  1. Why are Carmel and Loyola great every year? Seriously? What's their secret? Do they 'recruit' linemen and bus them into school? Or what's alleged as the reason? It can't be just that star kids live in their district can it? I know talent wins. Lawrence High in Kansas about 20 years ago used to win state every year or close to it. When the schools split to two high schools ... they haven't even reached the state finals and usually get knocked out early. It's simple. The talent is split between two schools and the powerhouse is gone. So we have to assume Carmel and Loyola have incredible talent. Where's it coming from?
  2. Has there ever been talk of a.) merging Rice and McAuley to have a large school with plenty of campus space? Or b.) merging Rice and McAuley with Marist which is right down the block and use the Rice/McAuley large campus and sell Marist to a company that builds condos?
  3. And that is why greg is always in favor of the traditional way of having a good team. Draft guys, make some trades, whatever, but never have to gut your whole roster in "tanking." What if Robert was as good a hitter as Witt? What if we had Sale and Crochet on the same staff, on and on. Wonder if the Bears' new QB is football's equivalent of Witt.
  4. To my fellow Rice guys on here: I have a few questions. 1. Is that linebacker Pierce the real deal? Does he have good players around him on defense? 2. What's with the schedule? First of all Phillips went 6-6 last year. Are they any good? If we lose to them we could easily be 0-4 with Marist, Rita and Loyola to follow. Then we beat St. Pats, lose to Mt Carmel and are 1-5. Then we win out over Niles, St. Laurence and Ignatius to go 4-5 and miss playoffs. If we beat Phillips we go 5-4 again. What's with the tough schedule? 3. Who's the QB this year? What year is he and does he have receivers? Any playmakers on offense? 4. What's up with coach Q? Is he beloved? Has he become a Rice institution or is he considered just OK? 5. Has Rice 'recruited' anybody that's highly regarded in ftball or bball for this season? Thank u. p.s. I was assuming the loss to Marist cause isn't their enrollment way higher than Rice?
  5. If you go to a football game do you park at McAuley and walk over? Do you ever have to go all the way to the St. Xavier parking lot across the street from Q of M?
  6. Guys, the Royals talent is not good. Why them and not us?
  7. Two things: Caulfield, geez, how could you give up sports for a girl? At that age? I'd have killed (not really killed) to continue on in sports and not get cut (back then there were too many kids; above average talent got cut regularly). I had to run track and cross country in h.s. cause I got cut from baseball and basketball at Br. Rice which had over 2000 boys I think compared to 500ish now. Cross country was not fun ... case closed.
  8. Well it was the boomers' parents who decided to raise their kids this way. And so they did. What's the name for boomers' parents generation? That generation really liked to drink, too. My dad got pulled over a lot and never got called into court (connections on the south side).
  9. It's almost like u lived in my house CaliSoxFan. Everything u say was my childhood. crazy. Don't forget we had a dog, too, til the parents sent poor Spot "to the farm where he can lead a better life" for running amok too much.
  10. True. I was just thinking that they get at least one automatic win. There's hope of losing both, though, if Texas can take game one. Sox might squeeze out a win. A Sox sweep would be wild.
  11. As the game approaches. ... I bet Pedro Grifol is so happy he doesn't have to write out the lineup card. He can count his money. I'm sure he had a nice settlement. I bet even Ozzie is glad he's not skipper of this bunch. Finally I bet even Hawk is glad he is not announcing tonight. Hey Lip: Was Hawk forced to quit? Peace out.
  12. That coach is probably going to be punched out by the pitcher's dad. Sad story here but very common I'm sure. As far as parents never going to our games or practices back in the day, I thought it was great. And the above mentioned scenario described our household perfectly. Four kids close in age, only dad worked, he never came home or rarely came home, just like the person explained in this thread. None of my teammates' parents ever came to games either. I do remember however when my team made the Mt. Greenwood world series my dad came to Game One as I recall and that was it. And when my grade school played for the city title I think he might have come. But I swear parents didn't ever ask how I did at the plate or on the court. They never asked if we won or lost, etc. Same with my teammates. Nobody cared as we were parent-less which was fine with us. Looking back now you'd think they'd at least wonder if we won or lost and if their kid was doing ok or was an abject failure at sports.
