Well some guy on cold pizza just said there is no chance Oswalt gets traded. Ensberg to the Padres involving Linebrink may make some sense with Lidge than getting dealt.

Levine Reports Interest in Hawkins
This would be the type of guy that could come in while Bmac goes into the rotation or down into AAA and eventually moves into the rotation.

MLB Trade Deadline Thread 7/31
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jul 31, 2006 -> 09:38 AM) Why wouldnt they do a deal like that? Vaz belongs in the NL, especially the NL central. He could be a middle of the rotation guy in that division. You trade Vaz for someone, a reliever like Lidge, then move BMAC into the rotation and we already improved a ton. That type of deal makes them a little more likely to move a starter like Oswalt (although I think its horrificly stupid to do). If we are serious about moving McCarthy to the rotation than it may not be a bad idea.

Red Sox, Rockies, Padres
QUOTE(redandwhite @ Jul 30, 2006 -> 11:28 PM) Three way's are always good, whatever way you look at it. Boston Herald: The Red Sox are attempting to strike a three-way deal with the Rockies and Padres, with third baseman Mike Lowell perhaps shipped out of town and first baseman Ryan Shealy arriving here from the Rockies. The Sox also would presumably obtain a more-than-reputable starter. Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox starter David Pauley also was mentioned as part of the Red Sox’ package, although the right-hander was roughed up yesterday, hitting four batters and allowing five runs, three earned, in four innings in the PawSox’ 9-5 loss to Buffalo at McCoy Stadium. Is David Pauley different than Thomas Pauley? I ask that cause I know I"ve seen a Pauley pitch in the minors and the guy had an insane arm (threw in the upper 90's).

Miguel Tejada
First off, THe Orioles are complete idiots if thats true so I have my doubts as to whether thats true. Maybe they wanted more than Tejada, who knows. But if its true, get on the phone Kenny and offer them Brandon McCarthy and whoever else they want for Oswalt (if they also are intrigued with Garcia/Buehrle/Vazquez) than give them both. If its Buehrle/Bmac than thats it, no more, if its Garcia or Vazquez and McCarthy I'd still give up Broadway or Fields and a guy like Valido. Oswalt is an ace and would give us what we need and would help us more than just this year.

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Jul 30, 2006 -> 10:25 PM) I think Art Kuysner is higher on the BP depth chart than Hermy Ya, everything I've seen is that he has not impressed down in Charlotte. I wish he could, but it doesn't seem like he can.

Miguel Tejada
QUOTE(iamshack @ Jul 30, 2006 -> 10:13 PM) I can't believe the Stros were thinking of dealing Oswalt, Ensberg, and Everett to the O's for Tejada. Are you kidding me??? And the reason they came to their senses was because they were afraid the O's were going to deal Oswalt to the Rangers, which would be a PR nightmare. That's just insane. Where did you see that they actually included Oswalt in talks? That would be horribly stupid. And if they did even mention Oswalt, that deal should have been done. The O's should have grabbed Santana when they had the chance.

There will be no more trades for the Sox
The only move worth making is one that instills life into our starting rotation. No other move will matter, even if we acquired Tejada and Soriano.

The Andruw Jones Thread
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 30, 2006 -> 08:00 PM) I think I agree with you that we are basically at the "This pitching staff is ungodly talented, all we can do now is hope for the best" stage, but there's probably 1 more thing we can do to help them: Actually put a defense behind them that can get outs. Especially in that outfield. And that means playing Brian all the time, and maybe finding a replacement for Podsednik. All season long I've clammored that there is no reason (no matter how bad BA had been offensively) to allow Mack to play CF. Its just such a severe downgrade and no amount of hitting (unless Mack is Griffey in his prime or Pujols) would make up for the downgrade we have defensively (Mack may get a few more hits a week than BA) but Mack lets more than that drop as hits and thats not acceptable. Its not Mack's fault, the onus falls on our manager who has done a horrible job with this. I should also note that if it were up to me Pods would not be a part of the organization anymore (I don't dislike him, but he hurts this team in a lot of ways, although I'd be the first to admit if he started to steal like he did for most of last year, I'd be perfectly happy to live with the poorer defense).

The Andruw Jones Thread
I think Jones is a total superstar, but I don't see why we would need to replace Anderson. We don't need offense, sure we could use a legit left fielder and that will come in the off-season but the only thing this team can get that would turn us into a world series competitor is our current pitching staff to start pitching like they are capable of. I have major doubts though, since I don't think an entire staff can just decide not to stink. My only hope is that Vaz figures things out, Garland is good and Contreras is an ace and that we hope we can stay in the games that Buehrle/Garcia pitch.

Mackowiak
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 30, 2006 -> 07:28 PM) Well, the way I read/figure it, Ozzie has for some reason decided that Brian must sit at least 1 out of every 3 days and Mack must play CF that day. This costs us, roughly, 1 out of every 3 games, at least indirectly, as with today. In other words, the only way Ozzie will stop this is to remove one part of his calculation; if Brian is not there, Ozzie can not bench Brian. Therefore, if Brian were out of the way, and another CF option were there, perhaps the chain in Ozzie's head that requires Mack in CF 1 out of every 3 games might be broken. Yeah, it's stupid. But it's no where near as stupid as playing Mack in CF. I've told myself that same rational on a few ocassions already. I never thought too highly of BA when he was coming through the system but thats all changed since he joined the club. I really think he's the real deal and with all the progress he's making I have no idea why we continue to play a worthless defensive CF out there a few games a week. I understand sitting BA against tough righties, but Bruce Chen (a sucky lefty)??? I don't follow, especially when our pitching has sucked horribly and we need to do all we can to not give up runs because its a lot better to minimize other teams runs than to have to score 10 to win.

