  1. QUOTE(redandwhite @ Oct 16, 2006 -> 01:19 PM) Interesting proposal, Jason. If the White Sox are going to make a big splash this offseason, Ramirez's name has to be considered. Do you think the BoSox would consider that? I'm assuming they may finally act on the usual Manny wants to be traded off-season dilemma and I'd like to think that Buehrle is the top of guy that they'd love to get in return for Manny. Plus, based on what I've heard from a few BoSox fans, they really don't want anything to do with Coco Crisp (who had a down season, but would still look a lot better at the top of the order than Pods). Its pretty clear they'll need pitching and while Buehrle is coming off a bad year, its not like he's over the hill or anything. Heck, that could turn into a total coup if Buehrle were to respond and pitch like the Buehrle Sox fans came to love.
  2. I still can't get over that Iowa game. Wow, I knew we weren't as good as some experts said we'd be, but I didn't think we'd lose to IU.
  3. QUOTE(BamaJason @ Oct 13, 2006 -> 09:24 PM) IMO, Getz is the best 2B I have seen at the Barons since Aaron Miles. Great glove and consistent hitter. I hope to see him again next season, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if he gets the call. Welcome aboard and thanks for your insite. Judging by your name, I take it you see at least a few Baron's games a year? The thing I like about Getz is his ability to play multiple positions (since I see him as a utility player in the long run).
  4. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Oct 16, 2006 -> 01:06 PM) One problem next season is adding together Matsuzaka's salary AND the cost of paying his former team for negotiating rights. Those two together could realistically run over 20 million. Rodriguez would cost well under this-- especially if McCarthy and Crede were traded. Remove Garcia and it becomes more realistic, but then again, there's the issue of raises across the team. I also would like to throw another name out there. If we want to talk about Arod, why not talk about the possibility of Manny Ramirez. We need a left fielder and we could probably get him without giving up much. Just throwing it out there, no matter how un-realistic it is. I'm pretty sure a Buehrle for Ramirez (and if we wanted Crisp we could ask for him too) deal would work, with the BoSox also including a good chunk of cash. Than we'd again have the ability to try and swing other deals to fill the rest of the holes (using Pods, other starters and whoever else). Remove Garcia and it becomes more realistic, but then again, there's the issue of raises across the team. In that case, you also have one other factor. Is it worth/smart paying 20 million for a guy thats never pitched in the majors. If we were willing to add that much payroll, what starter could we trade for. Could we work a deal for Ben Sheets (who had some injury problems this past season and of course in years past) or some other starter who we could get for less in terms of players given up because we'd be willing to take on salary.
  5. QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Oct 16, 2006 -> 12:59 PM) But not after you've been banned before... http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?showuser=4001 In that case, I take back my previous statement. Instead of a welcome, It will be a don't let the door hit ya on your way out.
  6. QUOTE(redandwhite @ Oct 15, 2006 -> 11:41 PM) Joe Crede doesn't deserve 10 million dollars, regardless of how many years that deal would be worth. He's a 10 mill a year player if he can duplicate last years numbers. I think he's capable of similar numbers and I think he's the type of guy that could be a very very good player. I'd never consider him a super star though because I don't think of him ever developing into more than a 5 hitter. However, when you add in above average offensive ability with gold glove defense, well thats value. Plus the whole leadership qualities and all that jazz help too.
  7. QUOTE(The Critic @ Oct 16, 2006 -> 12:50 PM) Charley Steiner, isn't it? Thats the guy. I always think of him as "bearded" guy.
