  1. The Reynaldo contract is reasonable to me. This Lynn contract, on the other hand, suggests that the Sox will have to undertake some reclamation projects. Soroka is one. And another is our very own Kopech. Trading Kopech WOULD be selling at low value.
  2. Braves got a good deal. 3/$26 with the big money deferred a year v. 3/$24 for Graveman 2 years ago. Reynaldo is younger and better; accounting for inflation, probably a tad cheaper too. I wonder if the Braves don't view the Sox relieves as under-coached.
  3. His 3 fWAR didn't make sense to me given a modest OPS, lack of power and high BAPIP; and it wasn't inflated via defense either (like, say, 'Eaton's 6 WAR was). He does take his walks. And then add injury on top. Not a centerpiece by any means.
  4. They won't get full ace-value for Cease, but should be able to get #2 value. Trade him.
  5. Outman was a 4+ WAR player last year. That’s just not realistic to expect him for Cease.
  6. Sox need outfielders. Colas is the only real prospect, and he's on the Padro Sh list. Sox have Ramos, Montgomery and a bunch on the 40-man re infielders. Catching is really a defensive position and you can find those guys; a lot of the hyped catching prospects are hyped more for their hitting than their receiving. And of course, can always use pitching; but so can the Dodgers, so a bit leery of the pitching prospects.
  7. If not these specific players, players with similar profiles, would have been available for free. But as long as the Sox actually like some of these specific players - and this isn't like one of those grab-bags of stamps that I used to get as a kid, this is a fine return for Bummer. They do need to improve the ML team, and at the every least they'll get a SS out of this deal. The opportunity cost, which, I suppose, is a modest prospect with upside, is also modest.
  8. The Soria acquisition was one of those 40-man deals; but then he dumped him for....Medeiros! Actually, each of Hahn's deadline deals this past August would fit easily into his top 10. He did a good job clearing out some riffraff in exchange for some legitimate prospects.
  9. I forgot one: Swarzak was a pretty good scrap heap acquisition. Hahn then traded him at the deadline for....Cordell!
  10. Hahn got one Cordell in a deadline trade when he had leverage. At least Getz got 5 of them. And none of Hahn's Cordells turned out to be any help at all. Maybe Evan Marshall was helpful for a while. Let's see if Getz can do better. The bar is low.
  11. And the Sox certainly have the room for it. A 100-win team’s trash is a 60 win team’s treasure. Might get a couple of nuggets out of this.
  12. I thought that this was interesting. Cease worth 1 WAR alone just on holding runners.
  13. Twitter Summary: Cardinals: Brendan Donovan plus a low-level prospect RedSox: Verdugo plus 2 low-level prospects Reds: India, straight up.
  14. You're right. Too much protection takes away roster flexibility. I'll settle down.
  15. Even shots in the dark are worth protecting more than some players on the 40 man. Haseley? come on.
  16. Are they really keeping Foster, Cronin, Peralta et al; and both Romy and Remillard and AAAA Haseley on the 40 man? They don't have higher-upside players to protect? Or want room for higher upside players that others don't protect?
  17. Just look at the list of pitchers. Who would be really missed? Scholtens is the best of the bunch. Maybe there's a name on there that I overlooked; and Tanner Banks, a personal favorite because he throws strikes, is on the list. The article talks about decisions on players like Sosa, but he should be protected way before this cast of characters. Tanner Banks Declan Cronin Matt Foster Deivi Garcia Edgar Navarro Nicholas Padilla Luis Patino Sammy Peralta Yohan Ramirez Jesse Scholtens Alex Speas
  18. Since the end of the season, the following players have left: Grandal Anderson Thompson Frazier Andrus Shaw Urena Hendriks That's 8, and yet the 40 man sits at 35. Have they added players since the end of the season? Anyway, this 40 man is such that there should be 0% risk of losing a player with upside in the Rule 5 Draft.
  19. Yeah, Cards fans want to send us Donovan, who can't hit lefties; and Reds fans India, who can't defend.
  20. When the Pirates traded Cole to the Astros, Cole was a year or 2 removed from his peak in Pittsburgh. Still, they got a good haul on paper, although only Musgrove turned out to do anything (I think it was just him). Cease seems to be in a similar position.
  21. Brooks Boyer may be worse at his job than Hahn was. The org. simply doesn't care.
