Tiger calls for steroid testing
Chisoxfn replied to Balta1701's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Well Tiger is probalby the strongest guy on the tour, but I was talking to my buddy about this today and he's a scratch golfer whose been playing all his life. He's not at all a strong guy and he said the only thing matters is your swing plane, flexibility and well having long arms/height would help as well (since you'd have a bigger arc which would help you generate more swing speed). His avg drive is in the 260-270 range, which would put him a bit below the pro players but for cripe sakes he's a bit taller than me yet is probably 25 pounds less than me and weaker as well so I'd have some doubts as to how much strength would help (that said, he obviously has a far more efficient swing than me). He says roids wouldn't help, but than again he's not a doctor. Still, I'm sure someone would try it cause you never know if it could help. -
QUOTE(Steff @ Aug 28, 2006 -> 02:20 PM) Uhhh... Jason. Mrs BMac, i'm sure, knows all about Paulie behind the scenes so you should apologize for comparing her son to him.... You know that I love Paulie, my favorite player in baseball. Well aside from that MVP candidate we had last year, I think his name was....WILLIE HARRIS

QUOTE(Steff @ Aug 28, 2006 -> 02:10 PM) Jas, I think it's Brandon's "professional" attitude that rubs Oz the wrong way. Mike, please chime in with your thoughts also. No doubt. Brandon has handled the questions as best as possible about him moving into the rotation and everything. But I guess since he's not firey or anything like that it upsets Ozzie. Afterall, it seems like if you say stupid stuff you instantly become a member of Ozzie's inner circle. The thing i don't get is, Brandon seems to be the pitching version of Paulie, a pretty quiet guy whose very serious and professional but when he goes to the media usually (aside from some of the spats with Thomas) its handled with some class. Ozzie never handles the media with class.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 28, 2006 -> 11:40 AM) That doesn't matter, they're not fighting for the play........ oh wait a minute... They are overcoming a ton of injuries, so its a different situation.
-
QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 28, 2006 -> 09:24 AM) Because there's some things (again) that we all may not know about. I think your making some big assumptions here. The only thing going on is Ozzie being an idiot and I know at least a couple players are upset with there roles on the team. However, to the credit of the Sox things have stayed quiet. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 28, 2006 -> 10:06 AM) I don't think it's a problem to talk about short term and long term approaches. A business manager does both, so why not here? I don't think you force the issue. I'd rather have Walker be the one that is in on this meeting, especially if it involves offense. But he may very well have been there. That said I think its stupid to pigeon hole a guy, especially with the all around tools Anderson has. He could turn into the premiere centerfielder in baseball a few years from now. He'll never be a total offensive force (avg wise) but he could very well be a .280, 30, 100 type of guy while playing gold glove defense and that makes you a premiere CFer. Oh better yet, he could also probably steal 20 bases.
-
QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 28, 2006 -> 08:33 AM) Milkman, with all due respect (and this time, I seriously am not trying to yap at you or be a jerk), unless you know what's going on in that clubhouse every day, you can't possibly know what's best. We can ASSUME what's best all day long (which we're all good at around here). I think I have a pretty good guess as to why this is happening, but honestly, I'm not willing to put it down here on the board. But I will say this - I think that in September, we're going to be better off then some teams, because of the "Sunday lineups". Will it be enough to get us in the playoffs? Time will tell. Its not the Sunday lineup, its playing players in the wrong position and there is absolutely no excuse for that. And having our every day lineup just 6 times is real pathetic. Last season it wasn't that bad and you won't see a good team in baseball that does it. Yes its great to have your bench involved and we have a solid bench (aside from a backup CF/righty bat) but at one point a line gets drawn in the sand because the guys on the bench are there and not starting for a reason. Of course injuries to Paulie and Konerko played some factor in all of this. Oh and I'd have no problem if we saw a lot more of Gload, hell, just threaten it to maybe liven up Pods (who actually had his best game in a long long time on Sunday). QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 28, 2006 -> 08:55 AM) That's a good point. However, I still think there's some things that we're all not privy to which would be some reasons why this is happening. Just so I'm clear, I'm for BA over Mack - I agree with you all on that. However, I'm trying to say that there's a reason why BA is being 'protected' if you will. There isn't. Ozzie is putting BA in positions where he doesn't succeed. For example, always throwing him out against LHP which he hits substantially worse than RHP.

