JR says payroll is at 125 million
QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Jan 23, 2011 -> 03:44 PM) No, now it's the players turn. If they do their part, then it's time for the fans to show up. In other words, be a bandwagoner?

Bears versus Packers game thread
QUOTE (G&T @ Jan 23, 2011 -> 03:35 PM) Gonna need a Steelers style 3rd. Like somebody else said, this has the feeling of a 30-0 rout. Yet we're down 14 with a whole half to go. We can do this.

JR says payroll is at 125 million
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 23, 2011 -> 03:32 PM) It is sure easy for people to say the Sox need to spend to get them to go to games... You got that right. I went to two games last year. It's a lot different when you're living on your own as compared to living with your parents. I just don't have the cash. And I work close to 40 hours a week.

I could be in denial, but I've got this strong feeling we're going to make some adjustments and come back in this one.

White Sox Off-Season Catch All Thread
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 23, 2011 -> 09:07 AM) According to Scott Gregor, Daily Herald White Sox beat writer, his inside sources say Chris Sale is a lock to be the White Sox closer in 2011. I like it. Just don't dick him around. We've seen guys like Andrew Bailey and Neftali Feliz handle the roll quite well their initial years. Sale's frame and delivery will always scare me. But whatever. He's got the stuff. I'd much rather leave Thorton in the role he's flourished in for the last five years.

Manny lands in Tampa...
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 23, 2011 -> 02:59 AM) You did remember that they traded Marcum to Milwaukee when you made this post, right? The Jays don't stand a chance in that division, and I don't care if you aren't confident in Boston's rotation (Lester is still amazing and they should be able to get a 4.50 ERA from the combination of Beckett, Buccholz, Lackey, and Matsuzaka) because their offense could score 900 runs even if there is another down offensive year. I think that the Red Sox could quite legitimately have an All-Star at every position except C and CF, assuming Lowrie is their starting SS and Scutaro hops around the infield. Wellllll, if Hill and Lind were to revert back to their '09 levels, Bautista has every bit the season in '11 that he had in '10, Romero and Morrow, two extremely talented pitchers, make that next leap, along with a guy like Drabek challenging for the AL ROY, they could definitely make some noise. But that's a whole lot of ifs right there. I'm with you. Boston is clearly the class of the AL at the moment.

Official 2010-11 NFL Thread
QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jan 23, 2011 -> 08:39 AM) :headbang I loved that game. FINISH HIM! MK started the whole 'violent' video game genre. I remember playing that game for HOURS at a time. And then when Columbine happened [i was only 16 at the time], my mom tried to get my dad to forbid me from playing the game. lol. They fell for the video game violence bulls*** contributing to school shootings. Pretty lame.

Beckham batting 2nd...
I like it. Makes sense, obviously. And it immediately shows the franchise is giving Gordon the benefit of the doubt after the debacle that was '10. I hope he takes advantage. We really need him to become a stud.

This is awesome. I've actually got that Bears picture as the screen saver on my phone, minus the Rodgers part, of course.

2010-11 MLB Offseason Catch-All
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 22, 2011 -> 03:35 PM) When you look at the AL East this year...it at least tentatively doesn't look as strong as previous years. The Yankees starting rotation is full of holes, their offense is going to get old one of these years (although they do have an incredible bullpen). The Rays bullpen is a gaping hole, they lost their best player, and they're counting on Ramirez and Damon to fill the hole. The Red Sox clearly got an awful lot better, but one can come up with reasons to doubt them if you try. If all their kids came out and hit, that could legitimately be a contender for at least the wild card. If their kids struggle somewhat, then of course they're rebuilding, but that's not a bad starting point. Whoa there. You're A LOT more optimistic than I am. I had been pimping the O's, along with lostfan, pretty hard in '09 and '10. And even then I never expected anything more than a .500 team. You're talking some 30 games or more improvement. They're going to need 3-5 pitchers, starters and bullpen, to really emerge for that to be remotely possible.

Mark Buehrle talks about the future after 2011
QUOTE (chisoxfan09 @ Jan 22, 2011 -> 02:42 PM) Mark reminds me of Jamie Moyer, not devastating stuff but a left hander whose arm will never fall off and who could coceivably pitch year after year into his 40´s. True. But it seems as if Moyer's arm is going to literally have to fall off before he calls it quits. Mark has been hinting at retirement quite a bit the last couple years. It could just be talk. But a tad on the annoying side.

