He's always had reliever risk. Out of the big 3 in Birmingham I'd take 1 Ace, 1 mid rotation, 1 late inning reliever. Still hoping for 3 aces; and man the Sox are due for some good tidings after all of this. On another matter, I assume that Caleb Freeman will be up soon. Is there any velocity to his game?

Not a problem with him too often- you have to get on base first. Anyway, it should be Vaughn or Elko. Sox need to be more athletic and run more. I like the idea to just send Vaughn down.

I'm looking over his stats, and I wonder what compelled the Cubs (and then the Sox) to Rule 5 this guy. He struggled in the minors until 2024, where he had a sold year in AA, showing 20ish HR power but >25% Ks. That's good, but there must be something beneath the numbers. Perhaps he's a great defender? Anyway, he's likely going to play the all-glove/"don't expect you to hit" role that Amaya currently holds; so seems like a good time to cut Amaya.

Sox trade Jank to the Rays and he goes 2/4 with a double in his Rays debut. Rays seem like the perfect team for him; surprised he hasn't played there before.

His value now is dropping like a rock and it's down to his speed, his D (except for last night), and the idea that he has done it before and he just needs a change of scenery. They have to move him by August so be open now. At this point, I'd look to the low minors of some teams like Philly or LA. I would generally avoid trading with the Dodgers, but it's really hard to get ripped off at this point, and at least the Sox have some knowledge of the Dodgers low minors and they have some talent. Avoid at all cost Rule 5 guys. We're shuffling through those guys right now (and not fast enough, imo).

Well-said. I'm taking the other side of this: this isn't the time to fire Getz. Yeah, he shouldn't have been hired in the first place; it looks like he botched the Fedde and Cease trades; Kopech part of the trade looks good and everything Crochet looks great. Still he's got to do better. And as far as the team goes, this probably is the sorriest collection of veteran position players assembled on a major league roster in the last 40 years (except for 2024). But what matters is Medroth and Quero sliding in, with more to come. Shane Smith and Vasil (no bench coach found him). And if JR fires Getz, it's not like he's going to hire the Guardians or Rays #2. More like a Bobby Evans type. Yuk. Getz is all we got. And I like our position over, say, the Twins right now.

What's the concern re Elko? Bad speed not at major league standards; a debilitating weakness with certain pitches? Perhaps no room for him with Vaughn. ..... I hope during May, we see a good bit of churn. It still makes more sense to have, say, Fletcher up, than to play Taylor.e.g.

85-win Mariners draft 3rd. $11.1 Mill for #1 pick depreciates all the way down to $3.4 mill for the Guardians at #27. There's your incentive to tank right there: a 70% diminution in less than 1 round MLB draft is replete with counterproductive contrivances.

Canon could still end up a 4 or 5. But regardless, they'll need a lot more starting depth than this. They'll need a bullpen too. And given the sorry results they get from drafting position players, it may be best to move one or both of the Smiths for young hitters...which would mean they need more hitting.

What about short relief- harness what he has for a inning or 2 a few times a week. A lot of good reliever came via the starter path.

Using this as a "Should we claim them?" thread, should the Sox claim some Gage Workman? Looks like he was pretty blah as a prospect, until last year in AA.

Probably sound advice or any prospect: use 'em or move 'em. And if Teel and Quero are both ML Quality catchers each of whom can hit, they probably should move one (unless they can figure out a way for both to play every day and not just DH) - guys like that are so rare that they should be able to get 2 good players for 1. This happened to the Orioles- held onto prospects too long; looked like they may be getting stale, so used 2 of them on the mediocrity named Trevor Rogers. (would have been a nice return for Fedde, as things look now).

Chad Bradford, the steal of the century... a whole 10 career WAR. How could Williams let that fine middle reliever go for a catching prospect. A heist it was, as Olivo only had 8 career WAR. I like analytics, and KW made some goofy moves, but the harangue over Chad Bradford in that book along with the beat-down of KW because of that trade, was ridiculous.

Dalquist is interesting. Just looking at stats, pretty awful his first few years. 2023 in A+ was particularly poor: 62 IP, spent time of the "development list", and averaged over 7BBs/9 and a 7+ERA. He made discernable improvement in 2024 (despite moving up a level) and more improvement so far in 2025. In between, though, he was beaten up pretty good in 2024 AFL. Walks, which have been the bane of his career, are way down in 2025; as are the Ks. Is it all good fortune or has he turned a corner?