QUOTE(Jordan4life_2006 @ Aug 28, 2006 -> 01:42 PM) This offense goes from really good to a friggin' juggernaut if Pods comes out of his coma. If Pods can be the Pods of most of last year, we will be in good shape because his speed will help us win the games where our power is a little dry. So ya that would be outstanding. Obviously eventually the pitching will have to step up, but if Pods can get rolling and stealing sucessfully we should be able to find a way to hit ourselves into the playoffs. What happens at that point, I don't know, but the only positive is I don't see a real imposing pitching staff out there in baseball right now.

QUOTE(Steff @ Aug 28, 2006 -> 12:57 PM) You think Ozzie is the type of guy to be told how to manage the players...? I'm with you on this Steff. From everything I've heard about the situation (and this is one of the few areas I've heard some "inside" sort of stuff) is that Kenny is absolutely in love with Bmac (well maybe not in love, but he thinks very very highly of him, and that should be pretty obvious considering all the positive quotes he's had about Brandon) while Ozzie does not feel the same way about Brandon. My guess is something about Brandon rubs Ozzie the wrong way and Ozzie's the type of manager who seems to base a lot of things on how he likes a player and attitude sometimes matters. I'm not saying Brandon has a bad attitude, by all means I don't think he does, I think he's a constant professional but he may not be as loose as some of the other players and he tends to have a very serious demeanor and a little more "dry" humor so to speak and somewhere in there I think something rubs Ozzie the wrong way. I just know that Kenny is going to have to force Ozzie's hand next year and basically get rid of a starter so we know Brandon is the starter and that will happen. I just wish there was another person calling the shots. Ozzie got us the ring and I think him for that and he'll always be a legend in Chicago for that (just like Ditka is) despite the fact that both Ozzie and Ditka (despite having interesting personalities) were what I'd consider mediocre coaches/managers. QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 28, 2006 -> 01:59 PM) He looked much more decisive and confident. The first steal was all him, as he had a great jump (I'm still confused at the slide he attempted). The second steal was more due to a bad throw by the catcher. Redmond was the catcher, and the best thing you can say about his arm is that he's a good hitter. However, I don't care who is behind the plate. It's nice to see Pods try to get some swagger back. Definately, he seems very tentative and its like he is afraid to go or just hesitating a little more. Plus he's not really practicing his jump like he would last season when he'd get a nice secondary lead (he really doesn't do that as well this year). But hell, he finally stole some bases of someone not named Victor Martinez (cause it seems like most of his steals come when we play Cleveland).

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 28, 2006 -> 12:56 PM) Interesting about Pods, he had two beautiful bunt singles and a couple of steals this weekend... I wonder if he is finally ready to go now, or if this is just a tease? Were the steals impressive ones or were they just awful throws. I mean it looked like he had a 05 Pods like game yesterday.

QUOTE(danman31 @ Aug 28, 2006 -> 01:49 PM) Yeah considering his continued domination in Birmingham he's the one guy I would want on the list now. We made this about a month ago so some things have changed. Egbert would probably get the nod over a few guys, Perez would definitely be on, and Collaro and Brooks would probably be bumped. Collaro and Brooks were the bottom two, and were questionable selections, but the other two have been hot while Collaro has regressed in AA and Brooks continues to be average. The point remains that the list isn't impressive no matter what. Any way you look at it, we really dont have any upper echelon prospects right now and even some of our best prospects have some serious questionmarks and most of the list is full of questionmarks. Some guys have sick numbers, but there is a lot of question whether they have the all around ability to succeed at the major league level while others have the ability but haven't been able to put things together at the minor league level. The moral of this list is that our farm system BLOWS!!!!
-
Egbert is the guy that really put himself worthy of this list, probably relatively higher up but when we finished the list we didn't quite know. We really had a ton of debating and it was very hard to put together the list.

