  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 2, 2009 -> 11:38 AM) Santana is seemingly going back and forth on this with NY's new pitching coach. He said the soreness is probably because their new pitching coach had him throwing too much, every other day since the start of camp. Their pitching coach, Warthen, responded by saying that he though Johan was pushing himself too hard because he wanted to be ready for the WBC. I thought the Mets and/or Santana already said he wasn't pitching in the WBC. (I can't remember which one, I think since Santana had some sort of procedure done in the offseason the Mets had a right to veto him playing in it.) Is he scheduled to play in it? If I'm the Mets he gets the MRI, too much of a risk
  2. QUOTE (MHizzle85 @ Mar 2, 2009 -> 04:22 PM) Brown looked really dominant last night. I'm assuming we'll see him face Faber again, real question is will he be able to beat Faber again? I'm looking forward to that rematch, I guarantee Faber doesn't try a flashy move against Brown again
  3. QUOTE (jenks45monster @ Mar 2, 2009 -> 05:18 PM) I wouldn't mind taking a college bat (1B/DH?, CF?) at #23 and young high school arms with sign-ability concerns with the sandwich pick (Rick Porcello, Tim Melville types) and in the 2nd round (Cahill, Anderson, and Tillman are a few top pitching prospects that went in the 2nd round in 2006). Let's get out there and spend this year. It'd be nice to have a top system for the next few years to come. It could also give the Sox the ability to make a decent move during the season. If they're satisfied with the haul they get in the draft, or are expected to get, some of the names they have in the system now might be expendable. I think with the economy there's going to be some quality veterans out there this year, espicially if some teams fall flat on their faces out of the gate.
  4. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Mar 2, 2009 -> 02:27 PM) It depends. Will Jermaine project to be worth $12M next year? If not you don't offer him arbitration, you just let him walk. Jermaine has been no where near the most productive RF in the AL over the last 3 seasons. He's definitely hit the most HR but I'd say he's been the 5th or 6th most valuable RF depending on where you rank Ichiro and Nick Markakis. I think they would probably let him walk. Unless the economy does a complete 180 within the next year, at his age, JD won't be worth anything near 12m. He's comparable overall to Abreu, and what did Abreu get? I believe 5. I'm not trying to discredit JD in anyway, he's been a very good player for the Sox, just after this contract he's now worth taking a risk of getting stuck with him at that high of a rate.
  5. QUOTE (Paint it Black @ Mar 2, 2009 -> 05:18 PM) Omar Little- The Wire Nobody on Soxtalk watched the Wire? So many great characters in this show so my opinion changes all the time. I watched the first two seasons of the Wire and think it's one of the best shows ever produced. Got behind in the 3rd season and didn't catch up yet, so I'm looking forward to watching it. I sort of did something I hate, but it was a great little secret for me for the first 2 years, then in became a critical hit and I was annoyed (specifically at The Sports Guy) about the attention. It's petty and I hate when people do it with bands, I have no excuse, I cost myself the entertainment.
  6. Would have loved to hear or see how Marquez looked, hopefully somebody who posts here went to the game
  7. QUOTE (zenryan @ Feb 28, 2009 -> 02:19 PM) Plus the last Nog fight has me wondering if he has much left in the Tank. The guy claims he's in his low 30s but he's been through so many crueling fights and his body might not have much left. I hope it was just one of those nights and Nog can bounce back with a big win. I dont think Couture is a legit threat in the heavyweight division anymore but I would like to still see Nog in the mix. Not to make an excuse for him because Mir looked awesome, but I believe he had some sort of injury, a little more serious than injuries fighters normally fight with, but I do agree, he's had a ton of hard fights and it may have caught up with him
  8. unfortunately I've been at that point for awhile.
  9. http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/02/27/edu...year/index.html What do all of you think of this, espicially teachers or administrators? I had heard that U.S. test results were always skewed because the U.S. tested everyone why a lot of other countries tested only select students. Then I heard that's the way it should be compared because those are the students who the U.S. are competing with. I know nothing about the education system so would love to hear opinions on that as well.
  10. QUOTE (zenryan @ Feb 27, 2009 -> 04:51 PM) Going to be an interesting fight since its only 3 rounds. I think Couture can edge of a 3 round fight by being cautious and stalling. A 5 round fight I would def. have taken Nog. Good point, I can see Randy handily winning round one, eeking round 2 and Nog dominating round 3 with mo in his favor but, like you pointed out, the 3 round limit getting him.
