  1. QUOTE (chisoxfan09 @ Feb 13, 2011 -> 08:30 PM) Even if they were able too they have that window of 5-6 years during the life of the contract when they would get the most value. I can't see Pujols being effective after age 38 but hey some DH types are still mashin the ball a little bit (Thome comes to mind). I think another idea might be to front load the contract for whoever signs him. The 10 year thing should be club options though. Thome doesn't play the field. And I've heard nothing that would suggest Pujols being alright with being a full-time DH.
  2. QUOTE (fathom @ Feb 13, 2011 -> 08:20 PM) The funny thing is that the Cubs could spend that 30 million a hell of a lot better than using it on Pujols. Funny thing is I wouldn't care if he went to the Cubs. They've got so many holes and the most immovable contract (yes, I know Wells got moved. But I don't see anybody touching Soriano) in baseball. They wouldn't be able to put a decent enough cast around Pujols to win anything.
  3. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Feb 13, 2011 -> 08:16 PM) I get what you are saying about the Yanks & BoSox, but I would still never count them out. A combination of Tex/AGon & Pujols at 1B/DH. I think they could convince one of the guys to play more DH. It's not that. I just don't think either would shell out $30 million a year for 10 years for what would be a luxury for them. I can't even see the Yankees sporting a $250 million dollar payroll.
  4. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 13, 2011 -> 07:55 PM) If the Cards don't extend him, I'd bet he ends up in the AL. He's worth more money to a team that has the DH spot available. What AL team could afford to add a $30 million dollar a year player to their roster? The Yankees and Red Sox are just fine at 1B. And I don't even think they would or could open up their wallets for Albert. Tigers? No. Maybe the Angels? And they just took on the most ridiculous contract in baseball.
  5. QUOTE (whtsoxfan @ Feb 13, 2011 -> 07:49 PM) however we need the starters to produce. Remember last year, when most of us thought we were loaded with quality starters? Three of them disappointed IMO. Buehrle 13-13, Floyd 10-13, Jackson 10-12. Forget Peavy, he's a luxury. He may not be ready to contribute for a whole year. These are the guys that need to contribute in order to go all the way. Our bullpen should be very solid. Um, we had Jackson for two months and he performed admirably. And I don't even like Jackson. I agree with most of your post. I'm one not totally sold on the bullpen. The only sure thing is Thornton.
  6. QUOTE (chisoxfan09 @ Feb 13, 2011 -> 07:40 PM) Link: http://content.usatoday.com/communities/da...talks-tuesday/1 Whoa Nellie!!! Seems the latest offer was rejected and he may just shut down the talks come Wednesday. We got ourselves a recipe for a season long hype fest folks!! As long as he stays out of the AL I'm cool. I still think they'll work something out. And another thing, am I the only person that gets really f***ing annoyed when I read s*** like Pujols is "perhaps" baseballs best player or "probably" the best player of his genertation? There is no f***ing perhaps or probably. It's like saying Jordan was probably the best player of his era. Albert Pujols is WITHOUT QUESTION the best player of the last decade. Nobody is close. Not Mauer. Not Cabrera. Not Carlos Gonzalez. Nobody.
  7. OK, I'm like seriously jonesing for some baseball right now. I mean, I even miss Juan Pierre's epic attempts at getting on base via the weak single.
  8. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Feb 13, 2011 -> 10:46 AM) It's pretty simple imo: Peavy starts on the dl, let Humber take a few spot starts(yes I know he's garbage but he's the best of the garbage that we have) and then dfa him or whatever the hell you need to do when Jake's ready to go. I'll be sure not to watch any games in which Humber, Harrell or Pena start. Maybe I can come to your spot and get wasted on those days?
  9. QUOTE (supernuke @ Feb 13, 2011 -> 10:10 AM) I'm in, and Troy Tulowitzki is still an Asshole. Lol. Don't hate.
  10. QUOTE (flavum @ Feb 13, 2011 -> 10:17 AM) Man, it would really suck if they play 6 months of baseball, only for it to end up Phillies/Red Sox in the Series. I have serious doubts about the Phillies. They're still my pick to win the division, as it's impossible to go against that rotation. But their lineup and bullpen have some serious question marks. As for the Red Sox, what can you say? They're f***ing loaded.
