Due to some changes where I work, a group in my department have joined together and voted to unionize. I am neither pro nor anti union, but in this case, I really have no desire to join in on this cause. I feel it's an over reaction to the situation. Franky while I am not happy with the changes, I have no problem doing what I am doing. I think some people are just upset they are being moved out of "comfortable" positions. In the state of IL, do I have the right to reject being in the union? I know IL is not a "Right to Work" state, but when I started this position, the union did not exist. It strikes me as wrong that I might be forced to join a union formed AFTER I was already hired. Any advice would be appreciated.

QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 28, 2013 -> 09:19 AM) Let's say your employer comes to you and says: 1. We're going to double your pay 2. We'd like you to change locations 3. You can work anywhere in the USA or Canada, except those poopy French parts Where do you go? I'd imagine some folks will stay put and others will hightail it outta there. I think I'd go to Boulder, CO Central Florida

I have a job interview in a town just NE of Orlando next Friday (Aug 9th). They are paying for my airfare. Didnt expect that since it isnt a high ranking position.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 25, 2013 -> 08:42 AM) Google Chromecast. Looks sweet. http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-media-rece...7-35823617.html THe idea is very interesting. However, I dont like the idea that i need another device to control it (especially if I want my kids to be able to access Netflix content). Apparently Google TV will be getting an update that will include Chromcast. So, to me, that's the best of both worlds. A box that can access content like Netflix or YouTube, and I can "cast" content to it.

QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 25, 2013 -> 11:46 PM) So will Chromecast be able to mirror my Chrome browser or not? Yes... and no. For a lot of content it pulls directly from the internet. But there is a beta feature that allows you to put tabs on the TV.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 11, 2013 -> 12:58 PM) My mac is always on as it is, I never turn it off, havent in years. I also need itunes to be open as I convert all my files to something it can understand so I can stream to my Apple TV. I had a feeling the Mac needed to be on and iTunes open. To me, that's a major draw back.
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 11, 2013 -> 12:44 PM) My imac plays that role and streams all my media via apple TV, all of my files are stored in an external storage farm I built which is probably now about 4 TB. I use Apple TV because I am all mac because of work and because we also have ipads. You can also do this with things like Roku and others. I just found it easier and cheaper deploying a few apple tv's around the house. When I set out to do this, I thought that as well. however, I believe the AppleTV requires you to leave your Mac on, am I correct? I was under the impression that the Mac becomes the media server.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 11, 2013 -> 12:24 PM) Second, are there copy-protection issues with modern movie disks (BD or DVD) that will make this impossible to do for some movies? Handbrake should rip almost any DVD. I am in the process of ripping my entire DVD collection. Blu-Ray is another beast. I believe it can be done with Handbrake, but Blu-Rays will make huge files and take a long time to encode even with a powerful computer. YOu may want to watch this too. Just to give you some ideas and options: Know How... Setting up a Media Server

There's a lot of options out there. Really depends on the money you want to spend. I have been looking for a similar solution, but I need to do it cheaply. I havent bought the parts yet, but here is what I am thinking fo doing. NAS (network attached storage) drive with DLNA enabled. This would hold all of video files Several options on Amazon Vizio Co-Star (Google TV) Supports DLNA via a built the PlayPoint app Netflix, Amazon Instant Video apps DLNA enabled apps for Android or iPad Stream movies to your iPad/Android from the NAS I havent researched this too much yet, but I hear there are some good options

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 05:43 PM) If their coverage wasn't garbage I'd give them my business. as long as you stay in the "metro" areas of the top 100 markets, you are ok. And if you stay near a highway, you are normally ok. The problem is when you drift away from those, they are practically non-existent and you end up moving over to ATT.

There's a report that Howard left LA because he wanted the Lakers to phase out Kobe Bryant after the 2013-14 season.

As T-Mobile brags on stage right now about their massive LTE roll out (supposedly 157 million customers), my wife struggles to get 2G while in Virginia. Heck, she barely has a signal. Sometimes, coverage > speed.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 01:48 PM) How is no one trying to find out how to get out of there? Why does that kid use a generator to power up cell phones when gas and electricity are finite resources? Why are people using cars when they know their air is limited and the smoke from the fire is trapped inside the dome? Some water can get through, so the dome is at least semi-permeable.

QUOTE (Brian @ Jul 2, 2013 -> 06:52 PM) DM2 has 76% on RT. I didnt care for the first though. Guess ill finally see Man of Steel tomorrow.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 1, 2013 -> 10:26 AM) Anyone watch Under the Dome? My wife and I gave it a shot because a lot of the reviewers (like Sepinwall) said it was decent and had a chance to be good. I dunno, seemed really cheesy to me. It just has "network drama" written all over it. Could have been better on cable. it wasnt bad. has some potential.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 1, 2013 -> 09:57 AM) Well, is it more pay? Does it offer more opportunity for advancement? Is the commute farther or shorter? Sometimes when someone actually comes after us, instead of vice versa (whether it be a girl, or someone wanting to buy your house, or offer you a job) it just doesn't quite seem right, because it isn't necessarily how things normally go...but try to take that part out of the equation and consider the opportunity as if it were one you might have pursued...or would you have pursued it at all? It's same pay, advancement... dont think there really is any, commute will be slightly longer. It's probably not something I woul dhave pursued. The crux of the issue, as best as I can figure out, is that I feel I am ideally fit for a specific kind of job. But the job I am looking for a very rare or hard to find. It's kind of a niche. And, this job isnt it. But, the problem is that do I hold out in hopes of maybe finding that job, or take a job that I feel is less ideal, but something I know I could do.

It what can only be described as out of the blue, last Tuesday I received a call to interview for a job I never applied for. They got my number from a former co-worker who had just accepted a job there and they felt I was a good fit for a position they were hiring. I interviewed Friday morning and received an offer before I left the building. Clearly they want me, and have bent over backwards to make changes so I would accept the offer. Everyone around me thinks it's a great opportunity and something I would enjoy, and it gets me out of a job I'm not really to keen about (but I tolerate it). All that being said, something just doesnt sit right with me, I cant explain it. I feel like I should/would like the job, it strikes me as something I would like to do, but my head is churning and churning, and I just cant get over that it doesnt feel right. grrr.... this is frustrating.

QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Jun 28, 2013 -> 01:40 PM) Um...my guess is they didn't start editing those videos until Tuesday morning. It is Friday morning. That's not easy. Thanks for your input though. -- Your Friendly Resident Video Editor As a video editor myself, It is not easy to have a quick turn around. It probably had to be finalized by Thursday afternoon. So, a little under 2 and a half days. -