  11. QUOTE (retro1983hat @ Feb 28, 2009 -> 08:40 AM) On Thursday I got my email from the Brewers for chance to buy tix for the games in June there. After a half hour, I got two in the bleachers for the Sunday game. Can't wait since because of the screwed up 6 team NL central, we keep missing the Brewers. Any other Sox Talkers going? Good chance I will be. I have a friend who is from Milwaukee so we've gone up there a bunch of times for Brewers games and I think he said he was going to get Brewer/Sox tickets for our group
  12. Kind of a generic/broad question, but where do people go for good baseball coverage? How has the MLB Network been? I'm looking for more of an honest assesment of MLB. Deadspin is good for this but it's not baseball centered and it's a little too jokey sometimes. firejoemorgan was very good but not around anymore. I'm just leery of ESPN and such since they have so much money tied in with MLB and they have idiots covering it. Phillips and Kruk are absolute clowns. I can't believe Phillips was a major market GM at one point with some of the insane things he says.
  13. QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Feb 27, 2009 -> 05:24 PM) makes me think he doesn't want to play for the dodgers. They are throwing ridiculous amounts of cash at him. They are annoyed at the deferred money. Boras issued a statement that said if it was a straight up 2 year 45 they would sign. Dodgers are OK for now since there doesn't appear to be another team in the mix, but IMO they're on very thin ice. All they need is for Teixeira to blow a hamstring out rounding a base in ST and then Boras dream comes true. You can switch Tex's name out with many players and teams, just using as an example of how no market for Manny could become one quickly.
  14. I don't know if this should go in the TV or music thread, but I don't really watch American Idol past the audition phase (hey, Simon still cracks me up atleast 3 times an episode) and I happened to catch a few minutes of the results show yesterday. They have this 16 year old girl on with dyed red hair who sang "Alone" by Heart and OMG was it good. She tore that up
  15. QUOTE (LosMediasBlancas @ Feb 27, 2009 -> 12:40 PM) Good or bad can be debated forever, but their influence on music and culture in that particular era cannot be denied. Unfortunately, they oversaturated the market and the general public burned out on them. When I first heard Nevermind, I knew they were going to go through the roof, so I made a point of not listening to them any more. Of course I'd hear their stuff at bars and parties, but I'd change the station when they came on the radio and would rarely pop in their Cds. So their music is still pretty fresh to me, I have "In Utero" playing in my car right now, I bought it just last week. Good post, I think people sometimes confuse the cultural impact they get credit and pub for over people hyping the music (not me, I love their music). So if someone keeps hearing on Nirvana over and over and sit down and listen to their music I can see how they may think it's overrated. Espically younger kids who don't remember what the mainstream music scene was like back then. It was either glam rock (which FWIW there are some great glam rock bands) or really manufactured pop. Nirvana was just a smack in the face. I was about 13 when Nevermind came out and my cousin had got it before it really broke and to this day I still remember hearing it for the first time.
  16. http://www.mmaweekly.com/absolutenm/templa...3&zoneid=13 Looks like Big Nog and Randy will be fighting at 101
  17. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Feb 27, 2009 -> 01:38 AM) I'm not sure that's much worse than some of the idiotic things broadcasters will say about Erin Andrews. Almost as fawning as the Tim Tebow commentary in the national championship game. Try to be a little objective, fellas. Yeah I'm kind of suprised the Dick Vitale interview with her at one of the Tampa Bay playoff games flew under the radar as much as it did.
  18. QUOTE (joesaiditstrue @ Feb 26, 2009 -> 07:10 PM) And he said...? I was seeing if anyone else remembers it, there's a thread somewhere on here where it was discussed and other people remember seeing it, so I'm not crazy... He said something along the lines of "I tell ya Wimpy we get the best beaver shots in all of baseball." There was dead silence for about a minute, Wimpy and Hawk obviously hit the kill switches on their mics, Wimpy comes back and through laughter says "That's Ken Harrelson, care of Sportschannel."
  19. ESPN Radio is now saying Red Kerr died as well today.
  20. Our local bank got bought out by Harris a few years ago and I can't say I have a complaint, they've been good
  21. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Feb 26, 2009 -> 04:59 PM) I can just imagine it catching on and having Hawk call him Slayer during a game having absolutely no clue where and how it originated. There would just be something so satisfying about the next star of the franchise being called a pussy slayer by crusty old baseball announcers. Um, Hawk would be more likely to keep the nickname if he knew the root of it. Who knows if it's true or not, but I've heard an interesting origin story of Carlos Lee's nickname. Also, Hawk said one of the craziest things I've ever heard during a broadcast. It was during ST and he was still with Wimpy. It involved the camera being on two women in bikinis. If the internet existed then he would have been fired.
  22. QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 26, 2009 -> 11:07 AM) haha, it's great The Country's Finest Bank That's what they say it means now that it's national, but above is the original name
  23. QUOTE (DBAHO @ Feb 26, 2009 -> 11:06 AM) What does TCF stand for again (don't think I've seen any in Noo Yawk). something along the lines of Twin Cities Financial, it started up in Minny.
