QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jun 21, 2014 -> 03:44 PM) Yeah. Giving up a draft pick to sign a pitcher in the offseason is a stupid idea. The Sox are still in the process of acquiring young, cost-controlled players. Shields or another free agent pitcher that costs you resources besides money will not happen in my opinion. And it should not happen. This team has maybe 5-6 above average players and only 2 all star level players. A lot more talent is needed before talks of "going for it" make any sense at all.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 20, 2014 -> 10:47 PM) "We could have used 'Downsie' in that situation but Joe is good against lefties," Ventura said. "That isn't necessarily the one (we would bring a lefty in to face). But there are times when it would be nice to have another one down there but our (right-handers), some guys are good against lefties." Actually Mauer was hitting .220 against lefties with no home runs in 91 at-bats. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseb...0,4864096.story Stunningly incompetent.

Extending the hapless Ventura, to me, is Hahn's major goof as GM. Of course, that could have been forced from above.

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jun 19, 2014 -> 01:07 PM) Hey if someone wants to do the Haren deal for Q then I do it. But no, dumping him for s*** is not a good idea. Not that all the Ms players are s*** or anything but given the amount of $$$, quality, youth, the fact that he can pitch just fine in a hitters park in the AL, etc. you ask for a ton & maybe you throw him out there as a counter to Price. But only for a major haul, and I'd rather go quantity of quality Vs. 3 players headlined by some prospect who everyone loves now but who in the end is probably way overhyped. I agree. And that's often why you go for prospects in high A, but higher end and more of them. they haven't rotted on the vine, always a risk with AAA prospects. All these guys except for a few of your players should have a price. No giveaways, and not even "fair deals" for players like Q, but where we get a surplus in return for another team's high need or desperation.

And Sanchez can play SS, right?

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jun 19, 2014 -> 05:33 PM) The more he trades unproven prospects for MLB proven players like Kenny the better he will be. How many of those trades of prospects for veterans actually benefited the Sox? The Garcia trade, when the top 5 prospect in baseball turned out to be crap. Which other trade of prospects for veterans (usually declining veterans) actually helped significantly? Williams did pretty well DESPITE his love of declining veterans....not because of it. The "For Sale" sign should be brightly lit and blinking for most of the veterans on this team.

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jun 19, 2014 -> 02:02 PM) We could get more than that in the offseason, silly. Would you purchase a big time asset at 50% of its value to turn around and sell to the highest bidder 5 months later? Umm, yes.... TB is not trading him for 1/2 his value. This team is not contending this year with or without Shields

QUOTE (Jake @ Jun 17, 2014 -> 10:10 PM) Phegley's 8th passed ball of the season tonight. Can't believe he's still having these problems. Cannot be a MLB catcher with the passed ball rate he sports every season how about a position change for Phegley?

QUOTE (raBBit @ Jun 17, 2014 -> 06:55 PM) The AAA rotation has less bearing on the future of this rotation than you'd think. We have three guys that you know what you're getting from them (Sale, Q, Danks) and they are probably slated as a #1, #2 and #4. Then we have Carlos Rodon who may very well be in the rotation this time next year, Erik Johnson who was looked as a solid 3/4 three months ago and a boatload of money to spend. I am not as much worried about the rotation as I am the middle of the order, the defense and the health of the team moving forward. And every team in the bigs is worried about the last-menitoned concern. Ideally, you need 8 or 9 ready to go to be safe and to give yourself some flexibility. Pick 5, keep 2 in AAA, put 2 in the pen. That's ideal. 7 is a necessity. A pitiful Charlotte rotation with zero prospects (we'll see about Johnson) isn't necessarily probative of rotation problems, but in our case it is: Because we don't have any prospects with high ceilings in AA, and, regardless of ceiling, they are 2 years from the major anyway. Oh sure we can rush Rodon after he was hard used all spring, and considering we have limited years available to use him anyway (with Boras as his agent, the odds of getting one of those compromise extensions are near zilch). Then next year we can have Sale, Q, Rodon, Danks and Rienzo (who's okay for a 5) and say we're ready to go!. Get one injury and we're back in a mess. Build this right.

