How did we ever lose Fabio Castro?
QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Oct 23, 2006 -> 10:58 PM) Like first overall in the draft Ya, which is exactly why either way it was a serious oversight by the organization. If we thought they wouldn't take him, well they must not have paid much attention since he was the top guy and teams were fighting to trade for him and if we thought he didn't have value well shame on us because obviously he did have value (at least trade value) and we could have got a valuable chip or two for our system.

QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Oct 23, 2006 -> 03:31 PM) If you know where Ft. Irwin is that's where I'll be from Friday up until the day before Thanksgiving. Wow, your out in the middle of nowhere. I was just through that area a month ago. Balta, what do you think of Owens Valley ever getting its water back. I saw an article about them still fighting just recently since you LA people stole it all

QUOTE(Heads22 @ Oct 23, 2006 -> 12:18 PM) Drew Tate out vs. N.Ill. Might as well start getting our future guys some rep's. Tate has been hurt all season and its cost us a few games (well that and a good chunk of the rest of the team being hurt). That game against IU really hurt cause we would have been locks for 2 to 3 losses (depending on the Wiscy game) and a Jan 1st bowl game (even in a very down year).

Dating Advice Needed
QUOTE(Soxy @ Oct 23, 2006 -> 10:01 AM) ^^^^ Definitely no flowers. And I also think Steff's suggestion of a fast dinner is really good too, plus Applebee's usually has a game on, so that could ease any awkward. Just be straightforward and honest, that way all expectations will be clear. And if stuff goes good at dinner, make a bit of a move during the movie. I don't know how you want to take things, but obviously start with the lame arm around the shoulder (if she's not interested she'll let you know and its no biggie) and if it is she'll move closer to you and you'll now know that she likes you in "that" way and you can procede accordingly.

Selig pondering postseason changes
QUOTE(Athomeboy_2000 @ Oct 22, 2006 -> 07:34 AM) Well, baseball was kind of forced to add the Wild card. With the league expanding they absolutely could not keep it at 2 divisions per league. There needed to be 3 and a "bye week" in baseball is way too long for a team to have off. It wouldnt be fare to the bye team. I don't know if it was a forced issue, at the time it was heavily debated and baseball purists everywhere we screaming murder.

Macha critical of Beane...
Didn't Frank Thomas say after they were down 3-0 that they were going to try and win it for Macha (that doesn't seem like something you'd say if the vast majority of the players were against Macha). It sounded like Bradley (what a shock) and Melhouse had some problems but that was about it.

MLB has new tentative CBA
I can't believe this isn't getting more pub. This is absolutely fantastic news. Its great for the PR of baseball (5 more years without a labor stoppage) and is obviously great for us fans.

My grades during dead time
QUOTE(greg775 @ Oct 23, 2006 -> 01:22 PM) I don't know why you'd say AJ doesn't deserve better than a C. Look around baseball. There aren't many better hitters at the catcher position. I don't know his stolen base stats as to how well he threw guys out. Is he still respectable there? Anybody know? But judging from some of his key bombs which should have sparked this team big time but didn't, I think he deserves the A minus; B plus type grade. My bullpen grades were basically Cs. I thought Jenks deserved an A because of his great save totals. Those other guys I thought were average at best. I guess MacD mighta deserved a B- in my mind but not much better than that. AJ was a good hitter, but defensively there were some serious issues.

How did we ever lose Fabio Castro?
Considering some of the players we had on the 40 man roster at the time (and the fact we actually had a couple openings) it was a very very bad move. The Sox evidently didn't think highly enough to claim him (or that no one would take him) and either way they were wrong (since someone did take him and considering numerous scouts in other organizations liked him there was obviously value in Fabio, even if it was as trade bait).

What are the odds of Dye getting dealt?
If we are out of contention at the trade deadline, yes, but otherwise we'll be holding onto Dye at the rate he has. Heck, I wouldn't be shocked if the Sox talked about ripping up his current contract and giving him a new 2-3 year deal, paying him more than he'd get this year, but getting a bit of a discount in the following years. Maybe like a 3yr 30 type deal.

QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Oct 21, 2006 -> 04:27 PM) I didn't see the game. Can somebody give me a general recap? I know the final score and that Hart had a big 2nd half, but that's about it. IT was a very close game the whole way. Iowa and Michigan failed to do much anything on offense and Iowa missed a couple potential TD's but at the same time Michigan had a couple shots in the red zone that they failed at as well. Good defense although I missed the final few minutes. Hart was the reason you guys won, he dominated the 2nd half after getting destroyed in the 1st half. Both defenses played pretty darn well and were getting to the QB's. Breston had a tremendous return after Iowa had tied things up which may have been the difference maker in the game.

Yes, Iowa with an interception. Pascal should have pickeed it, but our LB came in and picked him up. Lets get some points.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Oct 21, 2006 -> 05:23 AM) I wouldn't say it's a given Soriano hits 40HR's for whoever he plays for next season. He screams out Adrian Beltre v2.0 all over again IMHO, so I'd be wary for whoever gets him that they don't put unrealistic expectations on him. Huh. Soriano has been hitting hr's and stealing bases and being a damn good hitter since he joined the majors. Yes he strikes out more than you'd like and defensively at 2nd he wasn't that great, but out in left there is nothing wrong with him. There is absolutely no way to compare these two guys. Soriano has been doing this for a long time and went for a number of years as being one of the most underrated offensive players in the game because people slammed him for not being able to walk (big freaking whoop, the guy hits for avg, power and steals bases).

