  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 24, 2015 -> 03:45 PM) The idea that 30,000+ people die in the U.S. every year from guns and this is ok and we should do nothing about it seems unbelievably perverse to me. Over the past 30 years, we've made cars safer and cut the casualty rate per year in auto deaths by 1/2, while the gun death rate has stayed basically constant. In 2015, it's likely that more Americans will die from guns than from auto accidents. Doing nothing about this problem seems like an incredibly perverse perspective. You don't like guns. That's fine, you don't have to. But you are completely irrational about the idea of guns. You ignore other things that don't fit into your agenda on them and pretend everything is fixed by banning them. Heroin, meth, crack, cocaine are all illegal yet amazingly people still die from them. Alcohol is legal and abused by many people. If alcohol wasn't so widely accepted or was illegal there would be fewer alcohol related events such as auto deaths or violent crimes. You like to pretend that there is nothing similar but they are very similar. Most people are responsible yet the small minority is driving your opinion to the ultimate extreme on the issue. Hypothetically, even a 100% ban on guns you can not truly believe would fix all the gun related problems. If people want to do something they will find a way to do it. Timothy McVeigh carried out the OKC bombings with fertilizer. Should that be illegal too?
  2. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 24, 2015 -> 02:40 PM) One of those things that kills a lot of people is legal. One of them is not. Both are incredibly irresponsible and lead to huge numbers of dead people. "If we ban drunk driving, only the criminals will drive drunk!". I know. It's very sad the number of lives that have been lost because of alcohol. It's morally reprehensible that bars are allowed to stay open.
  3. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jul 24, 2015 -> 02:05 PM) This has Peavy deal all over it. One center piece, and 3 lottery tickets. I hope this wasn't meant in a negative way. I'd hope to get more than that but that was not a bad return.
  4. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 24, 2015 -> 01:15 PM) I'm ok with making owning a gun at home 100% as legal as driving under the influence. Great. You missed (ignored) the point completely however.
  5. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 24, 2015 -> 12:48 PM) The most likely violent use of firearms is in suicide. The only way to prevent that is to get rid of them completely. Thanks for your support. The most likely cause of someone driving under the influence of something is alcohol. The only way to prevent that is to get rid of alcohol. Thanks for your support. Also, the second most common form of suicide is medications. The only way to prevent that is to stop selling any medications without a prescription. Thanks for your support there too!
  6. NFL suspended Chiefs #1 CB 3 games for his DUI plea. SO for comparison, DUI = 3 games, beating the crap out of your significant other = 4 games
  7. QUOTE (oldsox @ Jul 24, 2015 -> 07:46 AM) Q is headed South IMO. Just look at his record. He is a mediocre big league starter, which is why he won't get much in a trade. Rodon still walks too many, too often behind in the count....... Quintana is the most underappreciated and underrated SP in baseball. He would be the best pitcher on maybe a third of the teams in the league. Using his W-L record to come up with the idea that he is on the decline (as a 4 year vet, at age 26) is one of the most ridiculous things I've heard on this site.
  8. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 11:08 AM) Left-liberals generally have no love for Cuomo. eta: see his feud with De Blasio, for example, who's definitely to Cuomo's left. Except they (read: NYC) keep voting for him. Cuomo lost like 45-50 counties last election and only won around 10. Of those 10 however, were NYC and the NYC metro area, which are overwhelmingly liberal
  9. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 10:35 AM) Has anyone ever used Rosetta Stone to learn a second language? Curious if it is a good way to learn. I'm pretty sure Lostfan recommended it a few years back
  10. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 08:24 AM) Refs may have been helping Mexico, but it didn't take any help from the refs to get the US out. That was pretty pathetic. I still can't figure out what Beckerman does for this team, and there seems to be a serious lack of quality defenders. And yeah, Guzan is no Tim Howard. I remember saying during the World Cup that Howard was the most irreplaceable player on the team and getting told it wasn't true because Guzan was almost as good. Nope. Well that call on Brad Guzan that led to the second goal was pretty horse s***. That happens all of the time and is never, ever called. It's the equivalent of a 3-2 chest high pitch being called strike 3 or an NBA player called for ever so slightly palming the ball in the last minute of a game. Correct call? Yes. But it is one you never see made. Let alone by a ref not even that close to the play. That said, thank god Timmy is coming back, Guzan was terrible. And Beckerman brings nothing to the team. Everyone except Klinsmann knew he'd struggle against Jamaica's speed. Really poor from the US. Of course, they're probably still around if Johannsson buries that wide open header from 6 yards out instead of skying it.
  11. New York State wage board yesterday approved a $15 minimum wage hike to workers in the fast food industry because New York State has law makers who have no idea what they are doing. It's fun living here.
