  1. Or trade down (go underslot); I'm not sure they can do that effectively though. The trouble with the SS is that the good hitters seem to hit well "for a shortstop." So yea, they can play anywhere but they don't have the corner hit-tool to bring with them. I'm just going by the write-ups and descriptions; perhaps some of these guys really can hit. So Jo Jo can really hit; but he won't end up at SS. So it's unclear whether he can really hit for a SS or if he can really hit for, say, a RF.
  2. I read that as "we'll take Robert's salary off of your hands only if you throw in Sosa." Yikes!
  3. I hope Vargas can get back on track because we seem to be capped at 2 runs without him. Robert pulling a Lazarus would help too.
  4. Pierce seems like someone who should be drafted around #20; so he's a reach unless they can go c. $2 mill underslot, which l seriously doubt they can pull off. h this draft seems bereft of hit-tool, so I can see why Irish would rise. If the Sox are going to go a little under slot, go with Jace: a risk with real upside.
  5. I wanted them to pick Jac (I was a late convert), but my number 1 wish was to not pick Smith. I was surprised when Smith was picked. Hope it all works out,
  6. Would seem so for #10 money. But he would fit if you pay #20 money, which will leave room to go overslot in several rounds, without punting.
  7. That moves the equivalent of: R2: pick 10 to pick 11. -1 R2: Pick 44 to 31. +13 R3. Pick 76 to pick 49. +27 Cost: $1,461M > Cap. That would require some major punting: rounds 6-10 (and that would still be a tad short). On the other hand, if you go $4.5M at pick 10, you basically move down to around 18 with the same round 2 and 3 benefits. No punting required. And in this draft, 10-25 or so (or maybe even wider) seem somewhat fungible. And of course either way, you have to count on the #31 or better player being available at 44 and the number 49 or better player being available at 76.
  8. He probably could be in Chicago (along with most of Birmingham's pen). But, then again, what's the rush? And the Chicago pen, such as it is, is for sale.
  9. TLR won 93 and was around .500 in 2022 when he stepped away. Grifol earned his own era.
  10. So I guess I would ask whether Jo Jo is athletic enough for CF; or whether he hits well enough for a corner position to draft at #10. Overall, the trade-down (underslot) option looks appealing. Witherspoon's brother looks interesting for later rounds.
  11. this is a sign-to-peddle situation. Guy throws 97. Good move. Same with Houser -starter who hits 95 (mea culpa on him). 2 excellent moves.
  12. The team is clearly improving and he’s brought more outside talent into front office in a 18 months than his predecessor did in a decade. And the idea that he’s not trying is just silly. From Rule 5 to the July trading period, he’s a pack-mule compared to his predecessor. Things are looking up and the Sox are fun to watch.
  13. Law does some scouting himself, but mostly he gathers and accumulates information and opinions from sources throughout the league; Getz was his Sox source in the Hahn years. My main wish for 2024 draft was to not draft a pitcher, especially Smith, who looked like a reliever to me (didn’t pitch deep into games in college, among other reasons). I hope I’m wrong about Smith and certainly could be. But the walks are troubling.
  14. They are unlikely to get anything for Perez, but they should get something for Houser. Good teams couldn’t take a chance on him until they knew that he’d be effective. Now they know, so now they pay. Stop trading on other teams’ terms. No more rule-V “prospects” …the other team’s 40-man is not our problem.
  15. I'd like to see our good pitching prospects bypass Charlotte.
  16. Thaiss was useful to this team; and there are several teams with worse backup catchers than thaiss. Hard to see the reason to give him away like this.
  17. Oh the poor thing! But I'm relieved that he can love again
  18. The solution is mostly in Birmingham, and otherwise internal. Some of the guys in this pen would be fine in the bottom of a good pen. The solution is not to start draft college relievers or to focus free-agent resources, whatever they may be, on relief pitching.
  19. Leasure’s got a good arm. Still learning. Defense behind him was less than exemplary. Probably shouldn’t be closer yet, but the best relievers are still in Birmingham.
  20. I understand that the bench has to play some and I've seen worse Sunday lineups. But why is Capra batting in the 9th?
  21. Assuming that the continued presence of Slater et al on the roster is to be traded in July, he should be up soon. Sox are in no position to give away players who might help.
  22. To me, it was the lack of a real farm system. Hard to develop depth, shore up weaknesses, have any staying power at all without one. This crew seems to be trying to build something. On another matter, kudos to whoever found Vasil. I assume he’ll be in what should be an interesting rotation next season.
  23. Sosa was a good minor league hitter; it's taken him a while to figure out the majors but it looks like he has. Trade rumors doesn't know what they are talking about.
  24. Rojas to DFA. He shouldn't be on his team in the first place. Sox moved Vargas to first and Elko to Charlotte to accommodate him.
  25. Seems like some Birmingham pitchers are airplanes flying a circular pattern around the airport just waiting and waiting. What’s next for Taylor and Dalquist? They really can’t send them to Charlotte. Nastrini is star of the day in Charlotte.
