Indeed...that's why we're making room for Slater!
-
Yeah, there is that aspect....this is quite the collection of position players.
-
Keep Palacios...he's growing on me ...he takes his walks.
-
Nah, it's interesting. It's also a handy one-page view of the early draft board. Lot of Shortstops.
-
Even then, Roland Hemond wasn't pushed out until the mid 1980s.

Is this mock from one of the publications, or from a group that you're involved with? I like Witherspoon for a pitcher, but he seems to be rocketing up past the Sox

Your top 5 position players drafted by the White Sox since 2010: 1. Marcus Semien, 2011 R6, 45.5 bWar 2. Tim Anderson, 2012 R1, 15.3 bWar 3. – tie- Adam Engel, 2013 R19, 3.3 bWar 4. – tie - Alex Call, 2016 R3, 3.3 bWar 5. Nick Madrigal, 2019 R1, 3.2 bWar On the pitching side, they've drafted 2 aces, 2 near-aces (Rodon, Bassitt) , and a couple of relievers. But it's not like the Guardians have done much better: it's pretty much Lindor and Kwan (and a lot of good trades and international signings).

That's kind of a function of losing 120, which is to a large extent a function of being in a much worse starting spot. Both rebuilds had 3 major trades at their outset. In the last rebuild, all 3 looked great right off the bat. Then add Abreu, Anderson and Robert, and it was easy to see a good young team coming together. This time, the first 2 trades (Cease and Fedde) looked less than impressive at the time (and still do). The third looked like a homerun but it didn't have the sizzle that made headlines (no top 10 prospects or even a top 3 RedSox prospect). But the farm is organically better (i.e. this farm has more pre-trade talent than the last one did) and, for better or worse, that's what will drive this rebuild. Anyway, a lot of turnarounds aren't noticed until they've already happened. There are usually a few signs if one looks hard enough....and there are a few surrounding this bunch.
-
The genesis of the problem then as it is now is poor drafting/international signings and a lot of clowning and unwarranted arrogance (a team with their poor draft record acting like they're the smartest guys in the room with the reaching and punting e.g.). Maybe things have improved - won't know or a while. Anyway, at this point, they seem to waste resources on niche players: the great fielding SS who can't hit; great fielding OF; last year it was Maldanado, the catcher that pitchers love, but who can't hit. I These are the kind of players the good teams sign to top-off the roster. The fast guy who can't get on base fits this category. They have no use to the Sox who should be in audition mode - either for the Sox or to peddle to other teams. Right now they need to figure out how to get Lee up so that he can be moved. I don't even think the current pen is all that hopeless...too much pressure is put on them due to lack of offense that mistakes are magnified. There are some guys to trade and I hope they do it well.

I get letting Workman go- but not if you're keeping Amaya around. That's just ridiculous. I think Getz has made some really good moves that he doesn't get a lot of credit for. A lot of these are significant and will be long-term beneficial. But his management of the 27 has just been bizarre and has depressed the win total; unnecessarily, imv.
-
I think the GM absolutely should make the pick, just like in the NFL, NBA, etc.. He obviously should have the scouting director and staff at his side, but the GM is the one who builds the roster. Getz has moved on from a lot of people in the org., but he has kept Shirley. Not sure if that's significant or not.

Amaya's OPS is .241; his career OPS is .341. Exactly who is over his head? We have Taylor, a great defender with a .264 OBP. They had to make room for the great Josh Rojas. Oooh Tauchman's coming back soon- need to make room! We aren't getting anything of value for these guys in July. None will be back next year. We have more interesting, higher potential, if not better players in Charlotte. What is the point of all of this?

Luis Robert trade thread: La Pantera stays.
GreenSox replied to ChiSoxFanMike's topic in Pale Hose Talk
As does Tyrone Taylor, the CF he would presumably replace. I know it won't be a ton. But the Sox are already loaded with likely utility infielders, AAAA outfielders, and Rule 5 guys. Much prefer some A Ball lottery tickets. There were overpays at the deadline last year for players having poor seasons with nowhere near his upside (although mostly on the pitching side). -

Winning is more enjoyable, and the Sox need more talent to win. The only way they seem to be able to get real talent is from other teams (maybe Elko and the starters will break the spell). Frankly, they should see what they can get for Shane Smith. Probably not enough. But if some team offered a Crochet-like package.... -

Those guys are utility infielders. I'd try to get someone like Boston Baro - a guy deep in the minors but who could turn out to be something. I understand that Robert's numbers are poor so he's risky; but he's also high-reward. Some team will pay for him. -
Well Law just said that he fixed his swing. Law's early 2024 rankings had Caleb at around #20; by the time of the draft, he had dropped him way down to the 50s, with the changing/inconsistent swing the reason. In that context, the comment that he fixed his swing is significant imv.

Law had a hopeful comment about him in a recent chat.

Boston could use better backup catching. Maybe package him and a streaking Vaughn. -
Sox claim RHP Yoendrys Gómez; release Greg Jones
GreenSox replied to ChiSox59's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I think a couple of them are in the current rotation - they'll be moved either to the pen or to another team. As for luck, well what is Shane Smith? To a large extent, the more smart decisions and hard work you put in, the "luckier" you get. (the last regime barely bothered to use Rule 5 at all in their final rebuild). On the other hand, how could the Brewers, an org. that knows what it's doing, especially on the margins, miss on a pitcher like this? And, yes it was a choice not a "no room at the inn" situation, as they made a Rule 5 pick themselves. -
Good draft to pick first in rounds 2-20. Plenty of bats without reaching.
-
I can only presume that we would have taken Witt, given the opportunity. Hagen Smith should be good - I doubt he flops. Realistically in 2019, some suggested that we take Abrams...he or Riley Greene would have been helpful. I just remember at the time that I absolutely did not want the Sox to take Bleday. I still think Vaughn looks good at the plate. Maybe we can trade .2 WAR Vaughn for -.1 WAR Baty.
-
Palette has really pitched well this season. I wonder whether he is he ensconced as a reliever; or whether he was moved to the pen just to get his bearings and there really isn't much room in the rotation. Dalquist is in the same situation. If the bullpen is their future, they probably aren't far away. I hope it isn't though - might be selling them short.
-
With all of that swing-and-miss and having a down 2025 compared to 2024, Laviolette seems like a reach at 10. Caglianone was right under their nose last year, and he had more power and a lot less K thank Laviolette.
-
Or maybe keep Thaiss and move Lee. I assume a last gasping hope that Vaughn can turn himself into something tradeworthy is why they keep him around.
-
That would have required a big contract extension - but that was also a time that JR and EE were signing Free Agents. He was an excellent player. May he rest in peace.