  12. I agree. Panama has every right to be livid as hell. That was not a red card. That's a yellow all day long. The Vela elbow (which was correctly called a yellow) has more of a case to be a red than the Torres card. Mexico gifted two straight wins with putrid PK calls. They even appeared to be offsides on the play leading up to the penalty called in ET. It's just ridiculous how CONCACAF can continually employ so many below par referees. Mark Geiger had zero clue what he was doing out there last night. Hopefully Jamaica wins on Sunday but you just know CONCACAF is going to do something to make sure they get that USA-Mexico Confed Cup Playoff Game. $$$$$$$$$
  13. QUOTE (LDF @ Jul 20, 2015 -> 09:41 AM) i hope you can give me some latitude here and don't look upon what i am about to write as being a jerk. this is the problem in general. if one just looks at the stats and use that as the end of all discussion as a final piece of a discussion, then that is a mistake. however in this state of development, maybe this is the perfect time to say, he finally got it. so which is it?? people who are way smarter than i will need to figure this out, and i guess that would be employed in the sox org. I doubt he "just figured something out", but I guess you never know. I was just pointing out that he seems like he's been on a tear lately.
  14. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 19, 2015 -> 10:22 PM) Mexico just got a very generous penalty call at the end of extra time to win. Saying it was generous is being generous. Peralta should have been red carded 5 minutes earlier and the play in question was a blatant dive. Absolute horse s*** of a call. Mexico's joke of finishing in that game was rewarded by incompetent CONCACAF refereeing.
  15. Kennyn Walker's had quite the last 10-12 games or so. He must have raised his BA 50-60 points. He still appears to be a bust but it seems like he's had multiple hits almost every game the past couple weeks.
  16. I'm glad it appears they're giving Saladino a real look here. 4 games, 4 starts
  17. Yeah I saw that article earlier this year. The White Sox turned down an offer to purchase him.
  18. Montas was listed as the sleeper on ESPN's "All-Fantasy Team 2019". (Rodon was a starter and Carson Fullmer was one of the closers)
  19. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 17, 2015 -> 09:11 AM) And a 4+ ERA with a 1.63 WHIP for the whole season in AA. Strikeouts are modest as well. He's the youngest pitcher in the league. I'm encouraged by what he's shown so far.
  20. Interesting seeing 3 former Sox pitchers in that game
  21. Jamaica, Haiti and T&T have all looked pretty decent actually
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 15, 2015 -> 03:49 PM) So is Montas being called up as a free audition to replace Samardjiza soon? #conspiracy No.
  23. So Dez and Demariyus get the exact same deal essentially
  24. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jul 8, 2015 -> 01:32 PM) I'm sure at some point people who have run out of other things to complain about will start complaining, but "Blackhawk" has never been a derisive term the way "Redskin" has, so I don't see the complaining generating any sort of similar results. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jul 14, 2015 -> 12:27 PM) This is kind of why I hate group stages in tournaments--you win your first two games and you have your spot locked up in the next round. You're playing to win the tournament so you do the right thing and rest Dempsey the first half and try a couple guys in new spots. Then you end up with a draw instead of a win which costs you world ranking points. I was thinking of this lineup for the knockout round: Zardes Johannsson Dempsey Zusi Bradley Bedoya Johnson Gonzalez Evans(Brooks after suspension) Yedlin I like that lineup. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 14, 2015 -> 12:30 PM) I have a feeling Klinsmann will play Dempsey up top and Bradley as a CAM. Jozy is out for the tournament. Jordan Morris just got surgery and Bobby Wood isn't on the provisional roster. Somebody's gonna have to come up, but I doubt they'll see the field much. Was Agudelo on the provisional? He could add some speed up top as a sub. Also hearing that DMB might get brought in to play LB. That would allow Fabian Johnson to play a midfield wing position where I think he could very dangerous.
  25. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 13, 2015 -> 11:39 PM) Watched the second half. The US had some good chances, but only converted one. Oh well, we didn't need a win. Ref was absolute s*** though. Bedoya should have had a penalty and there were a lot of 50/50 calls that didn't go the USMNT's way in the second half. Guzan was awesome at the end of the game. This was one of the poorest officiated games in seen in a real long time. The ref was clueless and let the US get demolished all night long, rarely calling fouls. Bedoya was just outside of the box, but it was still just about the most obvious foul ever and to me was also an obvious DOGSO and should have been a straight red. One of the worst missed calls I've ever seen. CONCACAF officiating at it's finest. USA again played fairly poorly. Very uninspiring group in the back. Johansson played well again though. I'd like to see him get some more run up top. Bedoya is our best MF not named Michael Bradley. He needs to be on the wing every time he's available.
