  1. Why no? The Sox have money. It's not your money. There are no guarantees we are going to win s***. Might as well have a good guy like Paulie signed for three more years at 10-12 million a year. Who cares if he ultimately f***s up. He deserves the cash. It's pretty apparent to me the Sox will always spend enough to be .500ish. They can't risk having crowds fall to 20,000 the entire summer. So pay Paulie. The Sox formula for winning a WS in the future is going to remain the same. Have the pieces in place IF EVERYTHING GOES RIGHT during a season. Career years galore, etc. So fear not. Pay the man. The Sox can afford it. If not, and Jerry sells the team, he's going to get so much money for this team it'll make his head spin.
  2. If you guys ultimately forgive the Sox for the sin of not bringing Thome back, you should go to Soxfest this winter and just hammer Ozzie with Thome questions. It might be cathartic.
  3. Nice answer. Thanks. I asked the question, because there's even a local morning radio show here where the host is like a mini-Limbaugh. I happened to have it on in the car for some reason. It's all conservative. He had a guest from NY who wrote a book on how bad Obama is. This author basically said Obama is not intelligent and on and on. Then I turned on Limbaugh and it was all Obama, all the time. Obama being awful of course. Man, those Bill O'Reilly videos on youtube are awesome when he fights with people like Phil Donahue. Some amazing screaming. And isn't that Glenn Beck guy conservative as well? Like you said though, the media is considered liberal in general. You'd just think they'd have the national talk show voice. With all the liberals out there, you'd think it'd be tough for these shows to get advertising, but no prollem for Limbaugh, et. all.
  4. Just wondering why all the major talk show hosts on radio seem to be conservative? Why is that? Seems we have more Democrats/liberals out there. Why does the conservative radio/TV host thing seem to be the norm?
  5. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 10, 2010 -> 08:00 PM) This great country has had that before, and will have it again. As for what the f*** is going on, there is no simple answer to that. Many things contributed to the recession. But is it unemployment ever going to go down? It's a new era in business today, with the worker really being devalued and not cared about (companies freezing or cutting salaries for the last 2 years, adding furloughs and companies totally shrinking overall staff size ... will they ever hire again?? I've heard all companies have shrunk, even the gold mine law firms.
  6. QUOTE (kwolf68 @ Sep 13, 2010 -> 09:21 PM) Man oh man talk about heart-break. I still can't believe Dybzinksi got thrown out like that with the winning/lead run on its way home. Britt Burns pitched one of the most courageous games I have ever seen...by that point I think his hip was already on the downside and his days of taking a start every 5th were gone, but that guy was absolutely masterful in that game against a great Orioles team. LaRussa had to leave Britt in...Sox had a very marginal pen that year. The Landrum shot in the LF upper deck still haunts me...Yea, Im glad we got the series in 2005, but I loved that 1983 team. Still do...had my favorite player of all time on it (Fisk) and a SICK rotation. Hoyt going in game 5 against Scott McGregor would have completely favored the White Sox. I know a guy who quit his job to go to that Saturday game. Yes he had to work on a Saturday. I just couldn't believe inning after inning that at home we couldn't muster one run. And knowing Hoyt was going Sunday night! Huge disappointment for the team. I didn't even remember LaRussa being the manager it was so long ago.
  7. The Sox obviously thought they were going to win with pitching (not too big an assumption despite the fact the bullpen sucked in 2009) but not defense (Teahen at third, nobody knew Lexi would be this improved at short, Juan was known for a weak arm, CQ somewhat statuesque in right, AJ not getting any younger throwing people out) and speed was supposed to be a strength like the pitching. I still think you can win with pitching and defense, even in the AL, but our pitching wasn't good enough again and our defense sucked early on, thought it turned out to be very solid up the middle with Rios, Becks and Lexi and AJ having a better year throwing wise. For us to win with this formula, the starting staff is going to have to DOMINATE and not be graded about a Bminus or B at the best, which is what they were this year. And the bullpen was a C at best. Not good enough without huge pop in the lineup. As far as Thome, I still consider the argument moot had we acquired a lefty bat like Dunn at the break which I guess he was impossible to get. I'd prefer to go back to the station to station thing next year but it is still going to all boil down to our pitching and defense.
  8. To not be able to win that day game and be able to go to the deciding game at home ... wow. The Dybber f***ed up inexcusably. All we needed was 1 run. Hoyt was unbeatable that year.
  9. If Ankiel could stay healthy, would he be the cheap answer for DH?
  10. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 13, 2010 -> 02:56 PM) Other than the fact that Minnesota took 2 out of 3 vs. the Sox their first 2 trips in this year in April and August, probably nothing. BTW, since Manny Ramirez became a White Sox, I am tied with him in RBI. The Sox need to sweep. 2 out of 3 isn't good enough. True. Even with a sweep it would take a lot to pass them. But if they win one game and are up five? It would take a monumental choke by Minnesota.