The Official Josh Fields Thread
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Oct 21, 2006 -> 05:27 AM) Here are Carillo's AA numbers from 9 GS this season FWIW; 1-3, 3.02 ERA, 43 K's, 15 BB's, 5HR. He'd easily have the best stuff of any White Sox prospect if he came into our system. Also the Freddy Garcia to the Mets rumors are starting to heat up a little again. Writers for various newspapers are tossing around the Heilman and Milledge for Willis, Peavy etc. talk again. My question is, Humber and Milledge is probably too much to expect, would you do Milledge + fringe prospect for Garcia, if you couldn't get a better offer for Freddy elsewhere? Too bad there are serious reasons to have doubts about how he'll hold up. He doesn't exactly have a great frame. I'm perfectly happy with Broadway and McCulloch.

Hart is playing and Tate is taking shots left and right, but we got Young, King and a few other guys back which is nice. 3-0 Michigan in the 2nd quarter.

The Official Josh Fields Thread
QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Oct 20, 2006 -> 05:02 PM) From everything I read he is no longer a "butcher" at the hot corner, but certainly isnt near the fielder Crede is either. But I havent actually watched him besides in the majors so im sure someone that lives by charlotte or one of you minorleague nuts know more. He'd still be subpar at the major league level. I'm not saying he has the ability to be at least average, but his first season he'd be at least a touch below league average.

The Official Josh Fields Thread
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Oct 20, 2006 -> 04:42 PM) I do think all signs point to Crede being dealt either this winter or next. The difference of opinion on his back, I think is a huge issue. The White Sox still are going to have to be and always will be fiscally responsible. Crede is going to get a 5 year at least $50 million contract if he performs like he did in 2006. I really doubt the White Sox are willing to gamble that many years and that many dollars that his back will hold up. If Crede is dealt though, I agree with the above comments, Josh Fields is not an adequate replacement. I've posted before that I think Fields is a right handed Eric Hinske at best. A guy who will be around a while and probably have a couple of decent years, but there's something about him I've never liked. I was impressed with his ability to take pitches in September though. His walk and strikeout rate stayed about the same between 2005 and 2006, and he actually drove in more runners at Birmingham. I just don't see where you go from possible if not probable bust to great prospect after hitting .300 at Charlotte when you're 23 years old. Its also really too bad the White Sox didn't have him play LF at Charlotte this year at least when it was apparent that he wasn't going to get much time at 3B with the major league club. He should have been playing LF at least for the entire second half of the past season. Also, Fields hit 2 doubles and a homer in 20 ABs. That's not bad, but lets not get too excited. BA had 2 homers and a double in the same game in 2005 and it didn't exactly propel him to a silver slugger award in 2006. I don't know who was labelling him a bust considering 05 was his first full season and he was in AA which is an extreme pitchers park. He suffered through the death of a very good friend of his (or at least I think it was a death, but it was a pretty narly car crash one of his best friends was involved in) and eventually came out of an emotional funk to have statistically a very strong 2nd half of the season (which was pretty well documented on the site and FutureSox). Yes, it was a sample but it was also Field's first extended time in AA so mixed with the off field issue's and just the need to make adjustments to a higher level, a 2 month hiccup before playing pretty good for the remainder of his first full rookie campaign would not make him a bust. Last year his numbers were very good as well (but in an extreme hitters park). My flaw with him is that defensively he's a butcher at 3rd base and offensively I think he has some holes in the swing (albeit not near as serious as BA's holes, which I recall documenting and saying a whole lot in 05 where I said the BA I saw in 05 would have zero chance of ever suceeding in the major league level unless he made some serious adjustments to his swing/plate approach).

The Official Josh Fields Thread
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Oct 20, 2006 -> 03:57 PM) I hope Fields is traded. Unless he's going to hit 40 homers, or drive in 120 runs, the Sox don't need to add a guy who will whiff 140 times a season to their line-up. I see no reason not to trade him. There is absolultely no way that I buy into the belief that Josh Fields makes Joe Crede expendable. Josh Fields is not a good 3rd base prospect. He's a good offensive prospect (not great) and the idea of him butchering the ball at 3rd while whiffing 120-150 times is not fun. I'll take Mr. Crede, his clutch bat/glove and all that jazz (even if it means he has Boras as his rep). We still are in control of him for a little longer anyway so the team has options.

Mets/Cards Game 7
QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Oct 19, 2006 -> 07:06 PM) Anyone just see that play that Chavez just made? In the context of the game and its settings, that's one of the greatest plays I've ever seen. That was an amazing grab, but call me a homer cause I think Uribe's running catch into the stands paired with the throw he made on the final out combined to be what I dub the greatest player ever. I also think Tommy Amorchor for the Brooklyn Dodgers with what was a world series saving catch. That said the grab wasn't quite as amazing as the one Chavez made, however Amorchor (and ya I botched the spelling) made a catch that finally got the Dodgers past the Yankees after years and years of falling to them in the series. I've also had my dad brainwash this into my mind (as he still remembers seeing it live on TV when he was a kid and well he's been a Dodger fan since there days in Brooklyn).
