President Donald Trump: The Thread
Trump is obviously a rich, elitist jerk basically. But it's 'funny' cause I like to read the CNN headlines on my phone at lunch every day and click on the stories and it's so funny to read how the reporters refer to Trump. I'd say 90 percent of the articles on Trump are negative and/or out to get him impeached yet you can sense the frustration/desperation in the reporters who have yet to make a mark so to speak. Today I was reading an article about Trump's inappropriate speech to the Boy Scouts (I didn't listen to it but I believe everybody who said it was a horrific inappopriate speech cause hey, that does define Trump) and the writer in the third paragraph referred to him as "Trump, the former Celebrity Apprentice host." I mean, what? What's that second reference to the prez all about? At any rate, Trump has had his fun. It's either time to get serious and get him on something bad and get the impeachment going or just figure out a way to get the man to resign. He can't be having much fun. He's a dope, a dolt and despised by most folks in the USA. I mean, Donald you have jumped the shark. Move on, count your money, play some serious golf and let your VEEP do his thing. Or to the media, it's not enough just to act like you hate Donald in your articles, get him on something that will, uh, actually get him impeached and gonzo from DC.

Tim Anderson
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 03:37 AM) Yep if he's struggling as much emotionally as they are implying, then they need to get him help (I mean that in the most caring way possible). It does no one any good if he's incapable of focusing on the field because of the tragedy. I agree. It's a no brainer. You have to be sensitive to what he's going through Get him some help and let him play out this wasted year in the minors near his hometown. He certainly doesn't look like a sure star anymore though he obviously has some tools. No reason to keep him in the bigs when he's in emotional pain. I agree Fathom. Good take IMO.

07/26 GT: Cubs @ Sox game 3, 7:08 PM, Arrieta vs. Shields
This new look White Sox team will be good for about one win a week and that's really it. I wouldn't be surprised if the Sox win 12-15 games the rest of the year, maybe less than that.

07/26 GT: Cubs @ Sox game 3, 7:08 PM, Arrieta vs. Shields
How can 9 innings take this long to play?? Horrific pace.

07/26 GT: Cubs @ Sox game 3, 7:08 PM, Arrieta vs. Shields
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 01:41 AM) Shields had a good first few innings and can't even get an out in the 5th....fire someone involved with the trade I agree. He's undeniably awful. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 02:54 AM) Listen baseball takes as long as it takes The umps are to blame IMO. They won't call a strike a strike. They won't enforce the rules. They don't care. They just want their checks.

Avi Garcia to the DL
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 26, 2017 -> 09:36 PM) Most importantly, how does this affect the Portillos bet? Call the bet off. I said I'd buy anybody on here a portillos beef sandwich when I'm home. Fun.

Avi Garcia to the DL
I hope they shut him down the rest of the year. His batting average has plummetted all because of the injury. He's done nothing of late cept see the .345 drop, drop, drop. Sox brass knows what he can do. No reason to play any more this season until he's 100 PERCENT HEALTHY. Kudos to Avi for a nice season. We'll never know what kinda numbers he might have put up if healthy. I mean if the thumb gets 100 percent better, fine. If not, shut er down please.

Anthony Swarzak to Brewers; Sox receive Ryan Cordell
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 26, 2017 -> 04:31 PM) Sounds like Cordell still has a few more weeks on the shelf. I know and he's got the built in excuse if he stinks the rest of this year -- bad back. I liked the numbers I saw from this guy even though he's old, or at least was intrigued by the numbers so I am moderately excited for him, but it'd probably be better he not get his call up until next season when he's healthy. Let Engel continue to have his day this year.

Melky thread
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 26, 2017 -> 06:29 PM) They just gave it in the Robertson deal by bringing back Clippard. Yeah but I thought they were actually paying Clippard. They took him to balance some of the money disparity, but technically the Sox are paying him and Yankees are paying the other overpaid guys they acquired. I thought generally speaking the Sox have a policy of sorts to not pay players who play for other teams.

QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Jul 26, 2017 -> 03:05 PM) True. I didn't mean it in absolutes, but moreso that I hope we're open to eating a good chunk of his salary IF it improves the return. How often do the Sox actually give salary relief? Isn't that a no no with Jerry as owner? Isn't it very rare Jerry OKs paying players who play for other teams?

Anthony Swarzak to Brewers; Sox receive Ryan Cordell
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 26, 2017 -> 04:09 AM) Just because Rick Hahn made the trade doesn't suddenly mean we all have to think it's wonderful, does it? And yet that is what is expected here. That's what drives me the most crazy and gets me in trouble the most on here. Nobody even agrees with me that the rebuild is wait and see because we are talking bout prospects here. Yes, prospects to me is as important as practice is to Iverson. You gotta wait and see, baby. If the prospects pan out and we win, all hail to Hahn. Put me in the back row of the parade line. If the prospects suck and we continue to suck, guess what, it was a 2 of a rebuild in that case. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 26, 2017 -> 04:22 AM) A f***ing dick, like I said. I've said this before too. The constant personal attacks on Greg are uncalled for. I don't agree with him on anything, but you go after the guy constantly. Now, you've attempted to associate his agreeing with me as some sort of personal insult against me. Stop acting like a f***ing dick. Thank u. I know u don't want to be lumped in with my opinions, but thanx anyway. QUOTE (Tony @ Jul 26, 2017 -> 04:24 AM) But calling me a f***ing dick is called for? Maybe you need some time off. Cmon Tony. Dick is a common word in Chicago, especially the south side. Calling somebody a dick or a dick move is not bad. He thinks you've been rude or condesending in the thread, which just might be true. If he called you on being a dick, cmon, that's nothing. Like I said, the word dick was commonplace where I grew up in mt. greenwood.

Anthony Swarzak to Brewers; Sox receive Ryan Cordell
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 26, 2017 -> 04:05 AM) No doubt the Shields trade was a fireable offense. There are no excuses for it. It showed a horrible lack of scouting acumen for two players. thats way different than this trade. Now that's the old fathom! I like it.

Anthony Swarzak to Brewers; Sox receive Ryan Cordell
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 26, 2017 -> 04:19 AM) From what we've read, all relievers have sketchy track records. You can't have it every which way. Robertson had a fantastic track record and he was worth s*** because he made some money. Kahnle had control, but his control was worthless because relievers are erratic and he will eventually turn into suck, no doubt, anyway. Swarzak has no money committed to him, has been dominant, has outstanding stuff, but is worth nothing because he has no control. These are all horses*** justifications for getting s*** value out of our relievers a week ahead of the deadline. I should probably send you this via pm instead of out here. But what you are saying is this board has a lot of people praising Hahn for EVERY single move he's made when quite frankly the verdict is still out on this rebuild as it is with anything dependent on PROSPECTS. You called them sheep, not me, but ... That said I want the prospects to win as you do since the Sox have gone this route. I feel like shack was fed up with the seemingly 100 percent love of everything Hahn is doing and like me couldn't take it any more thus erupted in this thread. Some of us want PROOF. And my grade of the rebuild hinges on results, baby. Not prospect lists. Though I am hopeful and love the Sox.

Anthony Swarzak to Brewers; Sox receive Ryan Cordell
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 26, 2017 -> 04:00 AM) Bats are worth nothing, relief pitchers are worth nothing, and like 3 SP have been traded. The whole league has gone bats*** crazy about prospects. It a joke. Not me, brother. I am not a prospects guy. I'm also not a sabes guy. And I'm definitley not a Robin or Renteria guy. Or a Buddy Bell guy. Robin was a buffoon. Renteria's bunting drives me crazy and I DO NOT buy the fact he's having them learn how to do it in games that mean nothing. If he were an anti bunt guy he wouldn't be bunting so much.

