  1. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Feb 13, 2012 -> 07:30 PM) The thing is greg went from being a minority to a caricature of himself after Ozzie's firing. And I do really like greg, maybe it's just the fact that my brother is greg in real life that it annoys me. You guys are nuts about the caricature thing. I stand up for Ozzie and all my favorites when they get blasted on here. I rarely if ever bring them up, but yes I respond when my faves are attacked. I do bring up Kenny, Peavy, Rios and Dunn on my own a lot cause they all piss me off at times.
  2. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Feb 12, 2012 -> 10:54 PM) 1-2 sentence authoritative assertions are cool. If only they could be written in Greg-esque style, that's the only thing holding back their true potency. I don't mind the notoriety, but I'm trying to figure out why so many people mention my posts on here. It's either a.) people are curious if I'll ever start agreeing with the majority, which is deemed the correct position on all matters White Sox. or b.) for some reason my posts stand out.
  3. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Feb 12, 2012 -> 09:03 PM) It's reasonable to think that the replacements will be as good if not better than Buehrle, Santos, Pierre, and Quentin. I agree. I know we are relying on six youngsters like somebody posted earlier, but I think your take is correct, Marty.
  4. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Feb 12, 2012 -> 03:50 PM) If you thought they were contenders 2011, they're really not any worse off now. More than likely better as guys like Dunn and Rios will be better and Peavy is coming off a healthy winter after being a year plus removed from surgery. The Sox should be within 5 games of the division lead come Sept. 1st. I don't know about being within five games of the division, but I do think the front office thinks it's a contending team.
  5. QUOTE (Tex @ Feb 9, 2012 -> 09:13 PM) Makes me want to puke. Seeing Mark take the field has been my favorite sign the season has begun. The smile, the quick throw and baseball was back for a new season. It's just not going to be the same. It is truly sickening he's not on the Sox. I had to laugh at Rios and Dunn being ranked last and Peavy a No. 4 starter.
  6. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Feb 11, 2012 -> 05:04 AM) I've been know to write essays before, but no need. 1) See if Beckham, Morel, Viciedo and DeAza are everyday players....they have to be for us to succeed going forward, at least 3/4. 2) Continue exploring trade options for the likes of Floyd, Konerko, Thornton, AJ, Crain and Ohman. If the team totally tanks, you have to give Flowers 3-4 months to see what he can do as the everyday catcher. If he can't do it, you need to replace him from outside the organization via trade or the draft. 3) Play Peavy/Dunn/Rios as much as possible and see what options are out there for salary dumps, particularly with Rios and Peavy. Dunn, if he rebounds, there's a higher likelihood we keep him. 4) Give extended looks to Lillibridge, Escobar, Ozzie Martinez and Tyler Kuhn. Determine if Brent is a Joe McEwing/Jose Oquendo "jack of all trades" type, if you want to move him back and forth from the OF to IF or if he should stick at one position, possibly replacing Beckham or DeAza (you can't bench Rios or Dunn in a year like this, Greg). McPherson and Dan Johnson could figure in as well, but they're basically retreads and roster filler until we can replace them with better talent from within. 5) Decide once and for all if Alexei Ramirez is a franchise cornerstone or valuable trade chip. 6) Shut down Chris Sale when it becomes necessary and audition Molina, Castro, Santiago, Petricka, Axelrod, Rienzo, etc. Anyone who emerges from our High A through AA teams at that position. 7) We have 10-15 NRI's and minor league bullpen prospects in AA/AAA that all need to be looked at carefully. I won't even bother to take the time to name all of them. Pitch well in 2012 and you'll get your shot with the big league club, just like Ehren Wasserman did in 2007. Nice post. I would think Soxtalk will be ablaze this season regarding your No. 6. People will be wanting to shut him down for sure when he hits a certain inning total. I mean if the Sox are turning him into a starter, when does his season end? What if for some reason the Sox are in the race?? Do the Sox still have to eventually shut down a guy completely who may be one of their top 3 starters before all is said and done this season??