2010-11 MLB Offseason Catch-All
QUOTE (chw42 @ Jan 22, 2011 -> 02:09 PM) Looks like Luke Scott will be playing LF. That lineup is gonna be pretty damn good. 1. Roberts 2B 2. Markakis RF 3. Lee 1B 4. Guerrero DH 5. Scott LF 6. Reynolds 3B 7. Jones CF 8. Wieters C 9. Hardy SS There's not a bad hitter in that lineup. Yeah, runs scored shouldn't be much of a problem. Especially if Wieters, Jones and Markakis live up to their potential. Runs prevented is going to be quite a different story. That rotation is straight ugly outside of Matuz, who I'm a big fan of. Their bullpen could be decent with Gregg, Gonzalez, Simon and Uhera, though.

2010-11 MLB Offseason Catch-All
Looks like the Vlad and the O's are close to a deal. http://twitter.com/JimBowdenXMFOX/status/28670852690092033 They've also had a pretty underrated off-season. Ultimately, their success will depend on many of their young guys. But they've supplemented that youth with quality veterans nicely.

2010-2011 NBA Thread
QUOTE (J.Reedfan8 @ Jan 21, 2011 -> 10:30 PM) I personally still don't see them beating the Celtics in a seven game series. I agree. Now if they can get an effective Haslem back by March as planned and Mike Miller stops doing his best Keith Bogans impersonation [he's actually been much worse than Bogans], then it's 50-50. But as of right now, they simply don't have enough around the Big 3 to beat Boston.

Jays trade Wells to Angels for Rivera/Napoli
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 22, 2011 -> 10:38 AM) If I was the Jays' GM and it took me Drabek to get rid of the bad years on Wells's contract, I'd probably do it. Not when Drabek was the centerpiece of the Halladay deal. At least I wouldn't do it.

Jays trade Wells to Angels for Rivera/Napoli
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 22, 2011 -> 10:28 AM) Really? Drabek isn't included? That's insanity. I guess after they got rid of Gary Matthews Jr.'s deal the Angels decided that they hadn't blown enough money on CF's this year. Nope. Never was. Not sure who had him in the deal. But I thought it was ridiculous the second I read it.
- Happy Birthday Balta!

Viciedo to the OF
There was really no other alternative save for trading him. Dayan is not a major league 3B. Never was.

Jays trade Wells to Angels for Rivera/Napoli
This is still unbelievable to me. Alex Adshsfhfhfdf deserves GM of the year right now for not only shedding that abomination of a contract but for getting two quality players, especially Napoli, that can help then in '11. They'll save about $80 million over the next 4 years. They have flexibility now that they couldn't dream of having before. They've got 7 of the first 80 picks in this June's draft. And as I've said many times, this is supposed to be one of the better drafts in some time. So they can be real aggressive there. They're already loaded pitching wise as it is. They could make a play for Pujols or Fielder if they choose [though getting a major FA to go to Canada won't be easy]. I guess this should give Cub fans all over the world hope that one day some special-ed GM will take the Soriano contract off their hands.

Jays trade Wells to Angels for Rivera/Napoli
Trading Drabek to shed Wells' salary is a fireable offense. You don't trade the best pitcher in the game in Halladay and get back a prized SP prospect to send him off a year later just to shed salary.

2010-2011 NBA Thread
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 21, 2011 -> 04:50 PM) If they can get everybody healthy...that's what will be the difference between them and the Jazz in the postseason. Wait a minute. I never compared the Heat and Jazz. I compared the Bulls to the Jazz. People can hate on the Heat all they want. But they've got two of the top 5 players in the game and another top 10 player in the game. They are special.

2010-2011 NBA Thread
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 21, 2011 -> 04:36 PM) Guess which team Basketball-Reference.com thinks has the best defense in the NBA (By far)? Not that surprising. When you have that type of length and athleticism and a defensive-minded coach it's to be expected. Although I will admit I didn't realize, according to BBR, of course, that they were that much better than everybody else.

White Sox Off-Season Catch All Thread
QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Jan 21, 2011 -> 04:37 PM) He also had a .939 ops in the 2nd half It was actually an .877 OPS the second half. And what does that tell you that he could have a pretty good second half of that magnitude yet end up with a sub .700 OPS overall? That means he was comically bad for over three months [304 PA's the first half vs 194 PA's the second half]. There's no way to sugarcoat that fact. Beckham needs to 'prove' it this year. If you want to be a homer AKA Scott Merkin or Ranger or SS2K5 then that's your right. But don't act as if those who are concerned and want to see Beckham prove himself are talking out their ass.