  13. Maybe Jerry will be upset fans are upset and move the team on his own. He probably thinks the fans have no right to be mad, just happy there's a team at 35th and Shields. Sox are benefiting from media not caring about the other team in Chicago. Nobody's yet asked anybody important about possibly contracting teams not trying to win.
  14. Tommy Pham is 3-for-32 over several games for St. Looie. Fedde pitched well today in a victory. Do you think Fedde has 5 years left in him? Is Pham going the Abreu route? Release him soon?
  15. Yeah but who can blame him? Nobody. I can only imagine how bad it is for them to come to work everyday. here's yet another series they've already dropped 3 and may lose all 4 to a team. It's happening over and over. Unprecedented. Those players have to be numb.
  16. I wish they'd get embarassed, examined more nationally. We're in a new era of media that won't 'go there' on many topics. One apparently is going after rich baseball owners cause the Sox should really be mocked, criticized, laughed at nationally pretty much non stop. This badness is almost unprecedented. Remember that one year the Sixers won only 9 games? This reminds me of that and that was pre-tank.
  17. I agree. I can't hate on him too much. His stats are almost turning him into an MLB caliber player albeit a very mediocre one. Somebody said he's hitting .270 over 30 games. Credit to him. I do think he needs some coaching. He swings too hard and would be a terror if he went oppo more same with Sheets.
  18. One of the year's best posts. Sox are so bad it can affect the races by whether you play them a lot or not.
  19. Is this actually true? OMG I knew they still were losing series but WOW. Again, that has to be as bad a stretch of games in baseball history. Think about that. Four wins, 37 losses. Holy cow. Seriously how come nobody wants to talk about contraction like greg?? Team doesn't deserve to continue on. Give us an expansion club.
  20. I liked that his voice was not Wink Martendale-ish and he was calm and he was not a complete homer during loss number 100. Lot of crews would not have mentioned it.
  21. Now that I think of it, Stoney had an entertaining joke about Cleveland's 120 loss season. The reason the Sox should be most embarrassed is there's no help on the horizon. The team's top minor league prospects aren't going to save the franchise from 100 losses anytime soon. And the Sox won't spend money. Seriously there should be talk of contracting the team. If Jerry won't sell (even that wouldn't fix things for 5 years or so minimum) they should force it to move to Vegas or Nashville.
  22. Congrats everybody here who are still Sox fans and the 5000 or so who attended the game today (real attendance). 100 losses before September! My gawd. Sox are on their own plane. p.s. It was free mlb TV game and I watched the last 3 innings. I have been unfair to the announcer Schiffren. He was fine. He did bring up the 100 losses twice and he did speak in a non announcer voice and he did set up Stoney with good questions. I am willing to give him a chance even though I was initially irate at his growl for Robert and stand up southside. He's just looking for a catch phrase. It has to be the worst task in sports to broadcast games of a team this lousy and not get fired by the GM or owner for being negative. I think we all should give him a chance. He did not sound like a dope or total homer in the 3 innings. Go Schiff! You deserve a chance.
  23. Getting swept by Detroit at this stage of the season, with a new manager in tow the last couple weeks, shows how bad this roster is. Detroit is not a good team. Wowsie the Sox are a disgrace. That lineup today ... worse one ever trotted out by a modern big league team?? No hyperbole. Truth baby.
  24. Until the Sox prove something, the bullpen should always be considered a disaster area. Except for closer (this year being the exception with a horrible closer) the Sox bullpen has been a trainwreck for years. It's like they try to acquire inefficient pitchers and pay them good $$.
  25. Lipman ... do you agree the Sox would have SEVERAL WS titles if Dombroski never left? Why did the Sox welcome getting rid of Dombroski and not turning the roster over to him for 30 years or so? Sox have done some bizarre things over the years like letting Harry Caray walk. Yeah, yeah I realize everybody hated Harry (behind his back).
