  1. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jul 24, 2005 -> 09:37 AM) Joe Crede @ $400,000 - .253/.307/.441 Mike Lowell @ $7,500,000 - .236/.285/.366 I think they would both still be here right? Even if the Sox take on Lowell I haven't heard Crede's going. Also, I would add to Mike Lowell's column World Series Champion. Not a bad bench insurance policy IMO.
  2. QUOTE(VAfan @ Jul 24, 2005 -> 09:26 AM) I suppose his L balances some W he got earlier when he didn't pitch nearly as well. It was certainly a nice game. Had we not run ourselves into 3 outs in the first two innings, we could have gotten to Wade Miller and won the game. Don't forget the bases loaded situation too!!
  3. Posted in the other thread that I really want Lowell as part of this deal at this point, and I think Levine is saying it's still possible he's added. Has anyone heard how the deal changes is Lowell is added, ie what extra do the Sox have to give up, etc... I think if the Sox are willing to eat some of that contract they would probably only have to give up another prospect, but if Marlins eat a good deal of money it would be a high prospect
  4. QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Jul 24, 2005 -> 09:23 AM) Also, Bruce mentioned that the Sox still will want to make the deal even if they can't re-sign A.J. If we don't re-sign, we can always offer him arbitration and get two draft picks. Not the worst thing, IMO. Yeah, i know it's putting the cart infront of the horse, but if the Sox continue their major attendance upswing they'll have no excuse but to add payroll in the offseason. So if this goes down and PK and AJ walk, the Sox would have to add some major pieces in the off-season, which is pretty weak this year.
  5. QUOTE(JimH @ Jul 24, 2005 -> 09:20 AM) To add to Al's post: SoxTalk favorite whipping boy Bruce Levine says this trade could go down within the next 24 hours, Sox have definitely not ruled out taking on Lowell, management is concerned about Frank being in and out of the lineup all year. He is still saying Brandon McCarthy and Marte from this side. Call me f***ing crazy, but I want Lowell in this deal. Do his numbers absolutely suck this year? Yup. Does he look like my old friend Neil? Yup. But when I went to the Marlins game at the Cell last year and sat right behind their dugout he had a s***TY day at the plate, but he made every play in the field and was still one of the more active players in the dugout rooting his team on. He's got World Series and playoff experience, and I think a change of scenery could help him out. Also, it's an insurance policy for Crede's back, and to be honest, after the offensive display the last few days, he's not going to hurt on that side at this point (I gurantee you he can role into a double play or strike out as well as Rowand and Crazy) The only thing that is making me crap my pants with this is including Marte. I know he's been up and down this season, but I do not want to see Kevin Walker on this team until the roster expands and the Sox have clinched a playoff spot. That guy is not a major league pitcher.
  6. yeah, you're 100% right. 3 out of 3 quality starts against the Red Sox, without Garcia pitching any of them, is quite an accomplishment (At least I think MB only gave up 3 earned).
  7. I think he'll win it because I think the Cubs will fall out of playoff contention by early to Mid-September ( I know they're like 5 out now, but have like 3 or 4 teams in front of them with a lot of Houston and Cardinals on their schedule), so it will really free him up to go for it, especially since his lead is so dominant in the batting average. So if he's a few behind in HR or RBI's he can swing for the fences for the last week or two
  8. Didn't see this KW interview, but reading the report, it seems like he's changed his tone a little. a couple weeks ago he was saying things like 'no major trades' etc.. now he's admitted there's possibilities, so I think he's onto something here, and knowing KW it's going to be a name nobody thought of
  9. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jul 23, 2005 -> 02:56 AM) Garland had only been drafted the previous year. The Cubs hardly gave up on him. Karchner had some decent numbers when we traded him, they were just crappy after the trade. The Cubs were pretty desperate for bullpen help at the time they made that deal. If I remember correctly I think Garland lost like 5 m.p.h. off his fastball in the Cubs system, and they couldn't figure out why. Then when he got into the Sox system they had him stop throwing the big 12 to 6 curve he use to throw, and the velocity came back.
  10. Damn, I thought KW was talking to the Champy's Good-Time Slammers of the unlimited arch softball league about trading for Roberto Alomar
  11. Article on Chicagosports.com and in the trib tomorrow says that Wood may go on the DL now.... boy weren't the Cubs just saying he would miss one start? Even post dating it, I think he would miss at least 2...
  12. It seems KW didn't want the Lowell contract, neither did the O's, but swapping Ponson's contract may be the only way this goes down... for the sake of the teams involved Burnett has to be moved by this weekend or the Fish have to tell him he's staying, probably f***ing up the atmosphere in the clubhouse
  13. I can't believe that he didn't say he had an "exclusive" then come on and say "oh, sox are still interested in A.J. Burnett!"
