  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 30, 2011 -> 03:54 PM) Post #12 Jeff Bajenaru Soxtalk legend for simply posting on the board and nothing else. Steve Sax
  2. QUOTE (Brian @ Jan 30, 2011 -> 03:55 PM) Love Simmons NBA podcasts. This last one was great talking about the overratedness of Kobe's clutchness. That's actually been a pretty hot topic everywhere of late. I was shocked when I actually saw the numbers.
  3. Think I know why I thought Infante wasn't thought to have plus velocity after re-reading a BA piece on him last year. Before last year he had primarily been a starter. Therefore he wasn't able to 'let it go' like he was able to as a reliever. And the pedestrian K-rate as a starter would support that theory. It wasn't until he was banished to the 'pen that his K-rate spiked dramatically.
  4. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jan 30, 2011 -> 09:52 AM) Well the only reason Sale is a question as a starting pitcher is because he can be so dominant as a reliever. If we had a legit closer, he would undoubtedly be starting. So it's less an indictment on Sale and more of one on the White Sox. And I still can't get myself to agree with Dayan being behind Morel. Morel's ceiling is a GG-caliber defensive player who has an .800 OPS. Not bad at all, but Dayan can be an MVP-type bat. That's not the only reason. There were questions before the draft on what his long-term role would be.
  5. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 29, 2011 -> 11:59 PM) He was at 95.8 with his fastball in the majors. It's a small sample size, but it doesn't take much of a sample size to establish velocity. I would say that is plus velocity. Yeah, I just saw that. Well I didn't see any of Infante last year. Stuff I've read didn't conclude that he had plus velocity. But I'd say almost 96 MPH definitely qualifies. So I was wrong there.
  6. QUOTE (knightni @ Jan 29, 2011 -> 09:04 PM) Sans footwear Earl Battey Had no idea who you were talking about. Had to look him up. Horrible would be being kind to sum up his White Sox career. Shawn Abner
  7. QUOTE (knightni @ Jan 29, 2011 -> 06:42 PM) I take nominations from everyone and you guys all vote out in the open. There's no underhandedness going on. If there was, I would have won one by now. lol. Nobody is getting on your for anything. This isn't serious at all. Just simple observations and facts.
  8. QUOTE (danman31 @ Jan 29, 2011 -> 11:35 PM) Oh I wasn't comparing minor league numbers. I was more saying that Alcides Escobar and Andrus suck at offense. I was all about Eduardo, but it's almost no longer cool now that people are overrating him. I'm not a big fan of defense only SS. If you can't hit, baseball is the wrong game for you. I agree. Elvis Andrus doesn't have a lick of power. He did sport a .342 OBP as a 21-year old last year. Our Escobar has a career .318 OBP in most high A ball and below. So at least with Andrus there's some upside. I will concede the other Escobar flat sucked last year. I was really disappointed. I picked him to win the ROY and took him in 3 of my 4 fantasy leagues thinking I could get a decent average and some cheap steals. Can't steal when you're never on base.
  9. QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Jan 29, 2011 -> 11:25 PM) What makes you think Teahen might "easily hit" at this level? Prior to his abysmal 2010 season with the Sox, he had three 524+ at-bat seasons with Kansas City, where the most he was able to muster was 15 homers and 60 RBIs. I'm sorry - he has done NOTHING during his six year career now to suggest he's able to hit at the levels you suggest - levels that aren't even all that great, truth be told. Certainly not for a corner infielder/outfielder, the positions he's purportedly headed to play. Teahen peaked in 2006 at age 24. He's a below average player. It's critical that Morel comes out and earns the job this spring. I just have a horrible feeling that if Teahen hits .400 in the spring likes most scrub players tend to do he'll get the job regardless and we'll be subject to at least a good month of him starting every day at 3B before Ozzie realizes that he's not good and contemplates a switch.
  10. QUOTE (danman31 @ Jan 29, 2011 -> 11:20 PM) Not to argue, but does that mean Alcides Escobar and Elvis Andrus are bad Major Leaguers? I would tend to agree, but I thought people were using them as the prototypes for defense being valuable or something in the other thread. They were .700+ OPS guys for most of their minor league careers IIRC. Andrus was 20 and Esobar was 21 when they first hit the big leagues. And both of those guys have another premium tool in their speed, something I haven't read associated with Eduardo. Eduardo is 22 and from what I've read a best-case scenario would be him possibly getting a shot in 2012. In which he would be 23. I get what you're saying. And it's fair. But I don't think our Escobar is on the same level as Andrus and the other Escobar, even if their OPS's aren't that much different.
  11. QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Jan 29, 2011 -> 09:09 PM) You see bullpen arms in teams top10 prospects all the time, if his arm is as electric as advertised and the fact he prob going to be in majors this season don't think it's a joke. Most of the bullpen arms you see ranked that high are guys that have plus velocity and a plus, or potential to be plus, breaking pitch. Infante has neither. And his minor league resume is hardly impressive. QUOTE (Springfield SoxFan @ Jan 29, 2011 -> 09:42 PM) A's, Marlins, Brewers are beneath the Sox. A's and Marlins? Little surprising. Though I guess the Marlins have graduated quite a bit of talent [stanton, Morrison, Sanchez] recently. I assume the Royals were the overwhelming choice for #1?
  12. Has a team in recent history flown more under the radar than this year's Spurs? They beat the Rockets tonight to push their record to 40-7. And they get about as much pub as my HS intramural team. Their depth is insane.