  11. QUOTE (since56 @ Sep 13, 2010 -> 12:08 PM) Jerry Dybzinski is still practicing his base runnig. One of the single biggest blunders in White Sox history. If we win that game 1-0 behind Britt Burns' incredible performance, LaMarr Hoyt wins the deciding game and we probably win a WS way before 2005.
  12. Do you guys like or hate The Avett Brothers and Grace Potter and the Nocturnals? Tell me.
  13. QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 10, 2010 -> 09:52 PM) Dude, he won a WS ring in '05 If you guys don't think Garland has remained a good option since he left the Sox I can't help you. He's done fine. Meanwhile we keep losing arms. I happen to admire Hudson, Gio and Clayton Richard and Garland. Our pitching which always is supposed to revolutionize baseball continues to be average.
  14. QUOTE (Cali @ Sep 12, 2010 -> 07:03 AM) They beat up on their division. Plain and simple, they also play lights out at home. They're a very average road team. They are built for the AL Central which is why they rarely make it out of the first round. They play the Yankees like the Sox play the Twins, scared. I would agree 100 percent. You described the Twins. Thome may help them not fear NY.
  15. 2005 was no fluke. We had good baseball players and pitchers who really stepped up when it mattered most. And a manager that defied logic and let the starters finish what they started instead of bringing in relievers cause every team does that.
  16. QUOTE (Gregory Pratt @ Sep 13, 2010 -> 05:34 AM) I'm sure the Sox more than break even every year after seeing those leaked financial documents for other teams. Me too. They must sell a s***load of merchandise. We have great hats and uniforms.
  17. QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Sep 13, 2010 -> 05:52 AM) just checked to see how horrible CQ's defense at right field is He is dead last of all qualified MLB player in terms of UZR and UZR/150, with a UZR/150 of -28.8 Konerko is also in the bottom 10 in UZR/150 with -12.0 In case you were wondering, of the unqualified players, our golden boy Teahan at 3B has a UZR/150 of -24.2, and Kotsay at RF would a whopping -81.0 UZR/150 I'd say we need to fire our fielding coach My eyes tell me Konerko is a damn good first baseman, stats be damned.
  18. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Sep 13, 2010 -> 05:15 AM) What planet are you from? You don't think 8-10 is eons better than a horrific 5-13??? 8-10 is bad, but not abysmal. The Twins have a chance to go 13-5 vs. the Sox.
  19. Still at the break we were in the race. We could have added a suitable bat. We didn't. Thome didn't lead the Twins to any advantage at the break over us. We were in the race. Sox f***ed up by not adding a bat. Paulie, Oz, KW said they didn't need one.
  20. There's no excuse for our pitchers to let Jimmy beat us ... again. Don't we know how to get the big lug out?? He made enough outs in Chicago (to go with so many big hits) but he did make a lot of outs! Cmon Sox 8-10 vs. Minnie would make a statement heading into next season. 5-13 against them will be AWFUL!!!
  21. That's neat he cleared up his drug use. Did he write a book or anything? He was a favorite of mine.
  22. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 12, 2010 -> 10:06 PM) Just think, last year at this time a lot of posters wanted the Sox to pay money to have Paulie play elsewhere. Of course. A lot of posters just recently only want Paulie back if it's under good financial terms. As I recall most were not in favor of 3 years. Off topic, Paulie would be a great hitting coach for big men/sluggers. He hits home runs a lot, but also knows how to spray singles and doubles when needed. What a stud.
  23. QUOTE (chw42 @ Sep 12, 2010 -> 10:12 PM) Trolling is an art. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 13, 2010 -> 12:20 AM) The ignore function is a spectacular thing QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Sep 13, 2010 -> 01:43 AM) You could count last year on one hand how many times Thome managed to hit to the left side and beat the shift when with the Sox. It would take 2 hands just to count the amount of times against the Sox alone. I for one would like to offer a bif f**k you to Mr. Thome for playing out his ass now instead of the last 2 years when we needed him. Mr. clutch hit he sure wasn't. 1. Yeah I'm a troll at 11,000 posts and have been here like 9 years or something. I'm a troll. I've been here a long long time. 2. I don't ignore any poster. I like all points of view in life. 3. Thome was great with the Sox but the game threads brutalized him when he kept hitting into the shift. I remember he'd go to left once in a while and even homer to left center and we'd want more of it. I'll never rip him, loved him and he's certainly getting even with us now. He's beating us like he did in the old days when he killed the Sox as a member of the Tribe for years.
  24. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Sep 12, 2010 -> 10:41 PM) I had checked in and saw we were down 6-0 after one-half inning and hubng around till it was at 6-6. I had a good feeling about the outcome. We should have an interesting series versus Minny. We are still in this thing folks All Minnesota has to do is win one game in the 3 game series and it would take an epic collapse of biblical proportions. The Twins have shown no signs of shakiness or bizareness like we have since the break. It would make absolutely no sense for them to blow the lead. That said I'm in it til the end obviously like every year. Prediction wise: I'd say Minnie will win 2 of the 3 if not all 3. I can dream that we win all 3 and cut it to three. Realistically it'll be 7 when they leave town, but it could be nine IMO.