  7. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Feb 11, 2012 -> 03:45 AM) Basically, KW has a free pass for at least this year. That could all change if Ventura's completely in over his head and the team starts off 10+ games under .500 in the early months. Then the storyline becomes the fate of Konerko, AJ, Floyd, Crain/Thornton and playing as many younger players as possible to see what we have for 2013, especially at the catching position with Flowers and/or a possible acquisition there. Anything would be better than last year. Maybe the media attention won't be as high with Ozzie's theatrics gone, but in the worst case scenario, we get to see another 25-30% roster turnover and long looks at Molina, Castro, Axelrod and Petricka, along with 3-5 new bullpen arms auditioning. It then starts to look like 2007 (minus the "breakout" year of Josh Fields, unless you count Viciedo as a rookie....and the blahness of Andy Gonzalez/Jerry Owens/Ehren Wasserman), and the clock's REALLY ticking on KW, giving him one more year of cover, probably. Good post. I would like to see one of the great fans on here write a nice essay on the makeup of our team and a.) are we rebuilding? b.) are we built to be a contender? c.) what the hell is the front office vision right now: is it just treading water til we get rid of Peavy/Rios/Dunn contracts or is this team trying to win. You guys disagree with my take on our team still being veteran laden so I'd love to read some of your takes on what the bleep KW is planning for this year and next.
  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 11, 2012 -> 02:58 AM) This team is not built to contend. It's built to get as much out of the guys who Ozzie couldn't deal with as possible. Cutting $25 million in payroll is not loading a team with veterans. i just pointed out all the veterans on the roster and you disagree? How is this team rebuilding. Please point this out to me. With Morel, DeAza, Tank and Beckham, Sale and Reed?? I don't see how reasonable Sox fans consider this a rebuild. And good luck to Robin "dealng" with Rios and Dunn. Yeah it's Ozzie's fault those 2 guys sucked as badly as any players in Sox history.
  9. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 11, 2012 -> 01:19 AM) This year, playing him anyway is te right move. We're not "all in" trying to save the managers job. Last year, we were all in to win the division with the roster, but the manager just admitted he gave 500 pa's to a guy whose swing was screwed on day 1. Balta, not trying to flame, explain to me how this year isn't "all-in" compared to last year. Just because we don't have Mark? The same bodies are here with Sale filling in for Mark. What young guys are we playing to not be all-in?? Many consider Tank an upgrade over CQ. DeAza over Pierre is an upgrade as well.
  10. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 11, 2012 -> 01:21 AM) Because this is a recovery and rebuilding year. I just don't understand how this is a rebuilding year. Our roster is full of veterans. ss-veteran. 1b-veteran. c-veteran. cf-veteran. dh-veteran. so five of nine position players veterans to go with Tank, DeAza, Gordon and Morel. p-Floyd, Danks, Peavy (veterans) with youngster Sale and journeyman type pitcher (Humber, Zach) for No. 5 starter with a veteran bullpen aside from the young closer (Reed). Crain, Thornton and the others are veterans. How is this rebuilding? The young guys who will be playing (Morel, DeAza, Tank, Beckham) of that group there are two superstar prospects. If those 2 develop into superstars I guess we are sort of 'rebuilding' around them and Sale/Reed, if indeed they are also special superstar talents. I don't see how KW would get a free pass though with a 'rebuilding' tag. Too many vets to not be a contender. If this team doesn't contend, it will be on KW fully since Oz is long gone.
  11. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 10, 2012 -> 10:39 PM) Virtually zero chance that happens unless he retires. Why is that? He gets the free pass for 05 that everybody accuses me of giving Ozzie? If Rios, Dunn, Peavy and the team suck again and if our closer sucks after trading Sergio, good luck to KW.
  12. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Feb 11, 2012 -> 01:04 AM) I know KW & Ozzie had their issues, but I would hope a manager could tell his GM, "Listen, this guy hasn't been right since day one. We've tried everything and it just hasn't worked. I'm gonna have to bench him or at least drop him in the order because I don't see it changing anytime soon." Robin will do the same thing Ozzie did. Play him every day and bat him third, fourth or fifth. If Dunn sucks as badly as last year, maybe he'll move down to sixth. He makes one billion zillion dollars a year; he plays every day and bats in the meat of the order.
