Dalquist and Jared "4 rounds" Kelly from that Birmingham pen are also R5. They're having decent years statistically, although I have no idea if their stuff warrants optimism and/or need for protection.
-
I like the Flaherty comp. What about a Fedde comp? Houser's a little light on Ks and doesn't have Fedde's story to explain the marked improvement. A month ago I said no way to that comp., but Houser's nearing that territory.

Sox don't need Rojas even if he was good. Same with the OF: At least 2 of Tauchman, Slater and Taylor need to hit the road. They may be tradeable (not for much but perhaps for something), but that's secondary. We have a backlog of OFs in Charlotte (Julks, Fletcher, DeLoach, et al) that need a final look in the majors. And Getz traded for all 3 of those guys so I would think he'd want a final look. As for Capra, at least he had a discernable skill: defense, including SS.
-
It should have been Rojas. He serves no purpose on this team and his play is abysmal. Still should be. Getz needs to stop with the carnival act.

I can tell you how the Sox can fix it: have a steady pipeline of young players, which is mostly via a good farm system (along with some churn). I’ve been following for 50 years and the only period in which they were consistently good is also the only period in which they had a good farm system: c. 1990-2010. The idea that the Sox have struggled because JR wouldn't spend $ on the team is off-base. And you don’t need a DH per se, but you need a position player who hits well enough to DH, usually an extra OF or corner OF.
-
That's true, but we are still unsettled at 2 IF, 3 OF and DH and bench and depth. There's a point where we will have to slow down the churn (although we should never completely stop the churn), but we aren't there yet.
-
I didn't realize that you had done a 2nd mock. I was still looking at the Hall mock. sign me up for Carlson. Anyway, Teel the younger looks interesting for round 4.
-
I take it that you see these pitchers as a level below Smith from lasty draft? From your piece (btw link in your post above is bad): “15 homer potential in the future but his aggressive style comes with some swing and miss concerns.” Sounds modest.
-
Rojas. Capra can play SS.
-
Oh I've talked about it plenty. It was worse if for no other reason than what in the world is a 73-win team doing trading 4 young players (when it has so few to begin with) for a 1 year rent in the first place? There really was no realistic scenario in which that trade could possibly have had a positive outcome for the Sox. And Hahn was strutting after that trade.
-
In this scenario, the available SS look like reaches to me. Either take a college pitcher (if we passed on Jac for a college pitcher, we could pass on one of the 2nd tier SS); or, even better, go underslot (Jace, e.g. risky, yes but we need hitters; or a different HS SS). A good HS SS should be there for our 2nd pick; plus we’ll be able to use each of our 2-10 picks.

How has it been a disaster for the Sox? A lot of middle infielders turn into excellent outfielders. That’s one reason why teams load up on them in the draft. Thank goodness Vargas can play multiple positions.
-
Leasure has a big arm- he's just wild. Way too soon to throw him away. Are any of these infielders (Sosa, Montgomery, even Gonzalez, whomever) athletic enough to play some OF? OF is where we have zilch arriving anytime soon.

Luis Robert trade thread: La Pantera stays.
GreenSox replied to ChiSoxFanMike's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Hard to believe, but Robert has an .870 OPS against Left-handed pitching. That's sellable. -
Based on the need to maximize Wilson's trade value over the next month. Closes have 30-40% of the value of a tor starter and keep their form longer. Prefer a Skenes to a Mason Miller.
-
Wilson can close. He’s having a good year and saves will gussy-up his trade value. Just get Taylor ready to start next season. Too bad Capra can’t hit, even just a little. Nifty glove.
-
So what is the purpose of him in Charlotte (while Taylor Just bypassed it).
-
the one it looks like we got burned on is Schultz. It's alarming. But taylor needs to start long-term. Hear from Mason Miller lately?
-
Had he gone to college, he would have been drafted in 2023, so while he is in a prolonged lull, he’s not behind really. Charlotte stats can be so misleading, but the Ks are alarming. I just wonder about bat speed and how his swing and approach look. Hard to count on any prospect, but don’t give up too quickly either. In 2024, Phillies’ Abel had a 1.8 WHIP in 100 AAA innings…. Now one of the most promising young arms in the majors.
-
When the bar to clear is the incumbent's sub-.500 OPS, the jump isn't that high.
-
I like the Gamble part of the equation. The slot for #10 is $6.2 and it drops all the way to $4.2 at #20. Work a deal with someone expecting to go 15-30 instead and the Sox will have all sorts of power in the rest of the draft. And the 10-20 talent seems clustered anyway. Now if Parker or Carlson fall, it's a different story - those 2 seem closer to #10 talent,
-
He's got some stones. Damn.
-
Which could be avoided via underslot at 10. And then the Sox can take full advantage of drafting first in rounds 2-20.
-
Thanks for posting the Joe Doyle recap. I like his draft approach. particularly underslot in round 1. If they can't get Carlson or Parker, the others don't seem that distinguishable from a player the could get at 20. And the value may be at college pitcher. Would also prevent the dreaded (to me) mult-round punting.
