Yet when the arms are being developed the pitchers throw the max allowed by league rules with no concern for arm building. Got to win at all costs. How bout build those arms up then in MLB let 'em learn to go 7-8 innings?
-
No, let's go back to when a starter can manage an entire game (Buehrle cough cough; Seaver cough cough; Hoyt, Jenkins, Stieb). Starting pitching was artestry not just bringing heat like today, It is even surprising Sox are even giving slowballer Drew Thorpe a chance at starting with the current mindset. I was reading some analytical mumbo jumbo about how the author was surprised we aren't at the point starters are flamethrowers who go 3 innings max, ideally recording 8 outs minimum by K. Go 3 flamethrowers per game three innings each. See if a hitter or two can connect for a HR and that's your 2 hour game. Let's say 3-1 or 4-2 with 3 homers in the 3-1 game and four homers in the 4-2 game.
-
Not false. . I'm talking about starters right now and only starting pitchers. Under the current mindset caused by excessive analytics, starting pitchers age 25 and up have no shot at the Hall. Only stat from a starter of value now and in the future is gonna be Ks vs walks issued. And tons of starters will have a lot of Ks. In the former days, W/L was the first stat to look at for a starter; number of saves for a reliever.
-
Well, that's a huge problem, lol. Because of it being slowpaced and trying to win over people with short attention spans, the league faces some huge issues regarding its future. ... I'm not all for rules changes. The thing with the pitchers, I'd prefer figuring a way for the next generation to return to 8 inning starters without making some dumb rule starters have to go six. Six frankly doesn't satisfy greg. I want eight innings to be common on a good night (with no rule in place) and let the closer close. The more relievers you need to use the worse the game is. Baseball is loaded with incompetent relief pitchers. Finding a way to limit mound usage to 3 pitchers MAX per game would be beneficial. Even better would be starter goes eight on a good night with a Gossage closing it.

Credit this one to the new manager. Sox would have lost tonight under Pedro. All praise to Robert. I just bet yu guys the new manager had a meeting with Robert after taking over and telling him it's Robert time. Maybe Robert does only care about the $$ and mailing it in and connecting for a HR once in a while, but I just bet u. the skipper had a talk with him. If you get a chance to manage in MLB and have an underachiever like Robert with talent, you speak with him if u are smart. Nice win.

Respectfully you are wrong. The Hall of Fame is interesting to fans of all ages. Superstardom is interesting to fans of all ages. From now on we will have no Hall of Famers from the starting pitcher category. Why? Cause the W/L stat is now laughable. in the only stat that matters (K's), TONS of starters will have similar totals. They can go five innings and whiff 10 or so. Big deal. How bout the days when a pitcher could go 23-5 W/L for a season? Remember LaMarr Hoyt flirting with 30 wins? Days long gone by. Please people, comment on the demise of a category of player such as starting pitcher. Is it good for the game to switch from talking about pitcher superstars to all similar mediocres who can whiff 10 over 5 innings? Then take a shower and come back four days later? How bout starters who throw six strong innings, get out of a jam in the sixth, then breeze through the seventh and eighth and give way to a closer in the 9th. Never will happen again. Sad.

NRockway: You tell me about the extinction of the starting pitcher as a player that matters AT ALL and how that is good for the game. Because of analytics, it was decided starters should not face hitters in their third time at the plate in a game. Certainly not a fourth time. So that led to the ridiculous starter who often can't even go long enough to be eligible for a win. W/L record means NOTHING. All that matters are K's and I guess to a certain extent ERA even though the stat mongers don't care 'much' about ERA. Nobody will answer my question about how you feel about no starting pitchers to enter the Hall of Fame in the future. NONE unless there are a few stragglers out there who have a ton of wins. Cause the W/L stat is THE only stat that matters for Hall of Fame inclusion. So also answer me Rockway ... Is the game in a state of crisis when you have made insignificant the role of the starting pitcher?? WIth batting average also a stat 'ruined' by the philosophy of HR/K all that matters, you've got what, 6-8 hitters in each league over .300? Is it good for the game to have no 25-year-old starters and up to ever gain admittance to the Hall? All we will care about from now on is how many K's a pitcher has. And that's not going to be remarkable cause virtually every pitcher who manages to go five innings will have between 8-12 K's. Sickening. Please respond, people. The extinction of the starting pitcher in MLB is akin to dinosaurs leaving the earth. Significant.