  8. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Oct 16, 2006 -> 12:09 PM) Heres the question, would you rather trade those pieces for A-rod or spend the same amount of money on Matsuzaka? The thing is the Sox wouldn't do that. I think if they got someone like Arod, it would be a guy that JR banks on using as the face of the franchise in the post world series era. The type of guy we market around, the type of guy we use to continue building positive PR in the city and as a whole turning this franchise into being more than just that 2nd baseball team in Chicago. However, logically speaking if we were willing to do both, I'd probably opt for Matsuzuka. But whose to say we can't pick up Arod and Matsuzuka while eventually landing Arod for a package involving one of Garcia/Buehrle/Vazquez and Josh Fields. Than in turn we swing another deal involving one of those remaining arms to another team for a prospect or two (maybe nothing stellar) but more of a financial wash). Mix that with the eventual non-tender of Pods (or trade) and a move of Uribe and we'd be able to keep a very similar payroll that the team has now. Another alternative option would of course be to move one of our bats to free up salary as well. I think we have a lot of options, the question is how many moves does Kenny want to make and how many of them will be contingent type moves which may hurt our leverage (in terms of what we could get for a guy). QUOTE(RockRaines @ Oct 16, 2006 -> 12:50 PM) Agreed. Matsu is 26 years old and has been dominating professionals in and out of Japan. I would rather overpay for his talents for the next several years, than take on A-rod for more money. I want to ask one thing. I thought Matsu had some arm troubles this year. Am I correct in this line of thought and if so what were the extent of them? By the way I'd love to get Matsu, but to do so we'd obviously have to move two pitchers (which I have no problem doing). I think Buehrle and Garcia/Vaz will be the one's that go. I really think we could get a ton for Mark and the reality is that he had some serious troubles, yet still has serious value and in a year we may not be able to afford him anyway so now may be the very best time. Of course if I had a crystal ball and knew last year was just an abberation, than I'd give him whatever it took and keep him a career White Sox (cause I think he's a tremendous leader and right now on pace to have a HOF career).

  10. QUOTE(Steff @ Oct 16, 2006 -> 12:45 PM) The problem is that it is long rumored that the Cubs are run from a higer office than the manager. Lou wont stand for this. And if it's true, he'll quit before spring training is over. I think with McPhail there, who is really a very good baseball guy, there was a lot less pull from Tribune's upper mgmt. However, over the past year or two there has been a shift back to where the baseball guys have there hands tied more often than not. In the end I think McPhail was sick of dealing with it, however he also knew the results with him at the helm weren't pretty so he resigned.
  11. For those tossing Lyon's name out there with our radio job, I'd just like to point out that Lyon's does a good chunk of work with the Dodgers on TV. Scully only does a few innings a game. To be honest I'm not quite sure how the Dodgers booth works, but you have Scully at times and at other times you have Lyon's and a former ESPN guy (whose name escapes me at the second).
  12. This is a fantastic move for the Cubs. A very good mgr that I'm sure wants to win real real bad after that disaster in Tampa. Plus he's had a year away which is often a good thing when it comes to mgr's like Pinella (who have that extra fire).
  13. Umm, I think some of you mis-read one thing.
  14. QUOTE(RME JICO @ Oct 15, 2006 -> 06:40 AM) I heard Razor Shines name brought up. He would be ideal as a bench coach, and possible successor to Ozzie. He has experience with a lot of the younger players and he seems to be an up and coming manager. I'd like him as a bench coach, but I still see the Sox finding a spot for Alomar Jr. Shines is the guy I want managing the team. The one thing I'd really like to see is us get a legit, top notch baseball guy on the bench who wouldn't be afraid to ocassionally let Ozzie know he disagrees with something or thinks something can be done better. Shines could very well be that guy. Its too bad Nossek isn't around cause he would have been that guy. Or like a Don Baylor type. Heck, even a Jerry Manuel type.
  15. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Oct 15, 2006 -> 06:19 AM) If it takes Brandon then forget about it. BTW, it's obviously real early so I can definitely see why NY would try to get Brandon included right now. That doesn't automatically mean a month or two from now that they won't rethink the stance on taking the other 3 pitchers. If we gave up Brandon but were willing to spend the extra money (in addition to our current payroll) on Arod without having to make any other major changes than I'd be willing to do that deal. The Yanks would obviously need to send a lot of money our way and if we gave up anything else I'd be talking about getting a good prospect in return from the Yanks. There is no guarantee Bmac is legit, there is a guarantee that Arod (when healthy and he's been healthy throughout his career) will be one of the 5 best position players in baseball year in year out.
  16. Man, this sucks. Uribe is a semi valuable shortstop but having this looming for a while will pretty much ruin whatever trade value he had.

  19. s***, Iowa has a great drive going and Simms fumbles it.