  13. QUOTE (YASNY @ Feb 10, 2012 -> 10:02 PM) Ozzie was gone because he left the building in about August of last year. The team better play better this year or Kenny will be gone at the end of this season. People who think this is a rebuild are wrong. Too many veterans to be called a rebuild.
  14. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Feb 10, 2012 -> 09:35 AM) Oh for Christ. f***ing. Sakes. No, it's a f***ing stupid hindsight post. Almost everyone in Soxdom LOVED the Dunn signing aside from your father, Whitesoxrandy, and my brother (who was for the E-Jax trade because "Prospects never do anything!"). If by "a lot" you mean ".5% of all Sox fans" then sure, maybe that number comes out to more than 10. That might be considered a lot to someone from Kansas. But stop lauding every damn post that agrees with you as "post of the year." I get that they're more rare then a blue moon or J4L being sober, but just because they spew the same ideology as you does not make them good posts. I f***ing teared up and was sad as hell when Mark when to go join the Oz Show. He was my idol when I would play baseball. I didn't pitch, but I knew he made it because of hardwork so he was my inspiration. Each game I wore a Mark Buehrle #56 shirt underneath my jersey and it's so tattered now that I probably couldn't wear it even if he was still here. And if 3 bad moves are enough to can Kenny, how many would it f***ing take to can Ozzie? Is he also like a Tootsie Pop where the world may never know? Was it playing Rios? Pinch hitting Dunn against lefties? Leaving in Humber or Peavy? Frasor? Benching Morel for performing? Dicking around players in the lineup? Falling in love with mediocre s*** like Randy Williams, DeWayne Wise, and Jerry Owens? Explain those to me Greg. He made the f***ing lineups and no one man is more responsible for this team not making the playoffs in recent years or stunting the growth of players like Morel. Kenny, Dunn, Rios, Peavy, JR, Coop, none of them did as much damage as this one greedy, selfish asshole who had to make them the "Chicago Ozzies" and made bad moves because he was either being spiteful or he was just a terrible f***ing manager. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Feb 10, 2012 -> 09:37 AM) Peavy was on the DL for getting hurt running the bases. I guess he does that often in the AL? Dunn? Most consistent player in baseball until last year. I guess PK was done in '08 because he was slow and aging. Rios was a 2 time all-star and one of the next big things having an average year. We should have dumped AJ a long time ago I guess. I liked your posts. Some counterpoints: Your brother and my dad may be smarter than some think. My dad is gone now, went the week before Christmas (family wanted to bury him in a White Sox shirt; thank God I was home to nix that idea; that was just f***ing stupid, but that's a different story) but there were some people who didn't like the Dunn deal. Your points about Rios in the second post ... Rios was a two-time all-star but you have to admit there were some warning signs that the Jays were desperate to get rid of him. As far as your question ... "And if 3 bad moves are enough to can Kenny, how many would it f***ing take to can Ozzie?" Well, some of you and I violently disagree on this one. I think Ozzie WAS half fired. I know I know. He had the option to come back one more year. But this is big boy business and it was obvious (to me) Jerry had sided with KW on this one and it was well known to Ozzeroo he was gone or at least not wanted. I know we disagree on this and probably shouldn't revisit it. I agree that Ozzie in this current climate needed a change of scenery. But now I'm just left with Kenny and until I get over it (or we win some games) I am of the opinion KW is the remaining devil and I sort of enjoy bashing him. Any more questions? I will answer them directly.
  15. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Feb 10, 2012 -> 02:18 AM) If the Tigers win the WS this year or next, it will have been worth it. Jim Hendry would still have a job if the Cubs had won in '07 or '08. Exactly. It's funny the way Sox fans think the Tigers will regret these signings someday. Though Fielder should have picked a home run haven not a place hard to hit bombs like Detroit.