Anthony Swarzak to Brewers; Sox receive Ryan Cordell
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 26, 2017 -> 02:48 AM) We heard yesterday the likely value was a top 150ish guy or so... We basically got someone closer to top 350-400. But the whole goddamned board wants to keep rationalizing and justifying that guys with good stuff that have eras in the low 2's in a year where we're seeing the most home runs basically EVER are worth NOTHING. Bulls***. I like your style, brother. I didn't know I was a shack fan til tonight. I know I'm an El Rockin fan and a couple others. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 26, 2017 -> 03:19 AM) Stop acting like there is some infinite number of baseball lineups the White Sox need to fill. They have one team. We have an actual mlb organization, you know. We have lots of guys that "can make the major leagues." Do you know that Anthony Swarzak was "in" the major leagues already? And dominating? But we'll keep trading good "actual" major league players for guys that can "make" the major leagues, with "ceilings" that are really high! I love guys who go against the grain. Preach on, shack. You da man IMO. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 26, 2017 -> 03:39 AM) I get bent out of shape because people are sheep. They go on record as saying they expect X return for a player, and then they justify Y * s*** return with a bunch of nonsensical justifications. I may certainly be wrong, but at least I have a mind of my own. Ditto me. I'm not a sheep either. For some reason (my gut feeling which has not won me a lotta money in Vegas) I do like the fact this latest fourth outfielder candidate has hit some home runs in the past few years and is supposed to be fast. I kind of like this type of prospct more than, a Tito Polo type, per se. Hopefully some of these outfielder guys will be good. The board should be a little scared that I'm intrigued by Cordell a bit. I'm usually wrong. Tito will probably be the star since I'm not high on him. This has nothing to do with you, shack. I love your speaking your heart in this thread! It ain't easy being the poster who has the contrary opinion to the masses! I do think we all agree at least with this comment: GO SOX!!

Clippard to Houston for PTBNL or cash
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 25, 2017 -> 08:00 PM) In the Sox current position, looking towards today is the wrong mentality. Be happy if they win, but be happy if they lose too. Losing can actually be a really good thing. You really see the mental capacity and the character of players during losing seasons like this. If guys can't get past it and can't improve, then they aren't good enough to be on the team moving forward. If they can look beyond the losing and continue to improve and play as well as they can, they're worthwhile in the long run. They are going to be bad for at least the next 8 months, and it is not unreasonable to think that they'll be bad in 2019 too. It will be OK. I'm not trying to argue, just thinking out loud. I wonder if incessant losing affects some young guys negatively, like perhaps TA or even a Moncada. Let's say you are a bulldog so to speak and really love competing and getting hits for the greater good of the ol team. The fact your at bats in theory in August and September mean nothing ... could that affect 'some' prospects negatively. In other words, s*** try to hit it out every time since really each at bat means nothing. Probably doesn't matter at all. Each hitter probably wants to get a hit just cause he wants to personally succeed, but when a team is this bad I know it'd be easy to just go take ones hacks rather than maybe work the count, etc., like u might do if the games meant something. Don't take this as a negative post. It's just a thought that occurred to me in reading your post. You were making a good point in that you can see what a player is made of during a losing season. I was just wondering if my scenario could occur as well. A hitter saying, "s*** i might get lucky and hit 3-4 homers tonight if i go up there hacking.' Rather than trying to do the little things like whack a single with a two strike count and nobody on base trying to get a rally going when down 8-0.

Anthony Swarzak to Brewers; Sox receive Ryan Cordell
This Cordell guy will be intriguing to watch if he can clear up the back issues. His stats include some power numbers and he's MLB ready at 25. Like somebody said bring him up when Melky gets traded and give him a month of at bats.

07/25 GT: Sox @ Cubs game 2, 1:20 PM
Poor Avi. Like you guys wrote, .303 now. This game of baseball is unforgiving. Now he appears to be lousy after being an all star earlier. 3 for his last 24 plate appearances. Only 17 hitters in the AL are hitting .300 or above. At 54 RBI, Avi's been in an RBI drought as well. He has 3 RBI in July. Only 3 BB all month. Hitting .239 for the month by far his worst month. I loved it when he was hitting .340. Wonder what's changed. Probably just the game of baseball. It is unforgiving. The marathon of the season ultimately gets almost everybody.

