So is it a silent auction, or do teams get notified when they are outbid? Hmm, I think I should start an ebay auction. It would get some attention

AL gold gloves announced at 4 on ESPNEWS

Chavez wins again. *yawn* Why are they so afraid to give it to new people? Oh wait, Grudzielanek won. What a joke. -
Wow, and even stupider idea! Trade all the proven players for pitching prospects, then trade those prospects to fill the holes we just created!

Dave Roberts looking like a strong possibility

QUOTE(VAfan @ Nov 2, 2006 -> 01:06 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> You beat me to Moises Alou. I haven't been on Sox talk in a while, but when I noticed his name in ESPN magazine, it struck me as an immediate fit for the Sox. When he's not playing LF, he could spell Thome against lefties. Thome couldn't hit lefties at all -- slugging below .400 against them. Meanwhile, Alou slugged .571 last season. My biggest question is what kind of contract might Alou demand? He's 40, but would he take a 1-year deal? Is he looking for anything close to the $7.5 million he got last year? Could the Sox get him for a 1-year guarantee of $5-6 million with a second year option for a similar amount but a $1 mill. buyout? My other question is whether he's completely healthy (he played only 98 games last season). As for Roberts, he just doesn't do much for me, especially if he wants a raise. I'd rather sign a true hitter like Alou and use Mack to back him up or spell him against right handers. I like the Alou idea too, but who plays LF when there is a lefty on the mound? Mack is the worst against LHP. -
Trading Thome is an idiotic move and isn't going to happen. How did all those right handed dominant Sox teams do a few years ago? Don't we face more right handers than left handers? Oh yeah, trading Thome isn't going to happen. He was the second best hitter on the team last year only becasue Dye was playing out of his mind, and Thome was also protecting him when he was in the 4th spot. But I guess I'll just never change the opinion of those with a selective second half memory who won't let the damn stats get in their way.

Roto is saying it hasn't been confirmed as steroids. MLB suspended RHP Guillermo Mota 50 games for violating the joint drug prevention and treatment program. The statement didn't say whether it was steroids. If it was, it would explain how his velocity, which had been down in Cleveland, suddenly climbed upon his signing with the Mets. Mota, a free agent, was set for a nice payday after such a successful run in New York, but he may have to settle for an incentive-laden one-year deal now. The suspension will take effect at the beginning of next season.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Oct 31, 2006 -> 02:20 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Don't know about the money, but if we're looking for a 1 year rental as a backup catcher/right handed DH who could give Thome some extra time off...well... So when Piazza plays as a DH, who catches? The left handed AJ Pierzynski?

I believe this was a rumor started by Will Carroll and the New York press is on it, but Bruce Levine shot it down during the 9 o'clock hour on ESPN radio. Would you trade Garcia for Sheff + cash and put Gary in LF?

QUOTE(fathom @ Oct 30, 2006 -> 10:51 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I think Mackowiak should be the odd man out. With Cintron and Gload on the bench, I'm happy with the lefty bats we have. Also, getting rid of Mackowiak would ease our blood pressure, as Ozzie won't be able to keep putting him in CF. Mack is a much better hitter than Cintron, and who's to say that Mack replacement won't be misused by Guillen because of his lack of faith in BA?

Carmen said he was told two seats would remain blue and have plaques installed on them. The seat where Konerko WS grand slam landed, and Pods' walk off homer. It will be similar to the Red Sox's red seat with Ted Williams.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Oct 30, 2006 -> 12:18 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> At least according to ESPN, it's 50 batters last season not 16. Yeah I read TB as "Total batters." Looking at the numbers, it's the walks that killed him. LH had a higher OBP against than SLG% against.

There just aren't any good options out there for two million. I suppose you could spend $3 million a year on LaTroy Hawkins, but the Cubs wrecked him mentally.
-
Why do we have to have so many guys making the league min in our bullpen? Is there some kind of rule I'm missing? Cotts, Jenks, Thornton, Haeger, MacDougal are all cheap. Spending $2 million on a reliever is nothing regardless of what his role is. Look how much relievers have been getting the past few offseason. The bullpen next season could cost $6 million next season and be: Jenks-closer Thorton and Cotts as LOOGY's and/or left handed setup man MacDougal-right handed setup man Riske-6/7th inning guy. (Our starters should still be expected to go 7 innings next year) Haeger-long man QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Oct 30, 2006 -> 12:00 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Another little thing I feel about this...while Riske may have been tolerable against Righties, he's also a bit disappointing against lefties, who put up an .818 OPS against him last year. Now, while Ozzie seems to obsess like crazy about the righty/lefty matchups when he's filling out his lineup, and when letting pitchers start innings, he's often struck me as not being nearly up to LaRussa's level when it comes to using a ROOGY the right way...1-2 batters and only against righties. He almost always seems to give whoever he brings in a couple of batters no matter the situation, at least to my eyes, which means that anyone we bring in would need to be able to face guys from both sides. Your sample size is 16 batters, or about 5 innings of work Riske shouldn't be used in late situations where managers focus on the lefty/lefty and righty/righty matchups. Everytime when Ozzie started to use the LOOGY in the 6th or 7th inning, he got burned. Remember the Shingo 3 HR in the 9th against Cleveland? That was due to Ozzie overmanaging.

QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Oct 30, 2006 -> 11:50 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Aside from what Balta said, two million could make a noteable difference when you consider the raises players across the team will receive. Such an amount may be the deciding factor in drawing a FA to our ballclub. I doubt it. People were saying this 500K from 7-11 "was no big deal." Is it a "big deal" to pay a guy who typical has an ERA in the 3's, a WHIP around 1.3 $1.5 million to be your 5th option out of the pen? Hell no. I'd rather see Riske at $2 million instead of Tracey or Logan or some other flash in the bottle during spring training making less than 400 K in that role. Then again we could spend that money on a backup catcher:
-
I think Riske is underrated here (not that he was that good, just that he wasn't that bad.) Jenks, Thornton, MacDougal, Cotts (just because he is left handed,) are all above Riske in the bullpen chain, and he's cheap. What's the big deal bringing him back around $2 million? I didn't realize he was that effective against right handers as well

QUOTE(TLAK @ Oct 27, 2006 -> 07:36 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> He's 1-7 (.143) so far with the Tiburones. A small sample, but not inconsistant with the larger sample we saw last summer. I really think the team should bring in a legit CF, maybe along the lines of a David DeJesus. Then if Brian wants to play, all he has to do is play better than him. I think it would help both Brian and the team. Did you miss my post the last time your brought up Dejesus? Why would the Royals trade a guy they have lock up cheaply for a long period of time? They moved him to LF to keep him healthy. How many other players are "along the lines" like Dejesus?

QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Oct 29, 2006 -> 10:22 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I could imagine a line-up like this: CF-Roberts SS-FA/trade (Lugo woud be nice or Uribe trade bring back) RF-Dye DH-Thome 1B-Konerko 3B-Crede 2b-Iguchi C-AJ LF-Fields/Sweeney I really think we need the top two hitters to be speedy contact hitters, and then stack teh bottom the line-up. I dont think this lineup is unfeasable at all and it would make the offense much more consistent. Why the hate for Anderson? I recall reading that Roberts might sign with the Giants if Bochy went there. -

My brother loves messing with them (giving the same answer to two conflicting questions,) but I usually tells them I have zero interest in politics and I don't even know who the president is. -

QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Oct 26, 2006 -> 08:53 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/10/25/poll.bush/index.html Guess people aren't all that upset about the Patriot Act or wiretapping or much of anything else that has been done to fight terrorism. No surprise to me. 39>34>25 Edit: If you add the two you highlighted, then the point changes but that 39% is still too large of a number. Of course this sample size was just over a 1000 people, so I don't put too much stock in it. In regards to the patriot act, isn't that more of infringing on our current civil liberties opposed to "restricting" people's civil liberties? Maybe it's just the way I read it. -
QUOTE(striker62704 @ Oct 26, 2006 -> 03:07 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Just remember too, we traded Carlos Lee who was making $9mil, hit .300, 30 hrs, and almost 99 RBIs for Vizcaino 3.75 ERA and Podsednik .244 average. I wouldn't rule out a Dye trade. I don't recall Dye ever sliding into second "like his wife was turning the double play."

QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Oct 26, 2006 -> 05:45 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Please enlightmen me as to where one could find defense as good as or nearly as good as Uribe's while also finding an upgrade from a .715 OPS for $4.5 mill. Add to the fact that KW has already given him a vote of confidence, and I'm not sure I see any reason why Uribe would be dealt. I'm not so sure if they'd deal him, but Omar Vizquel plays great defense, will post an OPS greater than .698 (Uribe's OPS from last season,) and makes a little over $4 million.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 25, 2006 -> 01:15 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> People almost never lose their property due to the Endangered Species Act. Its usually just a matter of certain activities (building of certain types, mining or logging, fishing or hunting) being restricted. And the takings clause of the 5th Amendment already allows for compensation due to degradation of value of the property, which is usually handled in a hearing by the agency involved (USFS, BLM, etc.). No, it happens. Why should I or anyone else care about an endangered species? The bill was poorly written takes away logging jobs and areas that can be turned into homes or businesses. -

-Sets aside religious beliefs or be an atheist (which will probably have the president be pro-choice and supporting gay marriages) -End "The war on drugs" and create "the war on illegal drug dealers by regulating and taxing current illegal drugs -Opposes the endangered species act -Supports oil drilling in the US if it creates job and lowers the price of gasoline