Do we have any WWE fans here?
I watched back in the Stone Cold days when I was in high school and was also a fan of WCW for a while. But I haven't watched the stuff in a long long time, although I will stop the channell if I see it on but I no longer recognize a lot of the guys.

7/30 Games
QUOTE(JimH @ Jul 30, 2006 -> 06:02 PM) Jason, I'd thought of it a while ago but need to credit Bruce Levine for bringing it up today. In order for this to work, they need an arm to be the long/swingman ... more effective than a 22 yr. old Brandon McCarthy, who needs to get his rhythm. All young pitchers do. So it's incumbent on KW to acquire an arm who can be better in that role than Brandon. And KW may not find a deal to his liking because as we've all commented, the price for mediocrity is very high on this trade market. Ya, the question is do they like Tracey enough to consider bringing him up as the long man (with MacDougall here, the club could probably swing things where Tracey is only in long man roles which usually aren't key to a club's success) while Brandon goes down. I say that because I don't see the price of a reliever as being very affordable so unelss there is some guy that doesn't have much trade value who Kenny likes that he can bring in. I know the Yanks are talking about Roberto Hernandez, but I wouldn't be a major proponent of that since he hasn't been as good as of late.

7/30 Games
QUOTE(JimH @ Jul 30, 2006 -> 05:37 PM) The White Sox need innings tomorrow, they will rely on Contreras. Very interesting that Guillen is sticking to his guns re: his position players. He likes the 14 he's got. If he wants to stick with that, then that means they might tweak the pitching staff. That means either a DL stint for somebody or a guy gets sent down. If not, then they think they have all the necessary pieces. Personally I think they need some help. Vazquez's problems not to be understated, but McCarthy had a perfect chance to show he could eat up innings yesterday. He didn't. He got cuffed around. What does that tell you ... he is not in a rhythm. Therefore get him into a rhythm. Let him show he can dominate AAA hitters this year (last yr. doesn't count, "this is 2006" as SoxTalk says). If he is lights out, then it's bad news and so sorry for whatever starter is stinking up the joint at the time. Meanwhile, for this to work ... they need another arm. Either via trade or via someone from the system coming up and being reasonably effective. Sean Tracey isn't showing it, and Montero hasn't been great either. It's trade time. Wow, interesting idea, moving Bmac down and getting him ready for the rotation in the minors. I hadnt thought about it, but it would be a way for the team to motivate its current 5 starters while getting Brandon ready to hopefully do his thing. I think he needs innings and starts to get stuff together and get himself into a legit rhythm. He's been solid out of the pen, but he has not looked as sharp as he did last year at any piont this year and I think it stems from him being in the pen.

There will be no more trades for the Sox
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 30, 2006 -> 05:41 PM) At this point, I'm still really scared to stand pat. This team just does not look like a championship team. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like one because it can't pitch, and the only guy out there who can help with that would be a terrible acquisition (Zito). We can't go out and acquire a new pitching staff, either the starters turn it around and we do good or they don't and some changes will be made.

There will be no more trades for the Sox
QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 30, 2006 -> 04:07 PM) I'll actually be surprised if we don't make another trade for a reliever, especially after what happened this wknd. I think we have the arms here so unless we are going to go out and swap starters with someone I really don't see us doing anything.

Hey I am back on Soxtalk, and got a question...
Personally speaking, I wouldn't deal Cotts for Gonzalez. I realize Cotts is in a funk right now but this is a guy that the club has control of for a few more years who has a real sneaky fastball and is really pretty much unhittable when on (just look at last year). He's been good for most of this year but its evident he needs to work a bit more on developing some secondary pitches and if that all goes well he'll be back to being one of the premiere relievers in baseball.

Outfield Defense
QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 29, 2006 -> 05:38 PM) How is it better than the Angels? We'd have the worst LF and CF defensively in baseball if Mack's in CF. I also guess I view Dye's defense differently than you. I'm not sure if he's hurt, but he seems extremely slow out there in the last 30-40 games. Vlad sucks on defense, but at least teams respect his arm and don't always try to take the extra base on him. Doesn't Juan Rivera have a terrific arm? You see the Angels more than I do though, so I respect your opinion. Figgins is worse than Mack and when Erstad was out there he was also worse than Mack (Ersty isn't even a shell of what he once was in CF) while Vladdy is as bad as it gets. Rivera plays some left, but he's also in CF a lot and GA still plays a good deal of left field and the Angels management has been quoted that he'll likely go back to playing there if they get a DH (which is what the plan is) and Anderson is right there with Dunn as the worse defensive left fielder (those two guys are the only two worse than Pods with Manny ranking just ahead of Pods). So: Dye >>> Vladdy (who is horrid) Mack >>> Figgins or Rivera (I know its funny to say cause Figgy is really fast but he gets terrible jumps; not necessarily his fault since he isn't an everyday CFer) Juan Rivera >>> Pods >>> GA

Didn't see a thread on this, so cheers to the Sox for scoring enough runs to win this thing. It wasn't pretty, but it is our first post-ASB winning streak

Outfield Defense
QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 29, 2006 -> 04:32 PM) In games that Anderson's on the bench, we have the worst outfield defense in baseball. Even with Anderson in the field, we have the worst throwing defense in baseball. Our LF should be a DH in A ball. Your nuts, our outfield defense is still >>> the Angels every day of the week and twice on Sundays (w/Mack). With Anderson its good (Dye is average to above avg, BA is above avg, Pods is one of the worse in the game).
