QUOTE (Tex @ Oct 24, 2013 -> 09:23 PM) Not an advertisement, a press release announcing their search for a new manager. I thought you would be excited, they are trying to get your man back managing. Did you read the ad? It talks about free parking and $2 dollar beers or whatever. It's ingenious, but it is an ad IMO. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 24, 2013 -> 09:28 PM) I've used hyperbole before, but I think I am serious this time when I say that this is the most ridiculous post I have ever read on this board. It can't be that ridiculous if a human being currently employed, never been in jail or in trouble (knock on wood on all that stuff), in charge of a family, believes it. I am a sane, untroubled person and believe it so how can it be deemed that 'ridiculous?' You don't agree about that team being a well-oiled machine? The defense had to make u proud to be a Sox fan and who was in charge?

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Oct 24, 2013 -> 09:20 PM) Shame on 2k5 for creating this thread. You knew what was gonna happen. The headline on the thread is he's "begging for a job," which I don't think is fair.

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Oct 24, 2013 -> 09:12 PM) Oh Christ. The Joliet Slammers are trying to bring Ozzie in as manager. http://jolietslammers.com/archives/8650?ut...w-field-manager That's kind of a classless way to advertise your ballclub, your park and your prices. Pretty crazy stuff there, using Oz's name like that in the ad.

QUOTE (Tex @ Oct 24, 2013 -> 09:11 PM) Ozzie, meet three time Super Bowl Champion coach Joe Gibbs. After being lured out of retirement, the three time Super Bowl Winning coach Gibbs put together an all star coaching staff, many guys who won the big one and they went 6-10 10-6 5-11 9-7 Then he retired, again. And Gibbs never was a jackass. Never caused fans to boycott games. Etc. Just winning a championship at one point in your career doesn't mean you can replicate the success at will. What makes a great coach? Great players. Great post. The Gibbs return didn't work.

QUOTE (ron883 @ Oct 24, 2013 -> 09:10 PM) strategically, how was ozzie good? please inform me He basically revolutionized big-game baseball, or should have revolutionized it, in his letting the starters do their thing so deep into games the whole way. Aside from that, he engineered a program that allowed his players to believe they could beat all those good AL teams en route to the Big Dance where we took care of a good but not great Houston club. He put a team on the field golden with the glove that amazed me with its efficient, professional, incredible baseball. That kind of a run thru the postseason??? Remarkable. It's belief, baby!!

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Oct 24, 2013 -> 09:09 PM) The Sox could have lost the ALCS had it not been for AJ. And they could have lost the WS had it not been for Konerko, Dye, Jenks, Podsednik, etc... Hey, I thank Ozzie, too, but after the World Series he wasn't nearly as good a manager...and he was pretty damn bad the last year or two. Well you said, "I thank Ozzie, too" and for that I thank YOU. All I want is the recognition that the man gave us something we've not seen before and may never see again: a WS ring. Thank you. p.s. I do thank PK, Dye, Jenks, Pods, AJP as well, etc. But it was Oz at the helm.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 24, 2013 -> 08:51 PM) As a manager, keeping your mouth shut is pretty important. Yep and that's why he's cooked. No more jobs for Ozzie. Hope he's saved his money unless he can keep landing broadcast gigs. Maybe if a close buddy gets a managing job they'll bring him in as 3B coach. Asst coaches don't do much talking to media or they don't last a week. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Oct 24, 2013 -> 08:52 PM) First, you assert that there is value in having won before. You are implying that having won before is evidence that a manager is a good bet to win again. Then, the VERY NEXT THING you do is give an example of a manager who won before and -- despite being really good and having really good teams -- was never able to win again. You cannot be serious. I like Leyland; no disagreement there. I'm just thanking oz for getting it done in the Sox one and only trip to the WS. We could have lost that series and our streak of futility would be looking very very very bad right now. There's no sign in sight we can even win our division again the way we play in divisional games much less get back in the WS. I mean if you had to bet your life savings would you predict we get back in the WS in the next 10 years? Next 20? Odds aren't good as we start over. I'd give anything to have Leyland take over the Sox helm tomorrow. I'd love Leyland as skip and Oz third base or bench coach. Leyland would teach Oz about professionalism and Oz could help Jimmy with the strategy. Oh I can wish ...