That is kind of an interesting topic. Would fans go if the tickets the rest of the season starting now were free? I would say yes some would go only if the parking also was free. 20 bills or whatever they are charging is a good whack to the wallet these days. Considering you probably can get in the park cheap right now off the secondary market collapsing regarding the Sox I'd say you'd also need free parking to agree to go to a game.
-
That's a start. Finally a gesture for the fans. I've always wondered why a team this bad wouldn't simply have a deal buy tickets for two games, get one game free for a total of 3 games. There's no reason a team this bad doesn't have a deal like that. Or buy tickets for two games in April and the first two weeks of May and get two games free during the summer. Free should not be a four letter word to these money grubbing lousy franchises. ... Also have some more food deals. And have buy tickets for two games, parking is free for a third game you buy.

This is a start and it makes sense to me. So all of you folks who think greg is so baseball dumb! ... I've said for a few years now it is disgraceful that the starting pitcher position now is set up in which there will be NO future Hall of Famers, no compelling pitcher outings/stories. Yanking them before going through a lineup a third time, or yanking them after 4-5 innings to me constitutes one of the major reasons baseball has self imploded. Again, you are taking away discussion of what used to be COMPELLING. The starter going 9 or even 10 innings where applicable. The starter's won/loss record being CRUCIAL in discussing a pitcher's success and ultimately his Hall of Fame consideration. 300 wins has long been the standard for automatic Hall inclusion. Now the W/L record means ZERO. Baseball has been very smart to have the pitch clock. Baseball has been dumb to have the new extra innings rule. Baseball has been dumb in deciding it's home run derby. A hitter should strike out or walk with nothing in between. The shift? Disgraceful that players refuse to bunt when even a good Little League coach would order his players to bunt to beat a stupid shift. Folks, give me my due. I am the average fan and starting pitching now means nothing. There are no future Hall of Famers taking the mound under the current system. How about cutting pitchers' workload in Little League, Babe Ruth, American Legion, high school, college. Starters in MLB should throw 120 pitches in that area and go 7 full or 7 1/3 or 7 2/3. -- and for all the new age stat lovers. You tell me how it's healthy for baseball to have wiped off the map the importance of starting pitcher!? When a guy's only going four or five innings he ain't making no Halls of Fame! Bob Gibson, Fergie Jenkins, Joel Horlen, Gary Peters, Nolan Ryan, Steve Stone, LaMarr Hoyt, real starting pitchers now rendered as nothings. Oh sorry, strike out totals are so important now. A good starter will have a minimum of eight in 4-5 innings. Boring baby! Bring back the starting pitcher.

August 14 Game Thread, White Sox vs Yankees
greg775 replied to Heads22's topic in 2024 Season in Review
I do not think that's a very good rotation. Potentially one of the worst in baseball. Why? Martin and Cannon are cannon fodder IMO. Make them relievers. Crochet is great even though some teams have pummeled him. Thorpe verdict is out. Hitters don't fear his heater at all so will he thrive as a junk baller or not? -

Hey whitesox2023 can I sit next to u at a home game this year? I haven't come back for a game in a while. I did stop by the school last year and was amazed to see the baseball field was unchanged from when I tried out for the team many moons ago. I tried to get in the school but it was locked. Give me an honest take on the upcoming season please. Is Rice expected to be good again or are we reverting back to rebuilding mode? Is coach Q beloved by the kids and fans? Is his system good or bad? I think he's from the west coast as I recall. Are the Crusaders young or experienced? What about the QB? Is the league the same as always with Mt. Carmel and Loyola the bullies? Thanks in advance. p.s. Tell your son we are proud of the boys and as always we appreciate their hard work. -
Stone not sure he will be back in 25, season "wearing on him"
greg775 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
AJ would be a disaster cause he'd be like Ozzie in terms of blasting players, etc. Generally when the manager is the story every day it's not a good clubhouse. Sure we'd enjoy AJP assessing blame and calling out these stiffs publicly, but the problem there is most is not the players' fault. They can't help being some of the worst players in the league. And AJP wouldn't be able to call out Jerry and GM and that won't work. Can't blame the players when it's mainly Jerry's fault. ... If you are going to go with "the mouth that roared" as skipper, just bring back Ozzie. He's fine strategy wise except for the Sunday lineups. Of course now and for years to come every lineup is a Sunday lineup in terms of talent for the Sox. -
Sox pretty much didn't do anything? Bad performance all around. Five hits.