A Swarzak + Melky package to a contender
QUOTE (Tony @ Jul 24, 2017 -> 09:32 PM) Someone will give Melky Cabrera a multi-year contract worth 8 figures. Stop. He's that good? At his age?

07/24 GT: Cubs vs. Sox game 1, 1:20 PM
Great game. Sox certainly came to play ball. Shows what a good starting pitching performance can do and a good close job by Anthony. The stuff in between was great, but in this day and age u ain't winning squat without good starting pitching, good closer and good defense baby! Sox can go enjoy a nice steak dinner now or get drunk, whichever they choose! Nice to beat the Cub in their arena!

2017 Cubs Catch-all thread
What are Cub fans like this season? Do they just assume they will repeat? Now that they have a WS title are they like most fans and are yawning through the regular season assuming this is another eventual WS title team?

A Swarzak + Melky package to a contender
QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Jul 24, 2017 -> 10:21 PM) Anybody else surprised by the general attitude towards Melky's trade value in the media? I'm not suggesting he has a ton of value and should net us a top 100 prospect, but I keep reading that he has pretty much 0 value. Mlbtraderumors had an article about tradeable Of'ers and suggested we'd have to pay all of Melky's contract just to be able to get rid of him. Am I missing something? He's top 14 in OPS among AL Of'ers (and that's including a slow 1st 100 ab's) and isn't THAT bad in the field. I definitely wouldnt call him good in the field, but he's not an absolute butcher in the field that hurts the team either. He's a flat out professional hitter that can give really good AB's to most contenders for the rest of the season in my opinion. Or am I wrong on this? And I'm usually more pesimistic about sox players than most. He's had a good year for him no doubt about it. He'd probably be good to sign on a minimum deal for next season since Sox are still in midst of rebuild. Nobody's going to sign him for real money. Give him MLB veteran minimum and let him patrol left one more year as Sox lose. I now love the Melkster ever since he continued playing after taking that ball in the face, but nobody else is gonna pay him either. What's the MLB minimum anyway? One year, $2 mill contract?

Clippard to Houston for PTBNL or cash
QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Jul 24, 2017 -> 07:05 PM) Time to accept reality, Greg. Winning games at this point does no good. The White Sox are not making the 2017 playoffs. I love the thrill of victory, though, and watching the walk off celebrations and seeing guys like TA or Davidson win games via the walk off or stellar overall play. Also I don't like some of the opponents much such as the Royals, Twins, Cubs.

Clippard to Houston for PTBNL or cash
QUOTE (soxforlife05 @ Jul 24, 2017 -> 11:28 AM) I'd say he's worth his contract if he gets us from the #3/4 pick to the #1 pick. Why are these kind of troll posts acceptable when mine aren't? A post like this is worth nothing except to make me so mad that I want to respond. But I won't take the bait this time. We get it. You want us to lose every game. I want to win every game, so there's a difference of opinion. That's all. p.s. You didn't need Clippard's contract to lose. There are plenty of stiffs in the minors you could bring up to accomplish the same thing as Clippard BTW. Plenty of bodies who will lose you games on the cheap.

A Swarzak + Melky package to a contender
QUOTE (zisk @ Jul 24, 2017 -> 06:48 PM) Melky,Swarzak and Saladino for Jorge Soler. Royals need a bat a reliever and a shortstop. Alcides is really bad at the plate. If Soler does OK in left for the Sox he could help a bit. I'd hate to lose Tyler but his back probably will get worse with age. If you are trading those three to the Royals, get Bubba Starling and call it a day, not Soler. Royals would probably throw in Soler as they desperately want to get rid of him, if you must have Soler for some reason. Saladino is a way better hitter than Soler and Saladino is no good.