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 13, 2011 -> 10:01 AM) Bring along a Harrell or someone to be that swing man until Peavy is ready. Start Sale in the pen and leave him there. You may as well throw me out there. Lucas Harrell couldn't crack the Pirates' rotation. The Sox can't afford to throw games away early, as they've been a perennial subpar second half squad under Ozzie.
  12. A 4-man rotation at any point in April is a terrible idea. And it just reinforces how bad our minor league system is that we don't have one capable arm to fill in for even a few starts, let alone for half a season.
  13. My name is Jordan4life, and I want Taco Bell. I will do anything for a beefy supreme gordita or 8. God I miss that atrosious looking doggy
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 13, 2011 -> 12:01 AM) Come on man. You can't watch some prime Duncan and Olajuwon and say that Shaq had anything resembling a post move. And you can't honestly say Shaq got by on 15 dunks per game during his prime. Like I said to Knight, Youtube is your friend. Memory eludes a lot of us. Hell, I sometimes forget how good MJ was. There's plenty of data from Youtube that perfectly illustrates how versatile Shaq was from an offensive point of view.
  15. Jay Bruce Prince Fielder Carlos González Chris Johnson Ian Kinsler Evan Longoria Buster Posey Colby Rasmus Troy Tulowitzki Chris Young Brett Anderson John Axford Fausto Carmona Jorge De La Rosa Matt Garza Joel Hanrahan Edwin Jackson Mike Pelfrey Fernando Rodney Max Scherzer Koji Uehara The bolded are my keepers for now. Troy and Longoria are off limits. I'm open to trading Carlos for pitching. Everybody else on my roster is obviously open for trade. Anybody interested get at me.
  16. QUOTE (WCSox @ Feb 12, 2011 -> 08:19 PM) By the time the years of wear and tear from playing catcher begin to affect his game, it'll be too late. I hope you're right. I just don't see it. Mauer is a fantastic athlete. As long as he doesn't have some debilitating injury, he'll be a force for quite some time.
  17. Dunn. Adam Dunn. And it's not that close to me. For those saying PK. Would you have said PK after '07, '08 or '09? Doubtful. You're going strictly off what he did last year. And he's due for a mega-crash (not saying he'll be a scrub, but he definitely won't be a top 5 1B) in '11. The age 35 season hasn't been kind to many players over the years, or more specifically, the post-steroid era. His BABIP and HR/FB % were well above his career averages last year. Rios is not consistent enough yet. He had a subpar June through September last year. Alexei has to realize that it's OK to show up in April/May. Can't really go with a pitcher, as they just can't have the impact of an every day player. Dunn is a mortal lock for .255-.260/40/100/.380/.540. And that's just his floor. His game translates to ANY park. So you could see a slight spike this year. Adam Dunn, my friends, is the White Sox' best player. Juan Pierre is our worst every day player (not including Morel, who's an unknown at this point).
  18. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 12, 2011 -> 06:13 PM) The only thing I enjoyed watching about Shaq was when he broke backboards. Other than that, his style bored the crap out of me. It was like watching a seventh grader steal lunch money from a first grader. It was all brute force and size. I've never been what you could call a true Shaq fan. But I have to vehemently disagree with the notion that he was just a 330 pound ape that bullied and overpowered everybody. Sure, he did do that. But Shaq was a physical and athletic marvel for his size in his younger days and prime years. He had a bevy of post moves that complimented that brute force. Jump hooks, drop steps, spin moves, ect. He was also an excellent passer for a center. Shaq's peak, which I would say spanned from 1997 through 2003, was as good a peak as we've seen in the last 20 years or so (save MJ), IMO. I get a kick out of these 15-year olds today that act like Dwight Howard is the greatest discovery since internet porn. He's basically the Walmart version of Shaq.
  19. AL ROY: Jermey Hellickson AL manager of the year: Bob Geren AL CY: Jon Lester AL MVP: Evan Longoria NL ROY: Freddie Freeman NL manager of the year: Fredi Gonzalez NL CY: Clayton Kershaw NL MVP: Carlos Gonzalez Oh, I predict Derek Jeter will win the AL Gold Glove. Couldn't forget about that prestigious award.
