Official Re-sign Paul Konerko Thread
Just because they ask, doesn't mean it will happen. Paulie asked for 5yr 75, he won't get that. 5yr 65 is the most the Sox will give him, imo.

QUOTE(timotime @ Nov 19, 2005 -> 06:32 AM) well, its obvious who's wearing the big daddy pants in this forum. sorry my posts arent good enough for you. jees. If your going to post something, post something with substance, otherwise don't post. Its pretty clear, no need to come in and just make a stupid comment. If you want to comment on a players ineffectiveness or if you disagree with something, please put together an intelligent argument because that adds to the discussion. One liners from a poster that does nothing but one liners do not add to the discussion. Take this as a warning and hopefully you'll improve your posting style or at the very least sit back and read more.

QUOTE(JimH @ Nov 18, 2005 -> 07:06 PM) Good Lord man, put the Giles drum away. You have only mentioned this about 100 times already, he is gonna cost a 3 year deal at probably $25 million minimum. Meaning, not modestly priced. Giles would be a great fit, problem is he's going to play in Los Angeles (Dodgers want him) and to play in the midwest it would take 3/30 minimum.

JUAN PIERRE
QUOTE(beck72 @ Nov 19, 2005 -> 04:34 AM) Ozzie knows all about Pierre. If he thinks adding Pierre [at the expense of Rowand probably, who'd have to be dealt to another team to make room] would make the sox a better team, then a few things would be clear: 1] Pierre's offense [ability to get onbase, steal bases, hit near .300] would help the sox score more runs on a consistent basis 2] Pierre's speed in the OF would take away more hits then his arm will give up 3] Pierre and Pods in the same OF wouldn't weaken the sox overall defense I hate giving up Rowand, but I think if the Sox were able to give up Rowand for a Thome like presence (a trade centering around Rowand from the Phils perspective) and than Marte and maybe a prospect for Pierre (and considering Pierre's salary and coming off a down-season I don't know if they'd have to give up much more than Marte). The Sox would revamp there offense with more speed, but they'd also have more power. On top of that, I can't say I've seen Pierre enough in center field, but he does cover pretty good ground and can make some nice plays. I don't know how he compares with Pods at getting jumps (I sure hope he's better) but I wouldnt' worry too much about his arm as long as he is able to get solid reads on the ball and use his speed to get a good jump. I can definately see Pierre making sense on the South Side. Problem is his salary, but that always means he could come here cheap in terms of what the Sox give up. Afterall, this is a guy who steals 50 bases a year and has hit over .300 in 3 of his 5 full major league seasons. The other 2 years he hit .287 and .276. Here is his avg season: .305 AVG, .355 OBP, 22 2B, 9 3B, 47 RBI, 51 SB (18 CS, 73% success rate), 43 BB, 40 K (you got to like the fact he doesn't strike out much).

QUOTE(JoshPR @ Nov 18, 2005 -> 09:02 PM) Assists numbers can be misleading.Of course manny lead the league cause he played the ball well of the Monster. His arm is average at best. Now Ichiro and Vlad's numbers are down cause of no one taking chances. If you wanna talk about cannons. I got 3 in mind. Jesse Barfield, Dwight Evans and Roberto Clemente As far as Vladdy goes, the smart teams run on him. His arm is great, but the odds of him throwing a good throw are slim to none. I definately appreciate all that Vladdy has done for the Angels, but one of the things he's yet to figure out is to hit his cutoff man and keep his throws down. Although on any given play he can make an amazing play with his arm. Manny gets all his assists because the scouting report is to run all day long on him so he gets a lot of opportunities to make throws. He does happen to play the monster really well (when he barehands and fires) which helps.

Flying Under The Radar
QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Nov 18, 2005 -> 11:27 PM) I was just noticing your avatar. Congrats. I'll be rooting for Mexico's early successes and eventual loss...hopefully not another loss to USA, who undoubtedly has their number. I can't wait for the World Cup. It begins in January right?

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Nov 18, 2005 -> 04:12 PM) Wow. The four teams left in the "Gaurdians classic" are impressive. Texas - ranked 2nd and 3rd in the polls Kentucky - ranked 8th and 10th in the polls West Virginia - ranked 14th and 15th in the polls Iowa - ranked 20th in both polls All games to be played in Kansas City. I'm assuming ESPN will be televising all of the games? I sure hope so.

28-0 Iowa, still in the 2nd quarter. Merloni is out and injured and thus far Minnesota has had nothing rush wise. They have been able to muster up some passing yards and get into scoring position twice. They missed one field goal and than had a failed 4th down inside the 20. Iowa is really playing strong this week and the 2nd half of last week. I'm really really getting bummed about there blown games against NU and Michigan. As much as I've slammed them I've finally got to watch a couple straight Iowa games (I love ESPN televising Big 10 games) and they are well balanced offense (Young is the man rushing the ball). As I type this Iowa gets an interception (Chad Greenway) and brings it to the Minnesota 5.

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Nov 18, 2005 -> 02:56 PM) Did Fresno already get an offer from the Liberty? -- That's a longshot anyway. It would be making the best out of the worst. ISU vs. UCLA would be a winnable game, but I'll belive the Clones in the Holiday bowl when I see it. Oh man, if ISU plays UCLA they are gonna get drubbed. I've been slamming UCLA a lot this year, but I've came away really impressed with there resiliency after that loss to Arizona. Of course with ISU's defense and UCLA's lock of a defense, anything is possible, but its going to be a hell of a feat to shut down the UCLA offense.