Remember the days people actually complained about Abreu's defense?

All we can do as Sox fans is point out the organization's blunders. We're left with that. They gave us this embarrassing record and management has not yet apologized. "Crying?" That's hilarious. I don't forgive this organization for becoming the laughingstock of all sports teams. So we should cry some more about Burger and Jerry and the rest of these sports laughingstocks. Can you believe the Sox have not formally apologized for what is here and to come the next several seasons?
-
Burger woulda been a good DH for 10 years or so. Fielding is unreliable. No range and like TA will boot the routine play occasionally. Love him though. His presence woulda helped this lineup a lot this year. A lot.

I was just gonna say, KC is doomed the rest of the year. The Sox have come along at the right time each time they've played and KC has used the doormat Sox each series to get their season back on track. They are done with the Sox and back to playing bad baseball and will soon be toast. Meanwhile, Minnie is doing what the Sox should have been doing since the 2005 title: dominating the division. Minnie has beaten up the Sox and KC this season and still has a shot at playoffs as a result. Sox have been so bad against the Central historically it's hilarious. But back to KC .. ha ha Royals, no more games against the Sox to get you going again.

Is Baldwin our second baseman of the future? Is he showing enuf?
-
Bad loss. Soto with the big night. Fairly typical Sox offense: five hits.
-
Vaughn and Sheets got four hits vs. the Yankees. I'm happy for them. Vaughn creeping close to .250. No matter how disappointing they've been they deserve credit for hitting tonight. Congrats to them. Sheets went the other way. Gavin ... might consider doing that a lot more. You pelted three shots to left for doubles I believe. It's OK to go the other way and get some multi hit games. Nice win. Yankees got bludgeoned really.

Man. Alex Rios looks like Babe Ruth compared to our current players. If I knew how bad it was going to get I never could have been that hard on Rios. Sox have reached the stage it's hard to remember when the team had any good MLB players. I must have been down on Rios for what he did in 09. His stats were not that bad the other years. These current Sox trash teams have made me forget why I hated certain players in the past who look like all time Sox greats now.

Did anybody play All-Star Baseball as a kid, the game with the player discs? It was one for home run, 9 for strikeout, 7 for a single I think. Anyway the discs came with the game (which you could play alone) but I as a kid found some where you could order discs. I sent away for some discs (no internet back then) and when they arrived in the mail it was an early Christmas. Disks of Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Hack Wilson and all the modern players as well. Pitchers had to hit back then so there were indeed disks of pitchers' too. They were accurate or tried to be as guys like Bob Gibson could hit a little bit and some other guys could never get a hit. This may have been my favorite game as a kid. You could play with friends as well but for some reason it was more fun to play alone. https://www.ebay.com/itm/285971872212?chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-166974-028196-7&mkcid=2&mkscid=101&itemid=285971872212&targetid=2357078962517&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=9023847&poi=&campaignid=20903471692&mkgroupid=161081173195&rlsatarget=pla-2357078962517&abcId=9362635&merchantid=6296724&geoid=9023847&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw5ea1BhC6ARIsAEOG5pxnms8Y-Q19kCq8Raw-15qZ5mxtzCeTeT0NY9oKzhv-0LYP9Zr4hq0aAnp7EALw_wcB

.211 batting average and 40 RBI kind of reeks if anybody's using the old stats. You know what's funny? People that love the old time stats for hitters BA HR RBI SBs get mocked by the advanced-stat people. Yet all the baseball announcers use BA HR RBI SBs, even pitcher wins and losses and ERA during their telecasts. Hilarious. And quite the non sequitir. Did anybody see Bill James, the original Sabes guy write earlier this season that advanced stats have ruined the game? I enjoyed reading that. But to conclude Beni reeks despite his 13 homers or however many he's hit. .211 doesn't cut it.