  20. QUOTE (knightni @ Feb 11, 2011 -> 10:01 PM) They were both nimble big guys. Duncan was pretty wire-y coming out of college. Youtube is your friend. Duncan was nowhere near as athletic and fleet of foot as Hakeem. KG isn't even really that close. I do think it should be noted that Hakeem was in the 6'9, 6'10 range (closer to 6'9). He was definitely not 7'0. That might've helped him a tad.
  21. I'm just going to go with my division/wildcard winners, as second place and below is pretty irrelevant. AL East: Red Sox AL Central: Twins AL West: A's AL wildcard: Rays NL East: Phillies NL Central: Brewers NL West: Rockies NL wildcard: Braves
  22. QUOTE (joeynach @ Feb 11, 2011 -> 07:53 PM) No bull man but I like to let the numbers speak for themselves. According to baseball-reference, in 3092 career at bats Mauer owns a career 162 game average of .327/.407/.481/.888 with 16HR and 81 RBI. Those are the facts. In fact aside from a slight difference in batting average its almost the same as Chipper Jones career 162 game average of .306/.405/.536/.941 with 21 HR and 107 RBI. And if you are a saber guy right off the bat you say Chipper Jones is a much more valuable player becuase batting average is hogwash and OPS is everything, Jones OPS is 52 points higher than Mauer's. Chipper Jones has had a fine paying career, but the highest he was ever payed was $16M annually in 2005 as part of a 6 year 90M contract he signed in 2001. Since then he has had average salary of about $12M. And after all that Mauer gets an 8 year $184M contract becuase of what, hes a catcher, becuase he went to HS and grew up in St. Paul, becuase Twins fans wanted the local favorite around forever. Thats awful becuase he is NOT EVEN AS GOOD OF A HITTER AS CHIPPER JONES! Yes, a sizable portion of his overall value comes from being a catcher. Catchers just don't do what this guy does for the most part. And he's a + defender. So we're not talking Piazza here, who was all bat and horrible defensively. Mauer's line the last five years (since his first battle title): .334/.416/.491/.906. That would be a premium slash line for any position outside of 1B. But to get those kinda numbers from the most forgiving offensive position on the field? Unheard of in recent memory. And I don't think it's a stretch to say he could even expand on those numbers if he was free from the daily grind that is catching. Mauer is a special, special talent. The Twins did what they had to do.
  23. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Feb 11, 2011 -> 07:39 PM) You don't say? What are you implying? Honestly, I really like the Felipe Paulino, Ty Wiggington, Matt Lindstrom additions. Yes, I know Paulino's numbers flat suck. But his stuff is real. If he could ever harness it hell be a hell of a pitcher. I expect breakout years from De La Rosa and Ian Stewart. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Feb 11, 2011 -> 07:41 PM) CarGo is going to be the MVP and Cy Young this upcoming season. If anybody could do it...
  24. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 11, 2011 -> 06:27 PM) Really? I would have to say I liked Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, young Shaq, Dominique, John Stockton to name a few more than I like Blake Griffin. Throw in guys like pre-crack/pre-fatass Shawn Kemp, young Stacey Augmon, Hornets version of Larry Johnson and Kevin Johnson to that list.
  25. QUOTE (sircaffey @ Feb 11, 2011 -> 05:53 PM) Didn't even mentioned Jonathan Sanchez who is much better than Bumgarner, at this point. Only the Phillies can match their 1-4, and even they can't match the Giants' pen. I think the Giants have a good chance to play the Phillies for the NL pennant. At that point, who knows what happens. Still not impressed with that offense aside from Posey. They got a lot of out of nowhere years from Huff, Torres, Burrell, ect. The Giants are tailor-made for 5 and 7-game series. Not so much the 162 game grind. Now if Sandoval bounces back and this Brandon Belt kid is as good as I'm hearing, that will make a huge difference and probably make them the prohibitive favorite. I like the Rockies in that division FWIW.