Blockbuster Move -- Boston & Florida
QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Nov 18, 2005 -> 10:20 PM) Well from Florida fans, I hear that they will be keeping Cabrera at 3B and moving Blalock to 1B once they move Delgado. Who knows though? That would be foolish. Blalock is a pretty solid 3rd baseman.

Blockbuster Move -- Boston & Florida
QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Nov 18, 2005 -> 10:19 PM) Delgado available? I think not If they are willing to deal Josh Beckett, who turns 26 next year, and Lowell while his value is at its lowest, for Blalock, who is solid but not spectacular, and a stud pitching prospect, then I think it shows they are clearly building around Cabrera and Delgado. I don't think so and that is clearly a horrible move by the Marlins on a sidenote.

What Do You Expect?
QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Nov 18, 2005 -> 03:22 PM) Can you speak to his "stuff?" That's pretty encouraging seeing the minds of Baseball America think the kid doesn't know how to pitch. His stuff good enough to make that jump? In my opinion no. I don't think he has great stuff, although he has the ability to throw 5 pitches, none of them well. Good arm, but the guy wasn't a pitcher when they drafted him (I realize he was a starter at UCLA) but he's no pitcher. It was a bad pick and I've said it since day one. I hope he proves me wrong cause he's supposed to have pretty good work ethic.

Cubs, Sox in pursuit of Scott Eyre
QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Nov 17, 2005 -> 09:08 PM) 1)He's overpaid. 2)Up until last year, he was a mediocre reliever at best. 3)He's not a young prospect who finally got it. He's an older guy who had a lucky year. I say he has more of a year like Esteban Loaiza had his 2nd year here rather than a year like last year. I wouldn't knock the move if they didn't overpay so much. For that money, I would've just upped it a bit more to go after Ryan. Did you see what Loiaza did with Washington this year? He pitched pretty darn well. That said I agree he's overpaid (Eyre).

Cubs, Sox in pursuit of Scott Eyre
QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Nov 17, 2005 -> 08:05 PM) I'm not so sure now. This is straight from Cubs.com: http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/new...t=.jsp&c_id=chc This could be the worst reliever contract in the history of the MLB. Then my guess is it turns into the 3rd year option has a pretty big buyout. It would be assinine for them to give Eyre 5.5 million a year for 2 years. Really assinine.

Cubs, Sox in pursuit of Scott Eyre
QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 17, 2005 -> 06:21 PM) Perez played pretty solid last year. But I do agree the Sox have overpaid for some guys and they are definately putting a lot of faith in Eyre continuing to improve. Eyre has a pretty good arm for a lefty (good pop on the FB) but aside from that he's not worth what they gave him. I don't know what the guaranteed figure is (I know its a 2 year deal w/3rd year option) but regardless it looks like the Cubs overpaid a bit, but thats to be expected with a lefty reliever, especially in a thin FA market.

Cubs, Sox in pursuit of Scott Eyre
QUOTE(timotime @ Nov 17, 2005 -> 03:53 PM) agreed. when you are talking about bang for buck, eyre is not where it's at. i would honestly stick with marte rather than throw big money that could contribute to getting us a heavy bat. Thats why Marte is a guy you don't trade unless you get some good major league pieces for him. Holy crap, as I type this I hear Don't Stop Believing on King of the Hill. This song will always have a special memory to me.

Cubs, Sox in pursuit of Scott Eyre
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 17, 2005 -> 02:35 PM) Heres the best part: Not only are the cubs fans loving this move, they are begging for AJ Burnett as well. Wow, they could easily take the all time MRI record with that rotation. I don't get why everyone's knocking the Eyre move. Just becuase the Cubs made a move, doesn't mean its a bad one. Scott Eyre was really good last year and if he pitches like he did this past season, he's definately a great pickup, even if they did pay a mill or year too much (and if he pitches like he did last year, 3 million a year is more than fair).

Aaron Rowand
QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Nov 17, 2005 -> 07:45 PM) Are you Bruce Levine? No, JD actually knows what he's talking about

Aaron Rowand
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Nov 17, 2005 -> 07:09 PM) So you could show me a source that says Larry Beinfest or anyone with the Marlins for that matter have mentioned Rowand, Contreras and Marte by name? Kalapse, I'd take JD's words pretty strongly. Not saying its 100%, but if he heard it, it is its from someone he knows pretty well whose tied into baseball. He's definately one of the people I'd consider a Soxtalk source.

Aaron Rowand
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Nov 17, 2005 -> 07:04 PM) Hard to do that without tampering. They probably came to them in trade talks for Burnett and proclaimed those 3 guys as players they would be interested in.

Biggest dump in the majors
QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Nov 16, 2005 -> 10:35 PM) Do Dodger fans really all leave in the 7th inning. If thats true they have to be one of the worse fanbases in all of baseball no matter how many show up at the begining. If they are losing yes, if they are winning no. They still draw 3.6 million fans so the fan base is strong. They usually arrive a little late and West Coast fans tend to leave the game when their team is trailing.

Biggest dump in the majors
QUOTE(chitownsportsfan @ Nov 16, 2005 -> 10:17 PM) As a side note, my father, who is way more knowledgable about stadiums than I am, has said that his trip to Pacbell was the best stadium he's every experienced. I'm curious to here if anyone else has been there, and what they have to say about it. AMAZING. Definately ranks tops on my list. Petco, Camden and the Jake are next on my list.
