they can deal with him personality wise for the most part, but every other team's players and often managers have had him get under their skin already. Plus, they know he has a history of having pitchers and coaches he doesn't get along with (i.e. S.F.) and there were probably a couple incidents in Chicago that filtered out that might make other GM's wary as well (the whole college football on every TV in the locker room thing from 09). I'd expect some team, maybe the Rangers, maybe others, will wind up making AJ an offer, but I really doubt that any team is going to go that aggressively after him. It'll probably be a situation like when he originally signed with the Sox...unless the Sox extend him, he'll be out there until January, some team will give up and realize their catching position stinks, they'll sit down with him repeatedly to make sure that they think they can live with him, and they'll put together an incentive-rich deal of some sort. If we acquire John Buck to replace AJ I think I am going to scream. As far as the above, I don't know. He's been with the White Sox a long time and not been a cancer here. I'd think in the right situation he'll be fine again. s***, maybe he grew up a bit in that regard. Maybe there's a statute of limitations on being a clubhouse cancer. I would just give the job to Castro if he leaves rather than a John Buck, though.
  20. Think the Rangers would want AJ? I wouldn't discount it. It'd be a new challenge for him with decent pitchers to work with. I think if the Rangers were smart they'd go after AJP. Yes his intangibles are important IMO. I wonder if deep down AJ wants to stay or wants that "change of scenery" to fire him up. Didn't thome admit it really helped him this year, wanting to prove he wasn't done?

QUOTE (gatnom @ Nov 4, 2010 -> 01:29 AM) I think it's going to be hard for Ozzie not to give him the Mark Kotsay treatment when Morel (as he seems to be the plan at third) starts struggling. That's what I was thinking. I don't think we want Omar playing 100 or more games. And I do think we overpaid him, don't you? Unless half the salary is going for his coaching ability of our young infielders.
  22. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Nov 3, 2010 -> 08:04 PM) What'd we pay him last year? 500k? I'd offer him up to what we offered Omar actually. He can still play the OF and provides power off the bench. As a 4th OF he still provides value. Don't we have anybody in our organization that can fill that role? If not, we're pretty pathetic an organization. Jones is just another guy.
  23. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 3, 2010 -> 08:12 PM) Well that limits his tradeability then, doesn't it? For all intents and purposes, Mark Buehrle is a league average pitcher who is going to be due $14 million next year. If the White Sox want to trade him, they will either trade him for nothing, or they will take on someone else's bad contract. Well if we can't move him, then I'd deal Edwin. Mark is still a good pitcher to have on the Sox IMO, I'm just saying we need to trade a starter to improve our lineup. If the Sox lose Paulie and AJ and add a couple average bats in return like Buck and LaRoche, we're not going to contend with the postseason chokers (I prefer that name to the Twins), we just won't.
  24. You are probably right. Makes sense he'd at least play a few weeks of winter ball to work on some things like defense and plate discipline. Boras probably nixed it.
  25. QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 2, 2010 -> 02:40 AM) You have to love Bochy getting credit for having Huff bunt in the 7th inning. In reality, the bunt took the bat out of the hands of one of their best hitters and put Burrell in a situation where he had to make contact. Edgar bailed out Bochy though. You don't like the bunt much do you? Do you ever see a situation where the bunt is called for? It's in everybody's playbook and has been used for decade upon decade. The White Sox bunted a lot in 05 and almost swept the entire postseason. How bout just credit Edgar and credit Boche? Boche just won the world series. He's a genius right now leading a franchise that never wins WS to a WS title. The big bad bashers the Rangers scored one run at home in the final 2 WS games. Small ball can be a nice complement to long ball sometimes.