  13. QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Jan 29, 2011 -> 07:11 PM) I don't think our top6 is that bad at all, just after that the lack of depth really shows. Gregory Infante at 6 is a joke. Not that he's not worthy. But the fact that he is worthy speaks to how terrible the system is.
  14. QUOTE (Springfield SoxFan @ Jan 29, 2011 -> 07:02 PM) 1. Chris Sale 2. Brent Morel 3. Dayan Viciedo 4. Jared Mitchell 5. Eduardo Escobar 6. Gregori Infante 7. Jacob Petrika 8. Brandon Short 9. Trace Thompson 10. Anthony Carter 11.. Charlie Leesman 12. Santos Rodriguez 13. Addison Reed 14. Mike Blanke 15. Lucas Harrell 16. Thomas Royse 17. Tyler Flowers 18. Jordan Danks 19. Andy Wilkins 20. Tyler Saldino 21. Nate Jones 22. Jhonny Nunez 23. Kyle Cofield 24. Miguel Gonzalez 25. Andre Rienzo 26. Josh Phegly 27. Matt Heidenreich 28. Jon Gilmore 29. Cameron Bayne 39. Spencer Arroyo 31. Kyle Bellamy Overall, it ranks the Sox system 27th. Thoughts? No surprises here. System pretty much sucks. No legitimate SP prospects other than Sale, and even that's in question. Mitchell, who was already raw to begin with, is now going to have to overcome a year of rust. Danks and Flowers are mere afterthoughts now. I'm not at all sold on Escobar and his career .668 OPS. No defense in the world can overcome such a horrific bat. Who were the 3 teams ranked below the Sox? I'm certain the Astros and Brewers were. Are the Cardinals the other team?
  15. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Jan 29, 2011 -> 05:54 PM) Yea, he looked REALLY good out there last year. He's always busting his rump whether it's in the field or in the box or on the bases. But I, like any other GM, would gladly take a true corner outfielder over him, especially in our park. Is what it is and I'll root for him. Oh, I agree there. Give me above average offense and mediocre defense over below average offense and above average defense any day.
  16. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 29, 2011 -> 05:31 PM) Dude, it's a message board. Why on Earth would there be drama? I didn't mean drama in a negative way. I meant as far as suspense goes. I don't give a s*** about these awards. But qwerty was right. You can pretty much predict every single one of them that doesn't require a different winner [i.e. the rookie of the year award].
  17. Much as I loathe Juan's Pierre's game, even I can give him his due for his excellent range. Though I will say I think playing in a smaller ballpark compared to Dodger stadium made him look a little better than he really is.
  18. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jan 29, 2011 -> 04:07 AM) So.....you are saying these awards are like Gold Glove awards? Does that mean Jeter will sweep the show? Pretty much. Heads or Wite will win the best drunk poster award [though I clearly deserved it over both of them for '09]. Critic will win the funniest award. Fathom will probably win the pessimist award [though I'm sure I'll get plenty of votes for this one]. Kalapse will win poster of the year. There's not a whole lot of drama with Soxtalk awards.
  19. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 29, 2011 -> 05:20 PM) Which will do nothing but keep them out of the playoffs and towards the middle of the draft. They're a distant 4th behind the Cards, Reds and Brewers. They had their chance in '08.
  20. Um, I'm fairly certain [more like absolutely certain] that whatever we do or don't do is tied into what the Cubs do in any way shape or form. As far as us taking away some of their fan base, that ship has long sailed. We had our chance at that going in '06 and have failed pretty miserably since then. Basically, until we go on a run, something like what the Twins have done, the Cubs will always be king around here when it comes to sell-outs and popularity. And also, I don't know where one got the idea the Cubs were going into 'rebuild' mode. Soriano isn't going anywhere. Zambrano isn't going anywhere. Fukodome isn't going anywhere. Dempster's due almost 30 million the next two years. Silva ain't going anywhere. I guess Ramirez would be the only real attractive piece of all their high-priced players. But even then you'd have to find a legitimate match. Which wouldn't be easy considering he's only got 1 year and over 14 million due. The Cubs simply have too many horrid contracts to ever go into rebuild mod at least until after the '12 season.
  21. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jan 29, 2011 -> 11:55 AM) Yeah, Delmon is consistently below average defensively. Good arm, bad range, bad routes. The thing about the Twins is that their SP staff is due to completely implode. IMO, they've been playing over their heads for a couple years now. Six division titles in nine years says otherwise.
  22. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 29, 2011 -> 10:01 AM) Here's the pre-ST Teahen fluff piece. This one was almost as bad as Scott Merkins 'Juan Pierre should be better in year 2 of his AL career' piece.
  23. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jan 28, 2011 -> 10:29 AM) No matter what you think about Dayan overall, to not have him on the Sox top 10 list is an absolute f***in joke. Yeah, I actually like Law. But to not have DV in the top 10 in our pathetic joke of a system is inexcusable. Dayan's got more talent is his right ankle than about 90 percent of our overall system.
  24. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 28, 2011 -> 11:33 AM) Might as well give you a few more possibles. Madison Bumgartner, Tommy Hanson. I'm a big fan of both of those guys, especially Hanson. I'd still go with Gallardo.
  25. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Jan 28, 2011 -> 09:53 AM) well, if you're in the NW burbs the Milwaukee trip is really easy! I mean Strasburg.
