  1. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 22, 2013 -> 10:09 PM) Unless Phegley's defense is really that bad that the coaching staff is worried about the effect it will have on the pitching staff. Maybe they see him more as a 1B/DH candidate. Hard to say. If they thought it was the right move, they'd pull the plug on Flowers and Gimenez. That they haven't yet shows there are some serious organizational questions about Phegley's defense. If the organization is currently worried about the amount of runs the pitching staff could be giving up, the team is beyond f***ed. Furthermore, I've seen nothing to prove or disprove that the catcher's calling of the game has any noticeable impact on the amount of overall runs scored. I'd imagine pitch calling lags far, far behind the pitcher himself and the defense behind him, in that order.
  2. I admittedly find it incredible that the Sox continue to trot out one of the worst catchers in all of baseball when the catcher in AAA has an OPS of like 1.050. I'd understand if the rest of the offense was setting the world on fire...
  3. This is stupid. Baseball is a business which is monopolistic because the government exempts it from antitrust laws . All of these examples are in a completely different universe when it comes to the economics in which they operate.
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 21, 2013 -> 06:51 AM) Baseball will NEVER approve Mark Cuban. Eh, I wouldn't be surprised. If Loria can somehow own the Marlins, Cuban can own whatever team he wants.
  5. QUOTE (fathom @ May 11, 2013 -> 03:56 PM) The Brian Roberts technique And go figure the advice came from Roberts' dad. Any time you can copy the techniques of a base stealer with an 80% success rate, do it.
  6. QUOTE (chisoxt @ May 12, 2013 -> 05:01 AM) Strongly disagree. Williams' approach was totally unsustainable. At some point, you are going to run out of prospects to trade and pick up veteran players with awful contracts. If you have the financial resources and can buy your way out of trouble like Boston or New York, that's fine, but obviously the sox are not. do not think for one minute that Kenny didn't realized that last summer when he decided to run away like a scared child and step down leaving Hahn to clean up his mess. +10000000000000000000000
  7. QUOTE (fathom @ May 11, 2013 -> 11:38 AM) I just have a hard time seeing them draft a high school pitcher high in the draft after what Hawk and Stoney say every year. More often than not, I'd agree with you. However, I do believe the Sox would choose a HS pitcher if he was highly valued, and because of the new spending limits. Before the new rules, I would have given it a 0% chance. Now? 5% or so. Rare but not out of the realm of possibility.
  8. QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ May 11, 2013 -> 07:09 AM) I'd love for Stanek to fall to 17, formerly the top talent of this class, goes for Manaea as well, I feel that if they both fall to 17 (unlikely), Chicago takes Manaea. Manaea is a Boras client. I'd be really, really surprised if the Sox took him.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 9, 2013 -> 09:58 AM) The Sox don't pick HS pitchers. If this was two years ago, I'd agree with you. However, with the new draft rules regarding the amount of money a team can spend, the Sox seem to be fully invested in spending more on the draft. And if the right player falls, I'd think the Sox would pull the trigger.
  10. QUOTE (Lillian @ May 11, 2013 -> 05:40 AM) 10 stolen bases in the last 3 games!!!!! I read where he is employing an unusual technique. He walks toward second, and just keeps going. It gives him momentum. I can't seem to find the article, but it was interesting. At any rate, he is still experimenting, but it seems to be working. You think? Wow. Here is the article: http://www.milb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=2...;vkey=news_milb Hawk has lauded this technique numerous times over the years. Glad to see Johnson, who was highly regarded before his last college season, so successful right now.
  11. QUOTE (SoxAce @ May 9, 2013 -> 05:58 AM) I'll chill with the Phegley love until he has more at bats. Last season he started off hot too (in fact batted .352 in same number of games right now with a very high OPS) and then dramatically cooled down. He is a notorious quick starter. Has been even since his college days. I will say the power is very encouraging though. Around this time last season, he only had 1 homer. I agree with this. If by the end of May Flowers is still batting below .200 and Phegley has an OPS over 1.000 , then you probably make the switch.
  12. QUOTE (daggins @ May 8, 2013 -> 09:34 PM) The problem is that, by all accounts i've read, Phegley is barely a catcher. You haven't read many accounts then. "Defensively, Phegley has a very strong and accurate throwing arm. His arm strength is probably his best and most advanced tool. Last season at Triple-A, he threw out 46 percent of would-be basestealers, an extremely high number. Phegley's defense earned him a Rawlings Gold Glove Award. When I saw him play, he was a bit stiff in his overall movements, but he blocked balls in the dirt and his overall mechanics were solid. So far this season, Phegley has thrown out 56 percent of would-be basestealers." http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/news/artic...ws&c_id=cws
  13. QUOTE (fathom @ May 8, 2013 -> 06:12 PM) Another Phegley homer tonight. And another hit on top of it. You'd have to imagine that time is running awfully short for Flowers right now.
  14. If anyone's curious, yes Hawkins is already retweeting about how he hit a HR.
  15. QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 22, 2013 -> 09:33 PM) Do you think Ventura had any clue that Cabrera is better against LHP than RHP over the course of his career? hahahahahahahahaha
  16. QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 22, 2013 -> 06:38 PM) Did you see the video I posted of his home run from milb.com last week? I can't see how he ever hits anything on the ground with those mechanics. Thought the exact same thing. He has no chance with anything down and away.
  17. Hawkins is a complete disaster right now.
  18. NOOO! f*** f*** f*** f*** f*** f*** f*** f***
  19. QUOTE (striker @ Dec 24, 2012 -> 09:36 AM) You replying to my xbox trade was not a waste at all. Multitasking at work and did a ten second reply. You spent a good amount of time dreaming up some half brained scenario that probably wouldn't even happen in a roto league.
  20. None of those trades will happen. Everyone doing these Xbox trades are just wasting their own time.