Game Thread: White Sox vs. Minnesota Twins
Chisoxfn replied to Chisoxrd5's topic in 2006 Season in Review
At least we have a pitcher out there that can control the running game. I really have no faith against the Twins when I know 2 of our guys really can't hold runners (although Vaz isn't horrible at it, Jose sucks at it but I guess on the bright side Freddy wasn't pitching against them). -
QUOTE(Chisoxrd5 @ Aug 27, 2006 -> 10:44 AM) I've been requesting Gload in LF for a while now. Prancing Pods is simply not doing anything better than Gload right now. With Pods not running anymore, its been pointless to have him out there. Gloads would be such a signficant upgrade over him. But bottom line, I want a new manager. I'm sick of tired of our motherf***ing manager putting this motherf***ing players in a position where they can't succeed (sorry about the cursing, but I love snakes on a plane). I've had it with him putting guys in a position that they can't succeed. Thats not what a good manager does, good managers do everything they can to always put there players in the best situations for them to succeed (and as a result the team succeeds). Ozzie's trashed Garland and Tracey verbally, called Bmac a piece of s*** (well pretty much stating that he isn't anything compared to what we have), he's made stupid jag comments in the media (from the Mariotti incident to all the stuff about stealing signs) and he's been a terrible manager (in terms of a baseball standpoint) yet the entire media still hoots and hollars and raves about how great he is. It really is a joke that no one in the baseball media has the guts to step up and call things like it really is (its too bad that the only one who might do it is Mariotti, but even if he were to write a spot on article, it wouldn't float over well just because of who he is).

QUOTE(Texsox @ Aug 27, 2006 -> 05:33 AM) When a Pollo Loco opens in your neighborhood, rejoice and be glad. I can't say more. Oh nice, I heard they were planning on expanding outside of California or the west (I was thinking they were just California, but maybe I'm wrong). That and Del Taco (for cheap mexican food Del Taco is way solid) are some of my personal favs, especially a few years back when I was eating a lot more fast food.

Good to hear you had a blast in Chicago. I think you sum things up nicely, I know your descriptions are pretty spot on to why I think its the best big city I've ever been to.

QUOTE(IlliniKrush @ Aug 27, 2006 -> 01:18 AM) Because i'm a vet, and i play that game random as hell with what i say and my antics. I mean it's not poker, it's a drinking game Alright, I need rules to this game, it sounds like fun.
-
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Aug 27, 2006 -> 01:06 AM) They've officially driven me to drinking a crap load but what are you going to do. I did happen to see AJ go down after a long AB with the tying run on 3rd, but I was kind of excited at that point that the Sox had gotten in that close.
-
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Aug 27, 2006 -> 12:55 AM) Well that was my goal tonight, didn't work out as planned. f***, I wasn't even watching the game. I turned it off after I got my b****ing out of the way in the game thread.

Did I ever mention that I love Gloadie

QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 26, 2006 -> 05:46 PM) I'm not saying what he said is true...but I'm also not saying that Ozzie doesn't favor some of his buddies. I can't wait until next year when McCarthy gets pulled at the first sign of trouble. Ozzie favors people but it has zero to do with race. But I assume you know that.
-
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 26, 2006 -> 05:45 PM) BMac shows our staff how it's done, just like he did last year. Man did he look good there. 7 pitches, 3 outs against the top of their order. Guess he isn't showing much rust yet. Don't worry, if he does good Ozzie will stay make some comment like "he's a piece of s*** compared to my other guys. Brandon isn't worthy to start in our amazing rotation. "
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 26, 2006 -> 05:44 PM) I want to see the Sox trade for Jimmy Rollins (one of our starters and a good prospect) and then try to sign Mathews Jr. to a 2/3 yr deal. My ideal lineup would be: Rollins, Mathews Jr, Dye, Thome, PK, Crede, Iguchi, AJP, Anderson That would be real nice.