QUOTE (knightni @ Oct 24, 2013 -> 07:45 PM) Really? So, if you're a jackass and you win a title, you get a pass? But, if you're a great guy but never win, you're not worth a second glance? Tony Gwynn and Ryne Sandberg are less than Lenny Dykstra and Jose Canseco? I'm talking about as a manager; it's not easy to win the big prize. He's in elite company. His ONLY problem is his big mouth. It's probably not correctible unless there's a clause in his contract that everything he says that 'concerns' management, he'll be fined $100,000. If it's worth 100,000 to Oz to mouth off, so be it, the team would take that cash in a second. Problem is he's not quite THAT good to even mess with it. The Mouth he has will keep him out of baseball. People like me think that's unfortunate.
-
I could list 20 reasons why Ozzie is a good fit to coach again, but you probably don't want to hear them. Don't discount the value of a guy who has won the big prize. As good as Leyland is, he couldn't get a ring with the Tigers though he got one earlier than that. Ron Washington? It's not easy to do. At least when Ozzie got to the big series, the World Series, he took care of business. Had we not won in our one-and-done appearance we'd still be without a WS title since the dark ages with none in sight. Personally I respect the ring and Mr. Mouth has one!!!! No matter what u guys think of him. And he's not begging for a job; he's smart to answer questions pointing out he wants back in.

This may sound blasphemous to some, but Mark is a better pitcher than Q and will have the better career. Q is good and I like him, but Mark is the master. He's been damn amazing.
-
Very sad. I'll resist going on my tirade over this.
-
I think we should start a thread Santiago trade value. I'd rather trade him than Q. Could Santiago get the Sox Lawrie? Straight up? Santiago and Gillaspie for Laurie.
-
QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Oct 24, 2013 -> 12:06 AM) Gillaspie and Lawrie were pretty much the same last year. Conor is 2.5 years older and a LH ,which we need, and is one of the few Sox who works the count well. http://www.baseballamerica.com/minors/sanc...-arizona-video/ Sanchez AFL video ,Jays #3 prospect according to BB America. If we're going to trade Q how about Kendrick and the switch hitting catcher Conger from the Angels for Q and Beckham ? We upgrade 2 positions that way. Hell make it a blockbuster with the Angels give them a choice of Phegley or Flowers and get Bourjos too . I'm all for a blockbuster with the Angels. Makes sense. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Oct 24, 2013 -> 12:47 AM) It's really not lopsided at all. Brett Lawrie isn't good and Sanchez will be fortunate to be as good as Quintana. That's a very compellng post. Never thought of it but you could be right, sir. Food for thought.

White Sox 11th most valuable franchise, $960 million
greg775 replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
And we have fans talking about keeping payroll down??? Spend, spend, spend. We're all being sold a bill of goods. The Sox franchise is a GOLDMINE. Give us a winner, White Sox. Keep spending on players until you get the right combination PLEASE. Addendum: We still have the right to blast the players who fail when given zillions of dollars like Dunn and Pujols, etc. -
Boston will beat these guys. So the AL wins the All Star game and WS in the same year finally. Time to get the AL domination back.
-
QUOTE (scs787 @ Oct 22, 2013 -> 03:52 AM) And who's the 1 big name you're missing there in your post? Paul Konerko. When your #4 hitter bats .226/.290/.310 vs RHP and you're in a league thats VERY RH heavy that's a recipe for disaster....I mean Jeff friggin Keppinger put up a higher slugging% vs RHP and he wasn't even brought in to face RHP. Conor Gilaspie had a slug% .104 points higher than PK vs RHP, Beckham .089 points higher. Guys like Beckham and the 3B platoon are gonna be your 7-8 or 9 hitters where they can be competent. They're not relied upon to be big run producers like Paulie was relied on to be. Yes, Paulie stunk, but Soxtalk is pointing out we have a team full of talent, for the simple reason so many people want these guys to return. So I think it's a fair point to make that if you think we have talent, perhaps Leyland could have done a better job with it and been .500 not a 99 loss team, Paulie notwithstanding.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 22, 2013 -> 12:24 AM) You clearly have access to that information, you used a computer to post this. He's 68. I looked that up while posting. Uh, I can be lazy. What can I say? I thought I'd ask one of my soxtalk friends to post the age for me. QUOTE (scs787 @ Oct 22, 2013 -> 12:35 AM) Can't say I didn't see this post coming. They've dominated the division because they have an owner who spend his money like there's no tomorrow. It's all about talent. Leyland wouldn't have done much better with the talent the Sox had, and conversely a Ventura lead Tigers team would have dominated the division as well. It may all be about talent, but a lot of us happen to think some of the Sox defensive woes are a poor reflection on Robin. I know the Sox talent sucked, but I can't say everyone agrees with you and me on that. I still see posts wanting Beckham to return and wanting the combo of Kepp/Gillaspie to play third. And many want DeAza back and many want Lexi back and Dunn back. Almost everybody agrees our pitching is good. So according to Soxtalk the team does have some 'talent.' Could somebody like Leyland have done 'much better' at the helm of the Sox? Like I said, the only way to shut up all fans is by winning it all. Ozzie accomplished that and for a while was King of Chicago. Ozzie was able to complete the deal unlike Leyland and Ron Washington. But alas too many years passed after that w/out excelling again and fans tired of his mouth. Most fans. I still worship Ozzie so to speak.