  14. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jul 21, 2005 -> 10:19 PM) Luckily I get to see him in person Sunday! :headshake :puke That's the worst feeling in the world to go to a game like that. You know that your team has a good chance of getting f***ing shelled. And I just have visions of Arroyo dropping that curve-ball and the White Sox hitters flailing at it
  15. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jul 21, 2005 -> 10:10 PM) Nobody good, that's why PK is gonna get an obscene contract. like them or hate them you can probably add Thome and Overbay to this list, Howard and Fielder will be playing 1b for their teams full time next year
  16. QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 21, 2005 -> 10:14 PM) Look at our lineup, and look at the Red Sox lineup. We don't match-up well at all against teams with great offenses. We have very good starting pitchers, but we don't have pitchers that can consistently strikeout hitters with 2 strikes. Thus, the opposition gets a lot of opportunties to put the ball in play. The Red Sox, Yanks, Rangers, etc. don't have any John Buck's to help bail our pitchers out. Freddy Garcia can get the strikeouts if need be, but unfortunately he doesn't turn it on until the 3rd inning. I live in fear of what the Red Sox or Yankees would do to him in his first two innings when he struggles I think Boston leads the league in pitches taken at bat.... do you have any idea what that is going to do to Contreras? Wow gives me the chills just thinking of him throwing three straight forkballs in the dirt, getting a 3-1 count then another forkball in the dirt or hung...
  17. QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 21, 2005 -> 10:09 PM) As one of the people on this board who most strongly believe we need to be proactive instead of reactive to any slump, my biggest fear is that KW and Ozzie will read the standings page too much, and judge our team based on our record. Our record is not a good predicator of how our team will play the rest of this season. Our pitching is not going to put up the same numbers that we did at the beginning of this season. Not a chance in hell it will happen with the ball flying out of the Cell. Man, that sums it up well for me too... you can't rest on this lead. Like I posted earlier, if the Twins can get in managable when the head-to-head games start they have a HUGE mental advantage of the Sox. I hate to say it, but I'm starting to agree with the ESPN guys who say this team is a lot like the Mariners who won 110+ games a few years back.... real solid and difficult for average to below average teams to beat, but don't have the firepower for the post-season
  18. I am really dissapointed right now as a Sox fan. I just don't think this team as constituted has it to go deep in October. MB pitched OK, but his defense let him down like there's no tomorrow. Again, what I was really dissapointed in is that this team doesn't have that championship edge, and on TV you can tell the crowd really sensed it. They seemed out of it, like they knew the Red Sox will win the game. Minnesota has a mental edge on this team from the last few years, if they can get the lead down to 6-7 before the head to heads start, look out...
  19. I don't want to hear chemistry talk from KW anymore, I'm not asking him to bring in a major known cancer, but this team needs a little more to compete, they looked absolutely sad out there tonight. 3 errors? A-Row would have never gotten an error on his play, but with his offensive production this year he needs to make those catches, that's why he's on the team If the dropped popup happenned to anyone on our team (i'm thinking PK) there's no chance in hell they hit a HR after that, and you knew Manny was going yard in that at-bat. I know the Twins were watching that game in the clubhouse at Detroit and looked at each other and thought "here we go again"
  20. QUOTE(DABearSoX @ Jul 21, 2005 -> 08:55 AM) I still just don't see why they would want Jose.....They don't want McCarthy......just seems strange to me that they would replace AJ with Jose...maybe they are thinking the mass cuban population will help Jose....they are very close to the same pitcher and Jose is a lot older....... i just don't know Up to this point the Marlins have made it clear they still feel they are in the playoff hunt, and only want to do this trade if they can get major league ready players to help them this year. McCarthy is not what they are looking for at this point
  21. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 07:35 PM) Question is, why do the Braves deal him? They are in a tight race out east. Either Furcal's shoulder is a big problem, or Betermit is that good. I don't know. Either way, Furcal would make this team even more explosive, and give us better option off of the bench. Uribe then becomes a backup at 2B, SS, and 3B, and we aquire what would become the best 9-hitter in baseball. I don't know what we would have to give up, but I'm sure Raffy wouldn't be cheap. Would love this move.
  22. QUOTE(SoxFanForever @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 10:43 AM) If he did buy the Pirates I bet he could turn them around into a contender pretty quickly. Yeah, I agree. For starters he would increse the buzz automatically and jack up season ticket sales, which is extremely imporant
  23. This has to be it with him. If he's hurt for an extended period of time I don't want to see any obnoxious "simulated game" updates and the like. This guy has been the most overhyped athlete in the last 20 years.
  24. QUOTE(KevHead0881 @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 04:34 PM) We get it. Being happy with a 62-31 record is wrong. Being sarcastically told that it was twice got the point across. Having it done the third time is just annoying. imagine how it feels to be told you should be happy with the record and not complain about 1,000 times
  25. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 04:17 PM) Hey, any team running into Douglass and Robertson will have a difficult time scoring. Right? But don't worry, it's bound to get easier in the playoffs. Rarely will you face good pitching. That's beginning to become a legitimate concern for me. Freddy struggles in the early innings and a team like the Yankees and the Angels will score more than 2 runs in the early innings off of him, it would be over by the 3rd. but we're not supposed to look past today, so I'm going to go do a dance of joy because we're 30 games over .500