  16. QUOTE (whitesox901 @ Feb 10, 2012 -> 05:17 AM) Nobody likes bad trades/signings, obviously, but if a deal makes sense at the time its mad then I try to be more lenient. Yeah. But the Peavy deal was really bad timing. The guy was on the DL at the time. Geez. That was dumb. And Dunn. Don't baseball teams do their homework? Obviously the guy was a weight risk and not intent on proving himself in the AL. That leaves Rios. He was known throughout baseball as a dog. And still we acquire him. Bad bad bad. And KW gets a pass??
  17. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Feb 10, 2012 -> 01:16 AM) Honestly, are you Forrest Gump? What do you mean by that? Go Sox!
  18. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Feb 9, 2012 -> 07:40 PM) Why do you type every sentence on it's own line? Is that your calling card? Aside from the insanity contained within, I can always tell a greg775 post visually because of that strange method. I think it's easy to read when long paragraphs are split up.
  19. QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Feb 9, 2012 -> 12:19 PM) There is plenty of disagreeing on this site. But you have a tendency to state the same thing over and over. And that is KW should be out of a job because of Dunn, Peavy, and Rios. You have to be realistic. Dunn looked like a good signing to just about everyone. His collapse could not have been forecasted, not even by Dunn himself. The peavy deal didn't look too bad, either, although there were more people concerned about the deal. But, at the time, the only issue with the guy was an ankle injury...from running the bases. The Rios deal...well that stunk. Even at the time it happened there were plenty of perplexed folks. Taking on his swollen salary and ego, coupled with his tendency to be a shlub...and it worked out about as well as could be expected. In my opinion, if KW should have been fired it would be for his letting Ozzie make an ass of himself and the White Sox time and again. I know you love Ozzie, and I'm sure he's a nice guy who'd be great to have a beer with. But Ozzie started making a lot of bad decisions down the stretch, and it became more and more evident that he was not doing what was asked of him by his boss. And then there's the matter of him quitting. As others have mentioned, KW has made plenty of good deals, too. If you were to make a list of good deals and bad deals, the good list would probably be longer. But we, as most humans, have a tendency to weigh the bad heavier than the good. And I would agree that the bad deal of Rios outweighs the good deals of Danks and Sale. So, if you believe that KW should be gone, fine, go ahead and talk about it. But have a better argument than Rios, Peavy, and Dunn. QUOTE (oldsox @ Feb 9, 2012 -> 03:26 PM) Baloney! No one else ever paid that much for that long to a DH, who was/is overweight, slow, can't play defense. Not to mention the #1 draft choice that we surrendered. When the deal with Dunn was made, there was much more that could go wrong than could go right, and it happened. Defending Kenny on this move is ridiculous. 1.) I like that post a lot, but I just don't understand why Peavy, Rios, Dunn aren't enough reasons to bury Kenny. Having those guys cost me my favorite player in Mark. I will say this. The booing will start on Opening Day this year and The Cell will be a very very negative place to be with all 3 of those guys getting booed big time all year IMO unless they produce. It will be such a negative place to be. 2.) I love that post. Post of the new year. A lot of Sox fans were against the Dunn signing. My dad was furious. Said Dunn would be a bust. I trusted the folks on here who were so excited and figured it'd be nice to have an automatic 40 homer guy to go with Paulie.
  20. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Feb 8, 2012 -> 11:34 PM) Please ban Greg...he's clearly trolling here. The discussion switched back to Kenny so I commented on that. People who think I'm trolling generally want everything to be all rosy on here with nobody disagreeing with them. Why the f*** would a die hard White Sox fan like me troll on a White Sox board? I love the White Sox.
  21. How Kenny has kept his job is beyond me. Dunn.Peavy. Rios. Those are the kind of baseball players who get a guy fired. If Reed fails at closer, he also gave away the Sox only closer candidate for this season. Sergio for nothing. Real wise. Oh I forgot. Ozzie didn't have to play Rios and Dunn so that takes Kenny off the hook. Oz is at fault for playing them.
