QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 10, 2015 -> 03:44 PM) A lot of people who know the history of the man actually didn't quite like how they portrayed him, they supposedly went overboard on the "awkward genius" level with Turing but most people seem to suggest that he was a much more sociable person than portrayed. i read for hours yesterday on him. i remember him and the Turing machine, and how he was the most important part of the unknown reasons the allies won the war. but the movie took many liberties, as all movies do. i needed to know more si i did my researched. and wow, how he help in many ways. like i said how he helped the US and his aid in helping to breaking the Japanese enigma machine. in the ending of how some are saying in his death or was it murder or something else.
  2. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 10, 2015 -> 05:36 PM) Crud, didn't paste the correct link but it was available at the 2nd. And the fact that you're LOLing is equally refusing to look at data on the grounds that they don't fit your context. nice link. i do not how you got to this site, but it is going to be nice reading. many thanks.
  3. grouping of people are wrong. islamic radicals who do wrong are the point here. not religion and the way some are taking it and spinning it for a specific purpose. so how do 1 group of law enforcement can deal with this terrorist sect within the islam religion?
  4. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jan 10, 2015 -> 04:06 PM) I feel this way about ALL organized religion. At some point in time, whether in the past, present or future, some piece of those religions will commit terrible acts in the name of their god. in the past many religion have used their so called religious belief to justify their actions. but i hope and do know in this day of age, they have been educated and have learned form their terrible actions. islamic radicals are a whole different group there is no logic, no middle point with them.
  5. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jan 10, 2015 -> 03:34 PM) Even though he is waiting, I think there is a chance he signs a 1 year deal. He'll probably wait until February to sign unless teams start getting desperate early. exactly and will the sox be interested and be damn with the salary restrictions that JR is setting up.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 10, 2015 -> 06:39 AM) Benedict Cumberbatch. Kiera Knightley. Brilliant actor. Right now, I'd say it's going to come down to the pr spin war between MLK/Selma and this film for the Oscar. The Imitation Game glosses over Alan Turing's homosexuality and shameful demise which was just recently rectified sixty years too late by the British government. MLK does the same with his indiscretions to focus primarily on the historical achievements. Dr. Turing should be accorded a position as one of the five most important figures of the 20th century but he's barely a footnote in some textbooks. Toss-up. I'll go Selma Better overall film. i know, i was leaving a lot out of what i was writing. the film only skim over what he did to help. no mention of coming to America to help break >>> and other things he also help in breaking other codes. there were several other gays working in that group. the there was a memtion of a person who also was part of the Cambridge 5, the biggest group of spies. lots of great stuff.
  7. i am wondering if, Scherzer still doesn't sign, and his agent will go the 1 yr rt, would the sox sign him for that 1 yr???
  8. QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Jan 10, 2015 -> 03:16 PM) No surprise by the cubs predictions since they have always been media darlings anyway. Besides, I like the idea of getting their fans hopes up just to have those hopes come crashing down. I give them credit for taking many steps in the right direction but until those youngsters show they can produce at the big league level, they have their hands full with teams like St.Louis, Milwaukee, Pitt and even Cinci. Cubs still need a better rotation too. As for the Tiger, I think their reign is over. IMO, the Sox or Indians win the ALC in 2015. even if Det does resign Scherzer, i look at the batting and the sox have them there. but don't get me wrong, if they do resign Scherzer, this division is going to be the toughest. i bet alot of tv time will be given.
  9. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 10, 2015 -> 07:58 AM) Man, I love this place. and it continues to get better.
  10. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jan 10, 2015 -> 02:36 PM) Anyone picking the Cubs to win the World Series next year is a joke and should lose all credibility as a journalist or sports writer. i hate to break up the enjoyment of betting against the sCrubs fans, but wait until Scherzer and Shields sign. but the sox batting lineup sure looks tough.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 8, 2015 -> 11:05 AM) I haven't seen The Imitation Game yet either, that would PROBABLY go into the Top 10 from everything I've read. i just saw Imitation Game. i really like it. it is a docu type of a movie. the problem i am having with it, i can't think if the main male actor was over acting or not. i can't think b/c i like the move that much. the female main lead was great in this movie. for me it is a 5 out of 5 type of movie.
  12. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jan 9, 2015 -> 06:46 PM) I think my Brian Anderson comparison is the true one. Wasn't Jim Landis a damn good hitter/player? I don't know about Viciedo being dumb. That's a new one. It's pretty annoying that he's not more selective at the plate. When he connects he hits them so hard and far, but he rarely connects. with ref to DV, it isn't that he is dumb, it is he will not listen to anyone who will try to coach him. esp on his swing. in the beginning he did, then he stop.
  13. QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jan 9, 2015 -> 02:41 PM) 2309 H, 414 2B, 360 HRs, 1448 RBIs, 1316 BBs and a .267/.362/.444/.806 slash line to go along with 69.5 fWAR. That is a borderline HOF career when you add in the multiple Gold Gloves. I'm not saying that Robin Ventura should be in the HOF or that he would be if he wasn't injured, I'm just saying he is a lot closer than you are giving him credit for. At his peak he was better than Jim Rice, Andre Dawson, Paul Molitor and Tony Gwynn and was tied with Derek Jeter and Roberto Alomar. Yet those guys all have, or will have, plaques in Cooperstown while Robin Ventura fell off the ballot on the first try and is not remembered by most for just how great of a player he was. Not that it matters to his MLB career, but many consider him to be one of the best, if not the best, college players of all time also. a very nice break down and i can see your hard work. very nice.