QUOTE (oldsox @ Jun 17, 2014 -> 06:51 PM) Why not trade for him? Even with his sub-par performance this year, he is still better than at least one of our starting outfielders. Yes, let's use assets to acquire declining veterans. NO

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 17, 2014 -> 08:18 AM) You don't sell off pieces for the future for an upgrade for solely 2014. You make moves similar to the trades for Garcia, Contreras, and Peavy in the past with some possibility of helping this year but with an eye towards next season. I would say absolutely not, except for perhaps something like the trade for Contreras. This org is not a year away from winning with this rotation and a AAA rotation that includes Axe and Veal.
-
QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Jun 15, 2014 -> 05:16 PM) Also, I believe in every one of those trades where you claimed "we got 1 pitching prospect back", we actually got multiple pieces back. Just wanted to point that out. Santos was for 1. Anyway except for the guy we sent to the Twins who may be progressing (have no idea), none of the pitching prospects did a thing.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 15, 2014 -> 01:10 PM) Who was flipped with Eduardo Escobar for Francisco Liriano, one of the ten best pitchers in the NL last season. How nice. Liriano was good with the Pirates. He sported a 5.4 ERA for us. But I did forget about that pitcher, who yielded us zip. Was thinking about Castro, who's yielded less than zip.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 15, 2014 -> 10:55 AM) Well this is why I always liked Kenny...the prospects route, while admittedly what was needed at the point in which Hahn took over, can be very frustrating. If good teams were offering up can't miss prospects, it would be a lot simpler to rebuild...problem is, they rarely do. Hahn is going to miss on some guys, but he's also going to hit on some guys that we didn't expect would pan out. It's an exercise in patience and withholding judgement until you can see his plan take shape a bit more. Kenny went the prospect route: traded TCQ for a single pitching prospect who was awful; traded Santos for a single pitching prospect who was awful; the prospect for EJ was a single pitching prospect who was awful. Note that all 3 single pitching prospects were "near ML ready" but actually had hit a peak and had already started to decline. Hahn has a lot of work to do over the next 6 weeks. No more flawed declining AAA prospects. Take the As and AAs with promise and develop them.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jun 14, 2014 -> 10:20 AM) http://www.milb.com/scoreboard/index.jsp?s...mp;ymd=20140614 Charlotte- Axelrod and Heath HOnestly, how can a AAA franchise have both of those as SPs? Lord this org lacks pitching.
-
QUOTE (scs787 @ Jun 14, 2014 -> 01:34 PM) He's been pretty solid in the minors sans this year. Never really showed anything in the majors. Maybe he's a Steverson guy. Jake Sanchez, who the Sox gave up, was an interesting prospect. I can't understand giving any sort of real prospect for this guy. I don't know what Sanchez is, but I assume he isn't a prospect. Scrap heap's one thing, but you trade for scrap heap players.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jun 14, 2014 -> 04:18 PM) Thoughts? Don't catchers usually sit in day games after night games? Nieto's appeared at least passable this season.

QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Jun 13, 2014 -> 06:04 PM) I say open up the Trade Winds Forum. It's about that time in the summer. The question is, are the sox buyers or sellers this summer? Can they perhaps be both???? They can't possibly buyers. Well I guess they could, but it's wishing on a star, believing that this team will seriously contend. it's far more likely that they finish last than first. Don't waste an opportunity to acquire young talent.
-
I would have thought that Wendelken would have been top 15-20ish.
-
The question is, are they more likely to go on an 8/10 win streak, or an 8/10 losing streak. Because it will come.

Garfein: Sox could trade Beckham for pitching

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 12, 2014 -> 09:42 AM) And/or Semien and Micah Johnson become part of the outfield solution. Granted, it's hard to imagine Eaton and one of those two putting up 675-725 OPS numbers together. Eaton's got to return to his 750-775 form...more walks, more stolen bases and an improved steal percentage. But there's no doubt we're a much more formidable line-up with a healthy/pesky Adam at the top. Honestly, with Beckham hitting 2nd and then ABreu, I'm not all that interested in Eaton doing much stealing. Not worth the risk. Now more walks would help. -

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jun 12, 2014 -> 09:20 AM) He'll cost about $6m (half of the entire value of the Keppinger contract) and another season of Semien/Sanchez/Johnson/Saladino being forced out of position or stuck in AAA. I'm not saying that logjam has been or will be a problem THIS year, but it probably will next year. And it'll be Gordon free agent year. It's time to s*** or get off the pot with him. The logjam could thin itself out over the next year. Once PK and Dunn leave, Gillaspie will/should play more backup 3B and do some DHing. Beckham and Alexei are both movable. We're also woefully short of decent outfielders, so any of those guys could be moved for a similar OF prospect. Don't force a trade of Beckham, but certainly listen. -

If they trade him, trade him for young prospects with some ceiling. Trading him for bullpen pieces will never get us anywhere. -
QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Jun 10, 2014 -> 09:44 PM) It isn't bad if he can hit 25+ home runs and steal some bases for us.. And have an occasional break out year. And if he can walk and reduce the Ks.

We have close to zero pitching in the mid and upper minors. That, I suspect, is why the records are so poor.