  20. QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Oct 13, 2006 -> 01:27 PM) but Cashman's an idiot, so we have that going for us. (evidence: the biggest problem with his club is lack of pitching yet he continually pursues all-star sluggers then can't make it out of the first round when good pitching defeats good hitting) I think we'd be idiots if we made that deal to be honest. I love AROD, but making that deal makes absolutely no sense unless we plan on moving someone like Paulie or Thome or another superstar or two for some front line pitching or some serious pitching prospects (which we could keep one or two of and move the others for whatever our needs are). Also, the talk on the local radio is that if the Angels were going to pick up Arod (or any team for that matter) that the only way the Yankees would get anything in return would be if they were paying a good portion of Arod's salary. Otherwise it appears (according to Socal Reports) that no team would trade for Arod. That basically means the Yanks either pay another few million per season to get a good looking young player in return or they could take on a salary guy that may have value to the Yanks (maybe a Freddy Garcia) and get another good young prospect to boot (someone like Josh Fields). In the Angels case, it appears they won't give up Adenhart unless they are getting some serious cash back.
  21. My Hawks will probably have a down year, but we have some athletes coming in and the following years recruiting classes are looking very promising as well. Its gonna be weird to see a Hawks game without Balding Brunner and Jeff Horner on the court.
  22. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Oct 13, 2006 -> 10:58 AM) Am I the only one who just doesn't give a s*** about Jay Mariotti? I just really don't care about this guy. I don't care either way. I tend to not get all bent out of shape based on what the media says. I take it ofr what it is and in Jay's case he writes to rile people up. He's not that great when it comes to baseball, but he gets great reactions out of fans and he sells people. Its not different than all the people that listened to Howard that absolutely hated him, yet they listened. Tons of people buy the Times to read Mariotti's column even though they hate him. On a sidenote I should say he's had some good articles, the problem is during baseball season he tends to be on another planet. But realistically, while he may not have phrased things that great, he's right about Ozzie being the type of mgr that won't be able to stick around very long.

  24. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Oct 12, 2006 -> 10:00 PM) If you've got Fields>Arod>Iguchi>Konerko around the horn, you might have a below average defensive player at every infield position, including catcher. There's no denying that A-Rod has been bad at 3B the last 2 seasons, maybe even the worst 3B in the league this year. I don't think it's a stretch to say that he's lost a step defensively, and that he won't be the fielder that he once was in Seattle and Texas. Fields is crapshoot*, but you've never heard his defense described as anything more than adequate. Plus he still needs another year to develop the bat at AAA. He might run into a few more HRs than Anderson, but he's going to look worse in more ABs than BA. If you trade Freddy + Crede for Arod, you've weakened the left side of your infield defensively on a pitching staff that has declining strikeout rates and is allowing more balls to be put in play. Fields will not be able to match Crede's output, which will negate the perceived huge jump in offense from your SS.. Let's not forget that adding ARod would likely mean that we've got LF-CF combo of Sweeney-Anderson which, while stronger defensively than the '06 unit, is not exactly going to light up the scoreboards. I'd like to avoid having 2 Rookies in the lineup along with Anderson if at all possible. Also, by not acquiring any pitching in the trade for one of our starters, you've weakened our overall pitching depth... Which means that Lance Broadway is our #6, and penciled into the '08 rotation. Any deal for A-Rod that includes both a starter and Crede is a loss for the Sox. *crapshoot -- not bloodly likely to be a good player. Which is why I think the only way we make the deal is if it involves a starter (and I'm willing to trade any of our starters not named Bmac), and Josh Fields (if we give up more, we maybe get a minor piece in return) for Arod. Financially it doesn't add a whole lot and we now have Uribe and Pods to deal (which once they are moved for some cheap pieces, we are talking about a financial wash).
  25. QUOTE(WHITESOXRANDY @ Oct 13, 2006 -> 07:43 AM) A lights out bullpen would be a major help. After that, maybe getting younger would help - I would look to trade Contreras for young pitching. I wouldn't mind retooling our staff. There are a few guys I have some question-marks about so if we could get younger quality guys I wouldn't be opposed. At the same time every one of our guys could come out next season and kick butt. First thing I'd do is try to make the pen a little stronger.