QUOTE (Wanne @ Oct 21, 2013 -> 11:55 PM) I have some Tiger fan friends that are ecstatic over this! Said they wish it was about 2 years earlier... They are crazy is what they are. It's why sports figures deserve the big bucks they get. The only way to shut everybody up is to win. Sounds simple, but it is true. The Tigers completely have been dominating the division, but they haven't been able to take it all, so eventually the fans tire of the guy. He's a great manager. I wonder how old he is. Would love for the Sox to get him after next season when Robin is done.

QUOTE (JohnCangelosi @ Oct 20, 2013 -> 04:51 AM) Reading the common fans thoughts is hilarious. I'd say 90% want to bring back MB & AJ no matter what the price See, the few people who accuse me of being a troll should consider what you just wrote. And they should remember your post forever. Maybe greg actually has COMMON, not radical opinions? Is that possible? My takes appear to be that of the 90 percenters.

How many pitches did our starters throw in 05?
-
Recipe for disaster, Detroit!! Too many relievers. It never works. You got to get more out of your starter(s). Leyland fell in the trap; too many relievers used tonight. Say what you want about Ozzie? Our one glorious postseason he went with the starters a LONNNNNNGGGGG time. Thank god he did or we wouldn't have a WS crown. Leyland a big goat.

QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Oct 19, 2013 -> 05:54 AM) Nobody actually goes to the park to see Paul Konerko, do they? I went to Kauffman Stadium this year to see a 99 loss team just to see Konerko hit one last time and he didn't even play. It bummed me out, but not too much cause Sox won.

I just want to know one good reason Salty won't automatically re-up with the Red Sox?
-
QUOTE (ChiSoxFan05 @ Oct 19, 2013 -> 04:10 AM) We can't just screw our team by trading young talent away to make room for a 37 year old who demands to play another year. Sorry Paulie, but goodbye. If Paulie wasn't as slow as a tortoise I'd prefer him coming back over Dunn. Paulie is so slow, however, he might have run himself out of baseball. It's tough to keep a guy that slow afoot on the roster when he's not blasting 30 home runs anymore. I hope Abreu can dig the ball out of the dirt like Paulie could. That's also important to a defense, specially with Gillaspie gunning throws all over the place.
-
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Oct 18, 2013 -> 05:41 PM) If we have this Cuban super star Abreu locked up does it mean Paulie wont ne coming back? Where would PK play other than DH and PT at 1B Where would that leave Dunn? I think it is more likely PK retires and we have Dunn and Abreu sharing DH and 1B. It seems Abreu has a good glove at 1B from what we have been hearing so Dunn stays at DH for the most part. I would like to see PK return as the hitting coach. Think it's possible? He doesn't seem like a guy dying to travel with a team all year as just a coach. That news conference in the dugout made him seem like he really misses his family. He's got the cash to hang with his kids as they grow up.