  14. QUOTE (skobabe8 @ Jan 9, 2015 -> 01:08 PM) Thanks! I've been a member of another Sox site but looking for something new. Happy to be here! a lot of the earlier member here were members of another sox site. either way, welcome to the best and really look at future sox. a lot of great info.
  15. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 9, 2015 -> 01:48 PM) Supposedly french police have these two guys cornered in a business in Eastern Paris. A communication line has been opened and they expressed their desire to die as martyrs there it is a couple of screwed up people with screwed up ideas, hurting a lot of people including there own. well let them kill themselves, or take them out.
  16. QUOTE (Lemon_44 @ Jan 9, 2015 -> 12:19 PM) Didn't the Sox expose Jordan a couple years ago to every other team and nobody bit? At that point there was still a question as to whether he could hit MLB pitching. Now there is no question, he can't. That should tell you his value. at some time during a season, esp when the sox are not winning, a majority of players gets expose to the waiver list. just to see if someone will jump and maybe work out a trade. that is how the sox got Rios. so i am sure, by this, he prob did get expose in the waiver list. now there are some players that may never get expose b/c of their importance to the team.
  17. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 9, 2015 -> 12:50 AM) Where do you draw the line? Every time a terrorist tells you he is offended by something then you refuse to acknowledge it? that is my point in a earlier post. i didn't have your way with words to explain my thought process. very good. so let me continue, this act was just senseless and all it does, will do is to continue to hate on the Muslims. this was a act of several misfits who thinks they are doing Allah work.
  18. 1) White Sox 2015 2) White sox 2005 3) White Sox 1977 tie 1983 Never play for: 1) Cubs 2) Yankees tie Cubs 3) Detroit
  19. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 8, 2015 -> 02:45 PM) If you want to see how Avisail Garcia, Carlos Sanchez and a handful of minor leaguers did in Venezuela this winter, we've got you covered here. again, thanks for the extra things you do for getting the info to us, the fans.
  20. QUOTE (Douglas Rome @ Jan 9, 2015 -> 11:16 AM) for some reason when I think of Jordan Danks, I think of Jimmy Landis. About the same build. Jimmy was the better hitter but not by much. When I think of Viviedo I think of thick between the ears, no basis for fact, but I suspect his IQ is not very high. thanks, douglas now you are talking about DV problem.
  21. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jan 9, 2015 -> 04:26 AM) He's like most ballplayers in that he's all about the buck. Big deal. It ended badly. You can't tell me, though, that Ozzie Guillen doesn't care about Jerry and the White Sox. I mean sure Guillen is a spoiled-rotten ex-ballplayer. But in the big picture, he bleeds White Sox black. You can't convince me otherwise of that. The bottom line is it was a Kenny-Ozzie war and Kenny won the war. Kenny won decisively cause Ozzie doesn't figure to manage ever again. Will he work in baseball again in any capacity?? Not so sure except in broadcasting. Kenny does deserve credit, for lauding Ozzie publicly in the press all the time, when he clearly could rub it in after winning the war. As much as I worship Ozzie, I think if he'd have won the war, he'd probably still be needling Kenny in the press. there were several things that derailed Ozzie. the one important item or thing that triggered it was Ozzie's kid. he was a parent coming to defend his kid. he didn't or couldn't care if it was his kid fault. i don't ever remember where someone relations has so much media presence than his sons. that whole crap was of the ozzie's doing in some shape. granted Ozzie by default as being the manager, won the WS in 05, could anyone other manager have done that, who knows he was the manager. does that justify his number to be retired~ no.
  22. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jan 8, 2015 -> 02:40 PM) NL is headed up by the Nationals and Dodgers. Cardinals aren't too far behind, especially if they get the "front end starter" they're rumored to be seeking. Another team to watch in the AL is the Mariners. i had to look them up, you may have a point. they have a group of interesting pitchers, nothing flashy but solid. it could be interesting in the west. the other point, wherever the 2 last A+ pitchers land, it just might change this whole list. i think everyone knows that. rhetorically speaking, i wonder where the pitchers sign?

    2015 Books Thread

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jan 8, 2015 -> 04:10 PM) Has anyone read any of Feist's Riftwar Cycle? I'm about halfway through the second book of the Riftwar Trilogy so far. It's not bad, started reading to attempt to quell my ASOIAF thirst. nice easy reading. too bad he is not that much of a writer. it took him several yrs to follow up the books with a new one. then he came out with a group of others. now the timeline of the books are out of whack. i found out later, some know writers give opportunities to new writers to write under the main author's name. following the contents of the story line.
  24. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jan 8, 2015 -> 08:16 PM) Any chance he sticks around on a minor league deal? Especially if his brother isn't traded? it will be a nice thing to let him walk and try for a spot on some other team outfield. if he can't find a spot, then he can come back for a minor league deal.
  25. as some have posted already, this is headscratcher. there are others who i can see go. he still provide a nice backup option at all 3 outfield positions. interesting move.