  22. QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Feb 7, 2012 -> 11:44 PM) I hope that we get him.. Me too.
  23. QUOTE (joeynach @ Feb 7, 2012 -> 04:22 PM) I wasn't really tring to be a di**, but I am just so sick of people, grown men and women, on the other site that I run complaining about not bringing back Mark like some little kid whose player left via Free gency or a trade and they dont understand why...they are just upset the guy on the poster in their room is now gone. But I still thinkin you are looking at the MB sitution in way too much of a bubble. No team has finite resources and retaining Mark takes some of those resources, look at the Red Sox, they have no RF and trade away their SS last week in a salary dump last week so they could stay in budget. Mark was offered salaries of $10, $12, and $14M on the open market, and guess which one he took. But dont forget one of the #1 reasons the Sox had success in 2005 is b/c they did not reseign Magglio Ordonez and they saved themselves the $14M he was supposedely offered by the Sox, he obviously signed with Det for much more. But KW even said that $14M allowed the Sox to fill multiple holes and make the team better as a whole. The $$ was spend on Dye in RF, Iguchi at 2B, and El Duque as the 5th Starter.....and all 3 of those pieces contributedly greatly to a 99 win team and WS title. On the other hand Magglio signed like a 6 Year $110M deal with Detroit, and yeah he had a good 05, 06, 07, but as he approached his mid 30s toward the back end of the deal he was often injuried and unproductive as the Tigers paid him like $18M per. Basically KW made the right decision. Detroit paid Maggs on past performance, KW probably would have loved to resign Maggs on a 3 or 4 Year deal, but again, he knew you dont pay a player based on what they produced in the past, what you expect them to produce in the future. And very rarely does anyone expect 33/34 Year old Free Agents to continue to produce at the levels they have in the past.....the only time its ever happened has been with blatent steriod abuse (Bonds, Clemens, Palmerio, etc). And again dont look at MB in a bubble, look at the White Sox, what if MB's non return for the Sox is the only way KW was able to extend Danks for 5 Years, what if Danks then wins a Cy Young or takes us to the playoffs. What if Chris Sale or Zach Stewart, who take MB's spot in the rotation emerge as absolute studs, posting 5x better numbers than MB. What if one of those guys is then traded for the next Posey, Strasburg, or young rising star, etc etc. What if the Sox are able to spend in the Cespedes sweepstakes, rumored to be as high as $60M, only b/c they saved $50M+ on not retaining Mark. What if Cespedes comes here and is ROY and is the next young rising star. The point is want whats best for the White Sox from 2012 and beyond, not whats best for yourself as a fan, whats most comfortable for you, not whats easiest for your kids to recognize, not whats continous....just whats best. And IMO and most on this board, if there is even a glimmer of hope that any of those situations I mentioned above come true for the Sox, then its 110% worth the risk of not re-signed MB. And your Jamie Moyer comp though...bleh. Yeah he pitched into his late 30s and 40s but no one was bending over backwards to hand with guy near $15M per year. The highest salary he ever made was $8M in 2005. The Mariners soon dumped him after that, he spend like 4 season with Philly making around $6M a year to produce ERAs of 5.01, 3.71, 4.94, and 4.84. While his K rate declined from 6.01 in 2007 to 5.08 in 2010. I really dont think thats a model pitcher you want to match the Marlins 4 Year $58M offer for, I wouldnt even offer half that for those numbers no matter what the pitchers name is. Nice post.
  24. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Feb 7, 2012 -> 05:29 AM) About as well as Juan Pierre. Juan Pierre arguably had a decent season last year.
  25. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Feb 7, 2012 -> 04:13 AM) Because you lack the basic baseball knowledge or human logic to do it yourself? I thought I listed some good reasons in disagreeing with his post. He said I was childlike in my love for Mark. I say I wanted the Sox to pay Mark not for what he's done but future contributions. You don't think he can have a Moyer-like end to his career? year after year of tons of innings?? I think Mark will stick around and be mighty valuable into his 40s (if he wants to).
